That's fine, man. I really appreciate all the work you've been putting into this so far.

I'm not sure what I should do with this project. I definitely don't want to leave it in the dust, but if we're going to finish it, I guess we should at least figure out what to do with it?

I would like to keep helping with it, even if in just a small way (not that I ever consider that I was or could be the main driving force behind this). I have not had much of a chance to sit at a computer lately, let alone work. I want to try to carve out some time to get back to things. First I have to remember what I had on my plate, though. My head is mush and I can't remember everything.

It's cool, man. I had someone else who said they'd help work on it, but he vanished. I don't want to give up on this, but I can't find any help.

I really wish I knew of some SaGa Frontier fans who are also translators. I've never even played the game. I watched a friend of mine play the first one, but I don't remember if he ever finished it even. He bought the second, but never even started on it.

Also, he's not a translator, so ... :monster:

If I ever get at least half of the things I've been working on in the shadows for the past year and a half completed, I might take a swing at it. I'm sorry I can't promise more of a contribution on my part than the 10 bucks I chipped in (a paltry amount compared to a couple of you), but especially without having ever played the game, I don't think I'm going to be able to help. That's due both to lack of knowledge of the material, and an inevitable lack of interest if I run into a frustrating section to translate.

That's the thing; I don't want to make anyone to feel as if they have to tackle this beast alone. But isn't there a more efficient way to do it?

Instead of having Tres/Hito/etc translate everything themselves, one at a time, I was thinking it would be cool to have them in charge of translations, as something like, Site Head Translator, presiding over a team of translators to work on projects like this to make it faster, easier, and more efficient. They can use their knowledge of the language to do stuff like double checking work, organizing it for the main pages, and generally managing individual projects.

This requires we actually know people willing to translate Japanese, but I mean, it's the freaking Internet. Are people who are into RPGs and know Japanese that hard to find nowadays? Can't we pool our heads together and look?

Okay so, I've never played the game. I would really welcome the chance for more translation practice, though, so I'm willing to take a chunk of pages, with the same disclaimer hito gave - I don't know the canon.

...buuuut I do actually have a used copy sitting on my shelf here. So that could change.

Wow, thank you. Maybe things are looking up.

Tres, Hito, is the Site Head Translator idea something you guys want to try out?

I certainly think it's a good idea, but hito is more skilled than I am. I can get a job done, but I'd say he could get the same achieved in less than half the time.

If anybody should have such a position, it's him. I'll be happy to look over some stuff if a sub-translator asks for help, though. Like JayM, I'm always up for more practice; I just can't let myself get too far afield of my main projects. I've had one in progress for way over a year.

Like I said though, the position is less about translating yourself as it is managing other translators and managing the progress of projects/organizing/getting more translators if needed.

Well, let me think it over some. I'll let hito have first dibs. If he doesn't want to do it, then I may.

Thanks for the confidence at any rate. :monster:

Like Tres there are other projects I want to get finished, and I've got a lot of school work to get through, but in terms of checking and looking over things I don't mind helping with that.

Okay, so, I just started on page 70 ('cause that way I figured I wouldn't be stepping on any toes) and unless anyone has any objection I'll claim 70-90 for now. I like structure, so I'm just gonna post a page at a time as I finish them; this is all of p70.

I am so damn rusty it's not even funny so anyone who wants to crit this is welcome to do so. I tried to make it as non-Engrish-y as possible.

The World Atlas of Sandail

The day-to-day life of Sandail’s people

The things that give color to the world of “Saga Frontier 2” are the many small details in portrayal and production that are often overlooked. In this section, in order to breathe life into the world of Sandail, we will present these details, and explain the circumstances of each country, town, and character beyond what is in the game. Furthermore, the commentary in this section is from the time at the beginning of the game – in other words, the state of the world in the year 1220.

(Main Text, Top Section)

Sandail’s three big continents

The world of Sandail is divided into three main continents: the eastern continent, the northern continent, and the southern continent. Of these, the eastern continent and the southern continent have the highest population. Because it has a lot of big cities, the Merchmin region on the eastern continent has a particularly high concentration of people. On the other hand, the northern continent has developed more recently, and is home to several small villages.

The Economy of Sandail

Every country and city in Sandail has specialty products, which they transport to other countries and towns, and sell for profit. Let’s look at tools, as an example. Tools are more-or-less monopolized by Vogelang. The tools made here are transported to every country in the world. Although even faraway Thermes does not experience very high prices, the truth is, tariffs do accumulate. Since the storefronts are lined with tools that are cheaper, the chance of spotting a very strong tool is nonexistent. Essentially, this is because the strongest tools are expensive even in Vogelang, which specializes in them; the fees required to transport them to another country would make the final prices outrageous.

Now, if we take the price of tools and convert it to yen, how much would they cost? Though it’s never said in the game, the cost of a normal lunch would be 5 CR. Considering that in the real world, lunch is about 1000 yen, wouldn’t 1 CR be equal to 200 yen? But in Sandail, a person can make a living on 500 CR a month. So the normal currency value can be considered higher than the yen in modern day. And in Sandail the comparison to modern day is about 2, 3 times that. So the initial equipment, Cross Branch, is 100CR = 20000 yen, and in Sandail the value is doubled or tripled. As expected, we can’t really know whether something is cheap or expensive without asking Gustave or Wil, but you can imagine the exorbitant expense of paying the 10000CR toll to cross the bridge at Grand Valley. Incidentally, the toll would be about the price of a Quell, so you could also guess at their value.

(Picture Caption)

After picking up tariffs here and there, this is the final price. Happily, it’s not too expensive, but when you imagine the original price…

Additionally, some things to add to hito’s “quick guide to how shit is written in kana”:
ロードレスランド: Lordless Land
Vogelang
Thermes
Cross Branch
Grand Valley

Ugh every time I read this over it looks more awkward sorry everyone I tried. @_@

That's totally fine. As someone who's very familiar with the setting of the game its very true and everything is spelled correctly. Are you still interested in translating?

Crap, I'm impressed. Even knowing how good you are, the way you glided in and made it look like you were familiar with the terminology and such really says something.

It reads well, i.e. not Engrishy. I would have probably cast the one clause as "not just a game" rather than "not only a game," but that's a very small quibble, and there's not necessarily any difference in meaning. Glad we have Mog as someone who can tell us if any details don't ring true, as that's certainly more important than splitting hairs like this. :monster:

Good work.

I'd like to, yes, if that's all right. I'll get better with practice, I promise. :'(

It's already really great. I'm telling you, I've played the game a lot, and everything is true to form, even the spelling for some of the weird locations. I'd love for you to continue working on it. If you know anyone who'd like to help also by chance, they're free to pitch in as well. I'll continue to look it over as you go.

I actually worried over that sentence forever and still don't like it; your suggestion sounds better English-wise, so I'll edit that, danke~

Thanks for the kind words, both of you. :) I have a few friends who studied Japanese in college; I'll see if any of them would be comfortable with something like this - if nothing else, getting people to transcribe the Japanese text would make the whole thing go much faster. I just don't know kanji like I used to and having to look them up by radical takes forever. @_@

But yeah frankly I'm interested in staying on this project until somebody kicks me off, so, er, if you guys are good with my translatin' I'll have another page for you probably next week-ish!

Hey, folks who know the canon, wondering if you could help out with something!

I'm working on page 71 and there's several rivers in the picture. A search of the Saga wiki only brings up the Anath River - I know which one that is, but there are a bunch more discussed on the page and shown in the picture. Are there any other rivers mentioned by name in the game? If not I'll just romanize the kana as-is.

Thanks in advance!

As far as the script mentions, the Anath River is the only named river in the game. Go ahead and interpret the rest as you see fit.
