A quick wiki trip tells me it's an adaptation of one of Junji Ito's works, and that guy is a master artist of creepy shit.

gyo is the only anime that has been made of the ito's work, but he does have a lot of live-action adaptations (lots of films based on his 'tomie' series).
i can't think of a lot of scary anime offhand, which is weird because i watch a lot of japanese horror and read horror manga
