Scary Anime?

Looking for some scary anime stuff. Like properly scary and/or creepy not sort of "vampires/ghosts go to high school and have romantic misunderstandings" or anything. Can be a series or a film, I'm not fussy. Not squicked by violence or gore or sex - but I don't want any hentai.

Any ideas?

The only anime that has ever given me that same feeling horror films have is Higurashi (although it isn't scary horror throughout).

Berserk turns into a super horrifying anime (old and new version). It's actually one of the only animes that have ever gotten me feeling bad in my stomach--not nauseous, but just plain bad. But it's really good. :monster:

Um that's all I got for now. I usually don't watch creepy stuff.

I've heard Tokyo Ghoul is pretty disturbing. I haven't seen it, but based on how people talk about it, it's because of some messed up kills and whatnot. Might wanna check it out.

Have they done an anime of Uzumaki?

Another's not bad. More 'tense' type scary than gore or monster based.

Ah, you've seen Vampire Knight.

You've probably seen it before, but the only one I know is Hellsing (Ultimate). It's pure gore porn though, with a bit of nightmarish horror (EYES! EYES EVERYWHERE!11one) sprinkled about. But yeah, it's ten episodes of high quality (if a bit TL;DR here and there) action. And nazis.

It's part of a small collection of anime shorts called "Memories" but if you haven't ever watched it alone in the dark, you need to watch Magnetic Rose. Also, I'm currently watching Parasyte - the maxim which would probably qualify as a little more gory but with some horror to it - especially body horror.

It isn't probably the scariest but Jikogu Shoujo is one of my favourite animes. It's been a while since I've seen it but what I remember it is pretty creepy but it's also quite sad.

Have you seen Kakurenbo? It's more atmospheric than scary, but it's a pretty cool anime short film.

I would recommend Tokyo Ghoul also. But like Hellsing it's less "scary" and more filled with dark themes and gory, it's really good.

My first instinct is to nominate Elfen Lied... While not as scary it does have some serious wtf moments for the viewer and is a total gore fest. It plays with your emotion and mKes you question the characters but it's not like... Traditional scary, I guess. However, Everyone knows of it so it needs no introduction.

But then my true nomination comes for Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. It's a 3 eps OVA about a murdered little girl whose trapped in a Venetian glass, and a young man who works at the antique store who sees her becomes obsessed with her. He starts talking to her and to prove his love to her, she tests him physically and mentally by mind fucking him.

Actually kinda legit scary.

It isn't going to have jump scares and isn't all that creepy but Ghost Hunt is pretty fun.

IIRC it has about 20ish episodes and each "hunt" takes about 2 episodes minimum to complete. Each hunt is basically a mini mystery movie that deals with the paranormal. Some episodes actually did a really good job of setting up the atmosphere of uneasiness.

The different characters are fairly likable though it does fall in the "female protagonist likes the cool yet flawed male lead" trope. Over all I actually really liked it even though it sort of ends setting up a following season that never got made :(

Again though it's not really going to spook you. It's more a paranormal mystery anime more than a scary one.

Also, Blood: The Last Vampire was so good.

Paranoia Agent is a good, old, psychological thriller. Also made by the late visionary genius that was Satoshi Kon.

Also, "Gyo" seems like a pretty traditional-type horror movie. Like a slightly more serious Sharknado? :awesome:

A quick wiki trip tells me it's an adaptation of one of Junji Ito's works, and that guy is a master artist of creepy shit.

Having recently read that manga (at Guillermo Del Toro's suggestion), I can absolutely say that it qualifies, and the anime looks just as creepy as fuck.

If you like horror stuff, Junji Ito's mangas are a must. Shame they're mostly not adapted to anime...

He was involved with Silent Hills, too... so yeah.

oh god they made an anime of gyo

gyo is the only anime that has been made of the ito's work, but he does have a lot of live-action adaptations (lots of films based on his 'tomie' series).

i can't think of a lot of scary anime offhand, which is weird because i watch a lot of japanese horror and read horror manga :sadpanda: boogiepop phantom? shiki? (i didn't finish watching this one and i have the first novel waiting to be read) narutaru? (i don't know if that's horror or more just creepy/disturbing) so i looked online for some recommendations:

- another
- ayakashi
- ghost stories
- demon prince enma
- requiem for the damned
- ghost hunt
- corpse party - tortured souls
- hell girl
- ghost hound
- dusk maiden of amnesia
- hakaba kitarou
- mononoke
- yamishibai - japanese ghost stories
- higuraku ga naku koro ni

Mononoke is really good (dat Medicine Seller).

Also, I'm not sure if Cat Soup is technically horror, but I found it really, really unsettling.

Mononoke (and the last story of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales which Mononoke spins-off from) is one of my all-time favourite anime series.
