Okay, I take issue with statements to the effect of "Genesis is a bad character, he has no personality."
It's just...not true. No, he didn't have a million thought-out speeches. Yes, the LOVELESS quotes got annoying after a while.
But you learned a considerable deal about Genesis: He joined SOLDIER because he looked up to Sephiroth, then as he got better, he grew a competative streak, but he always viewed them as friends. When the degredation started, he got really pissy to the point where he wanted to make people suffer like he did. His all-consuming goal was desperation to restore his body. He was bitter towards Shinra, but the attacks were probably more Hollander's idea.
LOVELESS established him as basically a literary critic. You remember in English class when your teacher asked you what the theme of the novel was? That's what Genesis was doing. He was identifying the Gift of the Goddess & attributing a personal meaning to it: Life.
And, since LOVELESS is "an ancient epic," he's probably right in doing so, too.
LOVELESS may also have been a form of escapism for him.
