Here's some more info from the article:

There's 7 animals to choose from, each with their own powers

Bear — Blows away enemies with a homing attack
Bird — Flies high with double jump abilities
Cat — Keeps one ring after being hit
Dog — Restarts with five rings after the player dies
Hedgehog — Collects rings when getting damaged
Rabbit — Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
Wolf — Automatically draws in rings when near them

Not sure about this one:
"Hedgehog — Collects rings when getting damaged"

so... instead of taking damage he collects rings? ... well I'm sure we'll see more when it comes out. but overall this seems like a good idea... I already think I'm going to make a wolf or maybe a purple hedgehog... or maybe I'll go ahead and make Bubsy anyway :monster:


This will be fun and I'm already wondering how this will effect speed runs of the game "The X character moves the fastest with Y weapon!"... and such

Some brand new Sonic 2 development stuff has just come to light.

So Hirokazu Yasuhara is speaking right now at Digital Dragons in Poland, and there he is revealing a whole bunch of development stuff about Sonic games. @necrosofty is posting stuff from it on Twitter.

Unused overworld maps from Sonic 2, showing unused zone names:

Sand Shower Zone
Ocean Wind Zone
Blue Lake Zone
Rock World Zone
Tropical Plant Zone
Olympus

Read the thread on Retro, it shows a map of West side island during the different time zones, before time travel was dropped.

There were planned to be different time lines:
Present
Medieval
Present, in ruins
Ancient time

Going by the pictures, Emerald Hill (referred to as Green Hill still), was the present version, it's future was Hill Top, Dust Hill was it's Ancient version, and Chemical Plant was it's ruined version.

This is all happening right now, so follow the thread I linked to be kept up to date.

The biggest thing that's come to light is that the desert stage we've been calling Dust Hill wasn't actually Dust Hill...but Sand Shower. The proof of this came from old design documents and interviews we've had since 2001, where it states that the Desert stage's past was Rock World. Add that with the maps we have, and that makes the stage we called Dust Hill actually Sand Shower. Dust Hill is something else entirely.

The time line I posted before was incorrect, it's actually:

Green Hill - Present
Chemical Plant - future
Hill Top - past
Dust Hill - ruins

Dust Hill as a ruined Green Hill makes sense. Dust doesn't mean sand, but ashes. So badly destroyed there's nothing left, only "dust".

Love love LOVE the Sonic CD-esque animation. Also here's your confirmed release date. Also that's neat editing where it switches the playable character at identical parts of the level. Also I like how Mania is listed immediately after S&K :P Also I'm super excited to play it.

Was shown after the "Ancient Time" world map, Yasuhara says "and some big tsunamis come in and everything gone" in the talk.

If they managed to complete all these zones and the time travel story, would they even be able to fit all of it on the cartridge :p.
