Soulcalibur V

[X-SOLDIER]

So, I've been looking at some of the new Soulcalibur stuff, and up until now, I hadn't really decided if I'd check it out or not. I played 2 & 3, but never got 4. So far what I've seen of 5 has me intrigued. It's taking place 17 years later, which gives room for some interesting character changes. I'm especially pleased with Nightmare's design (since he's the character I like best), and I think it's his best look yet, and I'm glad that it's returned to a closer version of how he looked in his SC2 incarnation.

Overall though, it was this latest feature video that sold me.
I've always loved character creation stuff, but this one seem absolutely AWESOME.

Also, those costume designs in the link look very bleh. Their SCIV counterparts looked way better.

(although his Tekken costumes have always been better still)

She's Xianghua's daughter, since SCV takes place 17 years after SCIV.

According to the wiki, it's because he's been rejuvinated from his undead state.

Words cannot express my excitement for this game. While Final Fantasy may be the series that has consumed the greatest amount of my time on the Internet, the Soul series has probably eaten just as many gameplay hours as FF, and could possibly be called my first love. I played "Soul Edge" before FFVII brought me into the RPG fold.

I'm loving that these trailers seem to suggest a single, cohesive storyline for SCV. I've always loved the plot and character backgrounds to this series, and felt that it had a lot of untapped potential as a more story-centered affair. It warms my heart greatly to see that my wish may at least be fulfilled -- and with something other than that poorly written, continuity clusterfuck SC Legends.

I'll be getting the Collector's Edition version of this. January 31st cannot come soon enough.

Kilik has always been my main character for Soul Calibur dating right back to SC2. These images show that he looks to be some kind of IMPORTANT character. Even if not, his new design is awesome. I always loved the story between Him, Xianghua and Maxi.

I'm glad to see Mitsurugi still rockin' the beard. Dude never looked quite right clean shaven to me.

Also gotta agree with Joe; Kilik, Xianghua and Maxi had an excellent story. I imagine if the one new girl is Xianghua's daughter we may see Kilik going all papa-wolf style tranquil fury in his story.

I'm certainly lookin' into picking this up when it comes out, now that I've stabilized a bit financially. Is SCIV a significant story development? I never picked it up, and I'm wondering if I should or if I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Otherwise, I don't really think so but I didn't get to play it much so I could be wrong.

I don't know what to make of this game. Early trailers were underwhelming and some of the new character designs leave a lot to be desired. Also, what's the point of a time-shift if none of the characters have visually aged? For example, Mitsurugi doesn't look 17 years older at all. He just looks unkempt. As for Ivy, her puppies should be sagging around her waist by now.

Still, if the gameplay's solid, they put effort into the story modes, aaaaand they've improved the character creation, then I could pick it up.

Ivy has her whole thing with tainted blood and such as an excuse to not be sagging and wrinkled at least (though considering this is Soul Edge she's bound to you'd think it'd be the other way around). No excuse for Mitsurugi of course, they could at least have given him some salt and pepper in his hair/beard.

Here's to hoping that this 9/10 review is a good representation of the game, because I'm rather looking forward to it, and this seems to outline what I've been wanting.

Before anyone else picks this up - don't get it if you're looking for Single Player Content. The main story takes... 2-3 hours focusing on the new characters, with a couple veterans. It's a pretty interesting story, but the presentation is.... rather sub par, aside from the gorgeous (but rather limited) cut scenes.

Also - No individual endings in Arcade Mode, so all of the veterans that don't show up in the story... don't really have anything to explain what's up with them. :\

I tend to agree with Joystiq's review that it's both the best & worst Soul Calibur game.
