It still amazes me that he was first picked as a leg spinner. His late blossoming as a batsman might explain his rather unorthodox style. It seems to work pretty well for him though.
OK, that's an understatement. He's unbelievably good. Before this series I thought there was a small, elite group of batsmen on more or less the same level – Smith, Joe Root, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson. But Root has had a mediocre series and nobody in the world can touch Smith right now.
It's hard to imagine Australia losing a series, or at least a home series, with the kind of form he's in. Nobody can get him out! Two of his four dismissals in this series have been dragging on, which is unlucky for him (lucky for England), yet he's still averaging 151.00 for the series. He's a freak all right.
