Suggestion: A Break From Alt-Names

So many active people right now are people that hid in the wings before the people who left (whom I love but they could be loud and overbearing)

=/

Now that we're what's left, I find myself scanning through everyone's AKA fields all the time trying to find a name I recognize. I have a pretty shitty memory as it is, and don't immediately recognize everyone. Also, there are only one or two people left from every "theme" game that we used to play, so it looks messy imo.

The flavour of TLS has changed a lot in the last couple of weeks. It might be nice to re-establish who we are before we start wearing masks again.

I really don't understand what's so hard about reading the aka fields. It's just not difficult to tell who people are. Especially now that people have left it's easier in my opinion. I've noticed that people have a certain typing style and there's at least one thing in their signatures that always remains the same. How hard is it to glance at their aka field? I have no idea why this site is so nit picky about something so simple.

I think it's not just about the username, personally, but about the entire theme; I for one cba to read the username and AKA fields every time, I just glance at the theme (avatar / signature, the 'overall look' of a post) to try and determine who poasted it. You know, like how you recognize people based on general things like hair color instead of the details.

And I just realised two people used "Daenerys Targaryen" as username. NOW WHAT?!

I know it's not at the same time, but imagine! It can be confusing. Haha.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Tiff (Celes) used "Demona" for a while, which is now Sizheng's username.

The knowing who people are isn't a problem for me anymore, but I have advocated tighter rules on changing names. Partly because this forum is really lax for it, and for people who aren't here all the time/ are new it's a real problem. But I'm really 50/50 on this now, I'd support it either way it goes.

xoxo I can't believe you remembered that!!

That being said, keep in mind I don't do a lot of user names because I'm really bad of making up user names, and if I was to be #485039 instead of a name, I would prefer it :P Also, keeping one nick is 1337 and h4xx0r etc.

I've read quotes of the likes of if you cared about me you would know who I am in regards to AKA's. I can see what anyone who would say that is trying to say. But - people might not care because they just have no idea who you are. Then you might say no not anyone who matters but they could be anyone who matters if they got to know you. It takes time mapping 20-30 regulars if you spend 30 minutes in here per day. I was able to keep track of most of the people here after some time, but that was because 1) I spent a lot of time in here, and 2) I kept notes of the names with some key details to keep track of everyone.

So yes, you can still keep track of people because of name changes, but it does make it harder to know who's who. I'm down to encouraging people to keeping one user name - not in any way restricting user names, but encouraging.

all the hot canadians are basically the same person anyway

Right this is totally and utterly wrong but when I read this my first thought was 'Bryan Adams?' :O

I don't really mind, I just about have the hang of the names thing as long as the aka fields stay updated. Plus I've figured out who is who like Tony, Rishi, Kat etc but I will say thats only after a looooong time and I can totally see why that would be confusing for people. For ages I thought 'Tiff' was in reference to 'Tifabelle' :aah:

Dunno if people would want to include real names in the aka though, I'm sure a while back Dacon said he hated being called Brent on the forums?

If people put time and effort into trying to identify people, the aka fields are absolutely useful--to a point. Someone mentioned Rishi and Tony's names being used and yeah, that's first names so I get it. Yop I was able to identify because of the aka fields. But with the name changes, it's difficult to keep track of people when you're new to the forums. It was something that intimidated me when I first joined. I mean, hey, if you want it badly enough then you'll work for it, sure, but I'm sure people would appreciate knowing that this is not going to be enforced, but that it's in the minds of people.

Also, having consistent names really helped me when sifting through old posts to immediately identify who and what, and what sort of personality they have, etc. When discussing TLS IRL with Ite, I often refer to various members and there's usual a brief blank while we try and figure out if we're talking about the same person.

In short, I think it's a good idea just to be aware that new members can be intimidated/feel lost when not only are you going into a forum where it appears everyone knows one another, but people keep changing their names and faces.

Sorry if this isn't so organised, but yeah.

i once called omega by his real name and it was awkward for all concerned (i didn't realise it was his real name at first)

some people like rishi and chelsea have used my real name here but i would feel weird about having that on an aka field because it's not the same as usernames

and where's my special username colour that was my free pass to have whatever name i wanted

I know your name, hito
I ALSO KNOW YOUR LAST NAME
but I promise I'm a lady :3

Also I don't know Omega's real name now I am sadface :(

And if people insist on calling me 'old sexy tart' I promise I will put it in my AKA.

In all honesty, it's been less and less of a real problem for me, lately. But I admit that part of the community (I think it's some of those who left?) tended to change their names more, and made it extremely confusing for me.

I'd like to think I know pretty much everyone in here. But there were some people that I was like "huh?" when I saw them posting.

Well I also think the more you post/read, the less of a problem it becomes due to learning everyone's general writing style.

The forum is lax on it because it is the People's will, :monster:. If the People want everyone to be called according to one of the Great Old Ones, then so it shall be.

Remember when everyone changed their name to Raiden to confuse Username?

And then Username changed his name to Raiden too?

Oh god. Memories.

RIP TLS fun ;_;

I always list all my usernames, keep the same font colour, and use a variant of the same signature to enable people to keep track of who I am. I also don't think I've changed my location, sex field, or user title in over a year. (It probably doesn't hurt that I'm one of the oldest people here either). But given that most people don't do those things, I can understand why people have difficulty keeping track of who people are.

If the community thinks it's appropriate I wouldn't have anything against restricting name changes to a longer frequency of time. I can also look into coding a "display username" thing, although that would probably only show up on the postbit. The other problem is that it would probably be slightly difficult to code something that would prevent multiple people from taking the same display username. So on second thought Yop or Kat should probably do that, but it's a good idea.

You and I joined around the same time, and I remember thinking you were a pretty cool cat (and I looked up to you as far as how active you were), so that name has always stuck with me when I think of you. I do "know" you more readily as Fangu, but I think I'll always remember your first name :)

I am Thor. I'm not changing shit.

Also, that display name thing looks wack and it would be severely retarded. I signed up on TLS as Rusty which I changed like three days later to Cookie Monster, which NO ONE remembers. It would probably just confuse more people. And, if the display thing is ever put in place, it should be under the avatar. Looks silly up there. Personally I find an aka field with 20 names in it rather confusing. It should just be one or two names. The names that people actually know you as. Key word there is know, if you didn't see it the first time. It's silly having a name in the aka field that you only used for a week. :monster:

This is what I said more than once during the multiple bouts of aka field drama over a year ago. I also mentioned that keeping the same font color, signature, et al, should be an aid, but that was ignored, too. Suddenly, it's a great idea.

...I'm going to get my name changed to Galileo now. :oscar:
