The Cult of Kefka

Dawnbreaker

~The Other Side of Fear~
I would definitely say that Kefka is iconic and one of my favorite scenes is the poisoning of Doma. Although other scenes are more dramatic and actually better, Kefka's whole speech during this time is really disturbing--which is why I love it. There is an insanity that's crying to be completely unleashed and I think this is one of the pivotal moments where it shines.

He's a crazy little fucker, and that's why he's so special. Because he's unredeemably, unquestionably evil.

Also, why are it spelled with a C? Everyone's always used K etc, whilst they were correct about Aeris/th all the tym :monster:.

I think that the original japanese name was meant to be with "C", but since, in japanese, his name is spelled "Kefuka" instead of "Sefuca", his name was translated to the west as "Kefka".

The same deal happened with Aerith's name. the "th" in japanese is spelled as "su" as in "Aerisu". Thus, it was originally translated to the west as "Aeris".

Also, I’ve been reading some impressions of people who played the Dissidia Demo and it seems Kefka had many improvements over the Japanese version. Here’s what I could gather up until now:

-Kefka's Here and There Thundaga is no longer random, it is much more concentrated than before.

-Variety Firaga seems to have gotten an animation change.

-Back and Forth Firaga's properties have changed. It moves much faster and its tracking has been improved quite a bit. It can be guarded but it staggers the opponent.

-Hyperdrive can now track opponents into the air.

-Apparently, Kefka’s Ultima is now unblockable (though one person stated that he was able to block it) and if you try to dash through it, you get stopped by the little ball no matter what.

Btw, Kefka's "title" went from Trick Star (japanese version) to Mad Mage (western version).

Yes. The only grudge i have with him, design-wise, is his pointy ears and exagerated lipstick.

The lipstick in the Amano artwork from wich Dissidia Kefka's was based of was much more subtle.

Other than that, his fiery personality remained intact, wich is a good thing. :monster:

As for his voice, i prefer the japanese VA. It has...more variety in terms of voice tones and such.

In terms of gameplay, from what I've read, he doesn't seem to be a very good character, but i'll reserve my judgement until I play with his character.

But in terms of the character itself, yes, Kefka was very good and did justice to his original self in FFVI. And his EX-Mode is beyond epic! :monster:

Lol!

By the way, here's Kefka's character profile in Dissidia's Museum:

A mage who finds no greater joy than in destruction

In the original game, he was the right hand of Emperor Gestahl.

A proven military strategist, he favored effective, if inhumane, methods that caused countless casualties. His pushy methods left him disliked by anyone unlucky enough to work under him.

Infusions of Magitek power have caused him to lose his grip on sanity. Thirty-five years old, he is known for his high, lingering laugh

Battlewise, I think Kefka is a very fun character to play with.

Some people say that, in terms of gameplay, Kefka is not a very good character, but that’s not my opinion at all. When properly used, Kefka becomes an incredible Brave-sapping machine.

The only thing I can point out as negative about Kefka is the fact that most of his Brave attacks can be deflected and directed towards Kefka, which kinda hurts sometimes.

My basic strategy is to use Kefka in a way to overwhelm the opponent by surrounding it with magic spells. Usually, I prefer to use him as an aerial and long-range fighter.

In a normal fight, the strategy I generally use to break my opponent’s Brave is to unleash several Waggle-Wobbly Firagas towards the opponent and when they start to hit, unleash a Scatterspray Blizzaga followed by an Extra-Crispy Firaga for maximum damage.

Usually, I’m able to break an opponent’s brave if not during the first wave of attacks, then during the chase sequence that follows if Extra Crispy Firaga connects. And depending on the opponent’s level and equipment, I might be able to beat it with an HP attack before the chase sequence ends. If not, then a well-timed Havoc Wing might do the trick.

One thing I do sometimes for lulz is (when I’m in the verge of a one hit victory) to keep a certain distance of my opponent and start to charge Forsaken. The CPU then places its character in front of Kefka, moving one side to another, like if it doesn’t know what to do. When it finally decides to start either a Brave or HP attack, I release the £ button and BOOM – the final hit. Due to a full-charged Forsaken’s speed and homing capabilities, the opponent won’t be able to dodge the attack, the same way that it can’t land an attack before getting hit. It’s quite fun to do this, imo.

As for Kefka’s EX-mode, I use it as soon as my EX-gauge is full and I might go immediately for an EX-Burst if my opponent has less than 1000 BRV, that a “Light of Judgement” will break anyway. If its Brave is between 1000 and 2500 BRV or more, I usually use Waggle-Wobbly Firaga until I break my opponent’s Brave. Due to Kefka’s enormous boost in attack power while in EX-Mode and due to the fact that W-W Firaga is unleashed in pairs, this will take only a few seconds.

After this, and while my opponent is still being hit by the several W-W Firagas around, I use Trine to give the final blow and unleash Kefka’s Ex-Burst, hitting for an additional 2000-2500 HP. Titillating, indeed.

So, how about you guys? How did you equip “your” Kefka? And what strategies do you use? Let us compare our views and fighting stiles on our favourite God of Magic.

Now for some discussion...

What did you think of Kefka's character in the Dissidia games?

I, for one, think that they were able to chatch Kefka's essence in FFVI perfectly.

He's one of the most amusing characters (if not the most amusing), his reactions are quite fun, but at the same time, his reactions are frightening and intimidating, much like Kefka was originally in FFVI. I love the active role he had in some of the events in Dissidia Duodecim, specially his interactions with Kuja.

As for his voice, I think that both VA's (Japanese & English) were quite good, though i liked the exotic sound of his japanese VA a bit more.

The only grudge I have against character is design-wise, mainly his exagerated lipstick and pointy ears.

He didn't had those ears in the
Kefka05.jpg
, and the lipstick was a bit more subtle. But other than that, his uniform is awesome and very beffiting of Kefka's madness.

Overall, i think that Kefka was one of the few characters who did most justice to his original self in FFVI.

And what about you guys? What did you think of Kefka in the Dissidia games?
