FINALLY, after one month in cinemas around the world, Greece got the movie here too.
Went yesterday and loved it. I liked Bane as a villain, because he was of the smart kind: take your time, plan ahead, be patient and DON'T be cocky. The twist with
Talia
at the end... I had been spoiled for the whole movie, but, judging from the reactions of my friends, it was an unexpected twist. Only they were complaining about the whole
"Bane loves Talia" thing, because "Oh, COME ON! Just when we learned that he was a cutie that helped a little innocent kid, we got him as a pedo????" which made me laugh, because I don't think he saw her like that when she was a kid. XD
I liked Catwoman a lot. I recognised a lot of mannerisms from the comics, even if I have read little (not big on the Batman comics, I'm afraid), but it was there. She was a character on her own right, even from the other incarnations/versions of the role, regardless of medium (movies, series, comics, cartoons). I enjoyed seeing her and the Batman next to each other.
One thing that bothered me: Jonathan Blake.
OK, I can see why make him the moral compass, he IS the next Batman after all
, but boy, was he an IDIOT. He annoyed me more than anything else, regardless of how proactive he was. Grrr...
The plot didn't confuse me, I could follow the story just fine. The screen was an explosion of good cinematography and the combat scenes were enjoyable. I didn't regard them as lackluster, more like "yeah, I could see this fight taking place in front of me". It was a ice change from the acrobatics of the superhero movies I've seen lately.
And yes, I do think that this was better than The Dark Knight, simply because I found it filled with more story and more twists. Besides, I always believed that what made TDK such a memorable film was more Ledger's acting than anything else.
^on Bane/Talia: I didn't take the "because he loved me" line as romantic or sexual at all, and I don't think it was intended that way *shrugs*
anyways I had to watch this a second time because my sister wanted to go, and I just wanted to bring up this point:
So like, is Christopher Nolan whitewashing what would otherwise be coloured characters (Bane - South American, Talia - Chinese/Arabic) an example of undercutting something that would otherwise be horribly racist (considering the political spectrum the film falls under as well as the fact that they are the two primary antagonists) or is it just like
I didn't have an issue with Marion since she's french but I'm still trying to decide on Bane as well.
Another thing I'm a big fan of Batman/Catwoman but in this movie it wasn't working at all, the storyline was bad and Christian and Anne didn't really have that much chemistry together.

Neither's been consistently portrayed as being anything other than white in the comics and animated stuff, and given Ra's is Qui-Gon, well, yeah. So, it's whitewashing, but it's also just sort of director favorites. I'd blame nepotism, first.
As for whether it's racist to 'whitewash' a villian when it is typical that villians are typically cast as nonwhites, I really don't know. Especially given that for a number of folks, Arabian = evil in their heads as a rule.

Except for the one time he was literally Albino after he was resurrected and it was stated at one point that he was born to a small tribe in Arabia if I remember correctly.

Again, not claiming he or Talia are supposed to be white- though I realize I should have said 'drawn' not 'portrayed,' that one is my bad- just that the artists fuck up and make them look like that.
Maybe I'm wrong about how often they are whitewashed, but it does happen.
