It gets even better. The show is one of the best mindfucks in the history of television. Possibly the best, but I’m not well versed enough in the history of television to speculate (for instance, I haven’t seen The Prisoner).

I'd say that given that three of the four presidents that preceded Obama skipped Arlington at least once, it is extremely trivial and meaningless. Especially since Obama still went to a military cemetery.

Finding a local military cemetery makes it look like he can't be bothered to interrupt his vacation. I realize that those who haven't worn the uniform are foreign to the concept of morale, but again, the gesture is not lost on people who are expected to put themselves in harms way. You are correct about GWB, he did miss a year and visited Normandy instead. Making the trip back home would have been the proper thing to do.

He works sixteen hours a day in one of the most stressful jobs on the planet and has been the subject of god knows how many death threats for being the first black president. Risking one's life on the battlefield isn't the only way to risk one's life for one's country.

A lot of people in the service also seem to think that having gays openly serving in the military is going to destroy morale so forgive me if the opinions of "many in the service" aren't a huge concern to me. When someone who's been under that much stress goes out of his way to commemorate an occasion, you don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
