TLS Movie Night

I've been thinking.

One night, ages and ages ago, a small group of us watched two episodes of The Boondocks while chatting about it on MSN. We agreed that it was fun, and that we should do it again.

Later on, this was brought up for watching movies, and thus 'FCF Movie Night' was born. However, because FCF is full to brimming with lazy cunts, nothing ever came of it, and the idea died unfulfilled.

Since then, I've had a shitload of fun watching various TV shows (Supernatural, Lost, House, etc) and movies with my girlfriend and other people online. And so I put forth the concept of a TLS Movie Night, for your approval.

Basically, people get together, either in one big group, or a number of smaller groups, and watch thus and such movie, and discuss/review it, and these can be posted not only in a dedicated thread, but on the main site itself (which would generate activity, albeit non FF-related activity). It also brings more life to the forums, which have gotten boring and stagnant lately, since people only post in one of two areas.

The movies can be selected in said thread here on TLS, and people can make suggestions/vote on what they want to see next, and this can take place every two to four days, so that it creates a constant flow of activity and encourages both the exchange of ideas, as well as the broadening of horizons (by seeing movies you've never seen/would necessarily consider).

I know this was mentioned in passing a few days ago in an MSN chat, so Imma bringin' it up. Thoughts?

This is why I think smaller groups is best. Like, if the movie was scheduled for a Tuesday, they could be done in 3-4 hour showings, so that everyone who wanted to participate could just show up around whatever time and there would always be people available.

That way the time zone thing isn't an issue.

Probably MSN, since skype likes to mess with listening volumes for stuff, and there's feedback into the microphones, as well. But that's really up to the people watching at the time. =P

Also, you may not like House, but Supernatural actually seems like something you'd like. I didn't think I'd like it either. Then again...I've only seen the first episode.

I think it'd be best if the showings were separated into groups - like some people have already mentioned, not everyone here lives in the same time zone.

Would this just be on MSN or Skype?

I'd prefer it being held over at TLS, honestly. Because in Skype there would just be too many people interrupting each other; MSN borks and because you type faster in a chat convo., it'd move much faster than a thread. Plus, TLS needs the activity.

I think the discussion during the movie would be better over MSN or skype or something like that, but talking about it after the fact, when people have seen it, would ABSOLUTELY be best here on TLS.

The problem with having it on something like Skype or MSN is that when there's so many people, it becomes difficult to keep up with all the messages. Then again, most of the fun of this idea comes from the livechat aspect, so keeping it in forum may not pan out.

It's just that it's impossible for there to be a coherent chat or anything about it on TLS. Once the movie is over, people share what they think about it, favorite parts, what they didn't like, etc, on TLS, in a dedicated thread.

Plus, yes, livechat is more fun, at least for DURING the movie. =P

The main problem I have with Skype is that not everyone owns a microphone, and the thought of everyone talking at the same time would be confusing. As for MSN, it'd be difficult to keep up with everyone. I don't see any complications if we were to do it at TLS, on the other hand.

That's why you don't use the microphone on Skype - use the text chat thing instead. =P

And having a discussion about a movie while it's happening on TLS would be like the original incarnation of the Chit Chat thread, where there would be a new post in the thread every thirty second or less, which people always said was confusing and impossibly difficult to keep up with.

But it's just a general suggestion based on what I've done in the past (never really had any issues with the MSN chat, but your mileage may vary, ofc) - people can watch in whatever way they want; TLS is just the meeting point.

I'm just going to lay down the same proposed ground rules that I proposed to Kimble on MSN that might make this work realistically.

We watch a different movie every week, in our own time. Preferably something different, this shouldn't just be about showing your favourite movie off to your mates, but an oppurtunity to watch things you might not have considered watching before:

After the movie, come post your thoughts on it here. It'll encourage some discussion and debate and review.

Whilst it would be more fun to watch it all together on Skype or MSN it is ultimately impractical and unwieldy, but that shouldn't stop small groups from doing it if they wish. The more the merrier imo. But ultimately it should be like book club or something, you have a week to finish the movie, then we meet back here and discuss

TBH, I find the discussions and reviews that would happen AFTER we see the movie to be much more interesting and worthwhile than a new 'OMG DID U SEE THAT' post every 30 seconds because we decided to watch the movie at the same time.

...but I'm with Kerr on like everything he said. Typing and checking the msn or skype thing every 10 seconds to see if someone posted something worth while takes away from a movie and is bad as that one guy who keeps pointing out the obvious and asking questions during it, which I'm sure one person is gonna do. I think it would be better if we all watched a movie then on like Saturday or whatever day we want discuss it here, msn, or skype. It seems a lot more organized and less spammy.

I don't think the difference in time zone has to be a big issue. 9am here is evening for many of you in the US, see what I mean? And MSN has worked best for me in the past with these things. Max of 7-8 people and it works really well.

Talking of ACC, what happened to the commentary that was being organised? Just curious.

Oh wow, havent been here in a good while (was a bit busy with stuff preparing for eventual moving out) but, I'm back nao and I also think this is a great idea! I love watching movies so I'd love to partake in this ! Depends on the movies tho really XD.
