Session 1 report

Overview

Sandpoint's Swallowtail Festival began with fun and games, but took a morbid turn. Goblins threatened to overrun the city, and it fell to our brave adventurers to protect it. After clearing the Cathedral square of monsters, they came to the aid of Aldern Foxglove, a Magnimarian nobleman, but were unable to save the life of his beloved dog. Father Zantus aided them with his healing magic and Ameiko Kaijitsu offered them free room and board at her tavern, the Rusty Dragon, in gratitude.

Loffrey (Keveh Kins), Silver (Kuroto), Calideon (Joe) and Romsa (Monterosa) took part in the early session, while Sydney (Warrior of Light), Milton (WoL's husband), Drea (AvecAloes) and Fenrion (ForceStealer) made up the late session.

Since there were two game sessions, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to remember all the memorable moments, so please help me fill in the gaps!

The Games

There were numerous games and contests around Sandpoint for the PCs to take part in. Loffrey impressed with his Oud in the musical talent show, while Milton got the wrong idea and decided to perform some magic tricks instead of a song, leaving the crowd a little confused. Later, Sydney and Fenrion duked it out in a tug-of-war, but both of them rolled so poorly that they only managed to fall over.

The Food

Sydney's party seemed to be on a mission to get as many different kinds of food on her as possible. Drea (I think) rolled poorly on a Shortbow attack, hitting a nearby display of oranges, sending juice and pulp all over Sydney. When he was being grappled by a goblin later on, Milton thought it would be a good idea to throw a coconut pie at the goblin, but he only managed to hit her instead. With friends like these...

The Inevitable

Level 1 spellcasters really are squishy, as Loffrey, Drea and Milton all demonstrated. The three of them were knocked out by run-of-the-mill goblin warriors. Silver must have had a sense of déjà vu, as she found herself casting Stabilise on Loffrey for the second consecutive session. Drea's companions seemed to ignore her for a round, before Milton (I think) came to perform first aid on her. After regaining consciousness, she spent the rest of the encounter (which took far longer than it should have done, thanks to some bad rolls by the players and some annoyingly good ones by the GM) hiding behind a table, far away from the action. With no healers around, her remaining turns proceeded something like this:

Me (GM): It's Drea's turn.
Avec (Drea): Nope.
Me (GM): It's Fenrion's turn...

Milton survived longer than the other two, but ended up joining Drea in her hiding place by the end of the battle. Thankfully, Father Zantus showed up afterwards to get them all into fighting shape again.

The Barrel

The orange display wasn't the only inanimate object at risk from the PCs. Silver was taking cover behind a rain barrel in the day's final encounter, and fired an arrow at the goblins. She rolled a natural 1, however, and somehow managed to hit the barrel itself, causing the rainwater inside of it to leak out. Someone else actually hit the same barrel after that, but I don't remember the exact circumstances.

The Back Attack

The "Barrel" encounter was supposed to be an opportunity for the players to either A) save the dog, or B) ambush the goblins, who would be too distracted by their kill to notice the players. Both parties managed to fail on both counts.

The first party was just too hesitant to save the dog, while the second was distracted by Milton. He had already skinned one dog that day, and he was eyeing up the possibility of another. This earned him a slap from Drea.

As for the ambush, Calideon ruined his party's chances of gaining that advantage by walking into the goblins' view and shouting something along the lines of, "Hey, over here!". Half of the second party just tried charging the goblin commander, but at least Fenrion, a rogue, was able to get a sneak attack off against one of the regular goblins.

I'd say the second party handled it slightly better than the first, but before they get too big-headed, I should point out that they almost let the goblin commander kill Foxglove, the nobleman. He was left with just 1 HP. The first party had taken the precaution of sending the member they judged to be the least useful (hint: he carries an Oud) back to the cathedral with Foxglove to ensure his safety.

The Silver Point

When all was said and done, Foxglove was extremely grateful to the players for saving him. "I can't thank you enough," he said, to which Romsa replied, "Maybe you can." While his companions tried to talk him out of haggling for a reward, Foxglove started slowly backing away from him. He gave chase, and ended up begging for 1 SP, which Foxglove threw at him before running away. Only afterwards did Romsa stop to ask how much 1 SP was worth, and he wasn't best pleased to learn that it was just one-tenth of a GP.

Titles Awarded

You can use these titles the next time you play (and only then), if you wish. They come with small benefits, which you'll have to remember and remind me about. :P

  • Loffrey the Liability - awarded for rolling a 1 when attacking with his whip, causing it to fly out of his hand on the backwards stroke. Can re-roll the first natural 1 of the session.
  • Silver the Wayward - awarded for missing with virtually every arrow. 50% chance of retrieving arrows after a miss becomes 75%.
  • Calideon the Irritating - awarded for not telling a goblin he had just charmed to stop attacking Loffrey. +2 bonus from Deceitful feat becomes +3.
  • Romsa the Goblinbane - awarded for single-handedly defeating almost every goblin. +1 to attack rolls against goblins.
  • Sydney the Pieladin - awarded for being covered with various foods. +1 bonus to Handle Animal checks.
  • Milton the Greedy - awarded for thinking about dog pelts and money above all else. 10% bonus when selling items.
  • Drea the Bored - awarded for having nothing to do for most of the second fight, and then having to act last in the third. +1 bonus to Initiative.
  • Fenrion the Clear-Headed - awarded for thinking independently in order to perform a Sneak Attack after his companions had charged into battle. +1 bonus to all Knowledge checks.

Notes

Party one: When I was telling you about the loot you could take from the goblins (daggers, shortbows, arrows, and so on), I forgot to include the goblin commander's equipment. He had a Masterwork Horsechopper (basically a dagger with +1 to attack rolls, can be sold for 151 GP) and a Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds (can be sold for 150 GP). One of the goblins also had 20 GP on them. How you divide this treasure is up to you - the other party sold their dagger so they could split the profits.

Both parties: You were asking me about XP and levelling up. Since not everyone will take part in every session, it probably is fairer to give out XP rather than level everyone up together. Everyone who took part yesterday got 400 XP. You'll reach level 2 at 1300, which will probably be in the third session, not the second one as I said yesterday.

Keveh and Kuroto: When I gave you 700 XP for session 0, that was assuming the "normal" character advancement speed, but we're now going to be using the "fast" path, so please reduce that to 450. In case anyone else is wondering, they got more XP because there were only three characters (two PCs and an NPC), and XP is divided evenly amongst players.

Calideon the Irritating - awarded for not telling a goblin he had just charmed to stop attacking Loffrey.
No regrets. :monster:

Thanks for the write-up Flint, and for setting all this up. It was a lot of fun and I'm eager to resume! In our session I believe it was a goblin that landed the second blow on the poor, defenceless water barrel.

After accessing the roll20 app on the hangout page from last night - and also after checking the roll20 website - I'm not sure if there's a way to edit character sheets and whatnot when you're not actively GM'ing, Flint. I'll keep looking to see if there is but otherwise we'll just have to remember to put the relevant exp and stuff in when we resume next.

I'd give you a direct link to the game so you don't have to go through Google Hangouts, but the Roll20 editor seems to be down at the moment. :(

Edit: here you go.

Session 2: Local Heroes

Date: Saturday the 29th of August
Time: 13:00 UTC and 18:00 UTC, assuming we have enough players for two sessions
Party limit: 5

Signed up for early session: Keveh Kins, Kuroto, Monterosa
Signed up for late session: Starling, Warrior of Light, Adam

Background

As Sandpoint recovers from the attack and buries its (thankfully few) dead, the citizens do their best to get on with their lives. The cathedral is consecrated the next day during a much more subdued indoor ceremony, but by the end of the week, the goblin attack is remembered mostly with chuckles. Now that the terror of the raid is over, images of goblins accidentally lighting themselves on fire, getting stepped on by horses, or jumping off tall buildings colour memories of the raid in an almost comical light. But one thing the locals haven't forgotten is their new heroes.

Notes

It's been about a week since the attack, so everyone is restored to full HP. If you want to think about doing some shopping in advance, you can get a 10% discount from every shop, and 20% from Savah's Armory, which sells all the usual weapons and armour.

I'd like to play on Saturday, if possible, since my university semester starts again the following Monday, so I can't stay up too late on Sunday night. I might be able to move the early session to Sunday, depending on what you all prefer. I've moved the starting times back by an hour because Avec said she had to go out on Saturday evening.

Sign-ups were very sporadic last time - I had to chase people by PM and on Facebook - so let's try a bit harder this time, alright? :P All you have to do is make a post in this thread saying which of the sessions you'd like to play in. If neither of the times work for you, suggest an alternative. If you'd rather play on Sunday, say that. Thank you!

One of my parents is coming to visit this weekend so it'll probably be too tricky for me to join in. I'll essentially be out of action from 14:00UTC on Saturday through to Monday. So, unless an even earlier session is available or Friday is an option then I'm content sitting this one out!

If we will play on Saturday then both of those times are okay with me (providing that my flat mate is actually going away for the weekend, I'm starting to fear that she won't). But I don't mind playing on Friday or have an early session on Sunday either.

In short: If there will be only one session, I'll play in that. If we end up having two sessions then I can take part in the one that has less participants. :) And if for some reason my flat mate stays home and I can't do the later session, I'll let you know. ^_^

I can do the early Saturday session. Have to attend a party on Saturday evening so I'll be gone from about 7 my time onwards. (Which I think is 18:00 UTC?)

As I have to work til 12:30/1:00 my time, I will only be able to participate in the later session, but will only be available til 6:00pm EDT (although we say EST, bitches :P )

Update to my situation: my flat mate is not leaving so that means that as long as we finish before 19UTC I can play. Also Friday might not be good after all because I might see a friend then (this is something we've agreed on already a week ago). That's not certain yet but I'm just giving you a warning so that you know just in case.

Saturday I could do the 1300 UTC session so long as it doesn't go on for over three hours. Sunday at 1400 UTC would be ideal, like last week.

I'd rather play on Saturday, but I don't mind bringing it forward an hour if all the early session players agree to it. But unless they tell me otherwise, we'll start at the agreed time.

Update: I'm not going to be home until a quarter past 12 (UTC) / 15 (Finnish) so we can't start then. :P We'll stick to the original time.

Guys! I've been trying to find someone to save my sister's cats from being sent to yhe SPCA, but have had no luck, and apparently Force and I are the last denizen of hope for them. My cousin (with whom they have been staying) has decided they need to be out NOW, so that's going to consume the rest of our day/weekend (they live in our hometown a couple of hours away). Regrettably, this means we won't be able to join today :( I'm so sorry for the last minute notice!

Session 2 report

Overview

The PCs found that they were recognised throughout the town of Sandpoint. Most of its citizens were very thankful for their part in fending off the goblin attack, but some of them had other ideas. The sheriff, Belor Hemlock, put them to work again, investigating a broken crypt at the cathedral's boneyard/graveyard. A young woman - well, girl - by the name of Shayliss Vendor took a fancy to one of the adventurers, but wasn't entirely forthcoming in her attempts to seduce them. Nor was her father best pleased to find them together in the basement of his shop. Aldern Foxglove, the Magnimarian nobleman the PCs had saved, took them out for a boar hunt and generously bought each one of them a horse.

Loffrey (Keveh Kins), Silver (Kuroto) and Romsa (Monterosa) took part in the early session, while Sydney (Warrior of Light), Milton (Adam) were joined by Delora (Starling), making her début, in the late session.

The Walk

Both parties were invited to explore the town by randomly picking numbers from the Sandpoint map. The early session's group found themselves at the theatre, where Loffrey was recruited to play himself in a dramatic recreation of the fight against the goblins. Romsa muscled his way into the play as well but had to settle for a non-speaking part. The late session's group headed straight for the Hagfish, somewhat predictably. Milton took up the pub's infamous challenge of drinking from "Norah's tank", and managed to keep the foul-tasting water down, earning him a tidy profit. Meanwhile, Sydney only had eyes for Delora.

The Vault

Both parties were very cautious about making their way through the desecrated vault - for the most part. Romsa, unable to see well in the low-light conditions, tripped going down the steps and knocked Silver over. In her prone position, she happened to spot a magical "Robe of Bones" lying next to her on the floor.

The Seduction

As GM, I had to guess which characters might be most receptive to the advances of a young, attractive, red-headed female. I think I picked well: both Loffrey and Milton couldn't resist having their egos stroked a little. I had a little chuckle at how similarly they reacted: Loffrey slicked his hair back as he walked over to her, while Milton licked two fingertips and ran them across his eyebrows. They both accepted her request to help kill some rats in her father's store.

Milton almost had something other than his ego stroked as well. He kept his rendezvous with Shayliss a secret from his fellow party members, and was happily making out with her in the general store's basement when her father arrived on the scene. Loffrey had shown a little more prudence, pulling away when Shayliss tried to lead him over to the bed, but he didn't notice her father's approach either. Perception is a useful skill, people. :P

Shayliss's pick-up line? "There's a reason I invited you here, and it's not for rats." I'll have to try that one sometime.

The Father

There were four possible ways out of the encounter with Ven Vinder, Shayliss's father: bluffing, diplomacy, fighting and running.

Loffrey tried bluffing, failed, and ended up in a fight which he quickly lost. (Level 2 just can't soon enough, eh Kev?) Thankfully, he had asked Romsa and Silver to wait for him outside the store, and when he didn't emerge, their suspicions rose. They had to break down the store's back door, but it's a good thing they did, because they arrived just in time to stop Loffrey from bleeding out. I think he had about four rounds left to make a Constitution check of increasing difficulty before he would have been an ex-bard. Still, their handling of the situation left a lot to be desired as well: Silver also tried bluffing her way out of the situation, failed, and had to resort to diplomacy. Just as she was offering to pay 13 GP, up front, to replace the broken door, Romsa made a leaping attack against Ven, and rolled ridiculously well, landing a critical hit with his greatsword for a scarcely believable 30 HP of damage. But as Shayliss started crying over her wounded father, Romsa had a pang of conscience, and gave up one of his healing potions... bought for 40 GP. Shayliss was under strict instructions to administer the potion after their party had departed.

Milton had to handle his encounter alone, and he took a much simpler route: when diplomacy didn't work, he bravely ran away. Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Milton.

Ven might not be too happy with you from now on!

The Boar Hunt

Romsa was determined to ride into battle, but his steed didn't really fancy it. He spent three rounds trying, and failing, to persuade it to carry him over to the boar. Silver tried helping (with a Handle Animal check), but she was no use either. This waste of time wasn't great for Foxglove's own horse, who succumbed to the boar's savage teeth.

Sydney, on the other hand, seemed distracted by a different battle: the one between himself and Foxglove for Delora's affections. Despite his lawful good nature, Sydney couldn't help but take pleasure in Foxglove's missed attacks, which only increased when Delora cast a spell of Obscuring Mist over the battlefield. For what it's worth, I don't think Delora was interested in either of them. :P

Titles Awarded

You can use these titles the next time you play (and only then), if you wish. They come with small benefits, which you'll probably have to remind me about.

  • Loffrey the Lucky - awarded for being saved from the jaws of death (again) by his team-mates. +1 to any single die roll (must be declared before rolling).
  • Silver the Frustrated - awarded for almost always having to fire into melee (and then missing). -4 penalty for firing into melee is reduced to -2.
  • Romsa the Clumsy - awarded for acting first and thinking later. +1 HP.
  • Sydney the Jealous - awarded for competing with Foxglove for Delora's affections. +1 to saving throws in the presence of a woman.
  • Milton the Rash - awarded for not bothering to find out how old Shayliss was before engaging in a spot of debauchery. Hint: she's 17. Can use Knowledge (Local) without putting any skill ranks into it.
  • Delora the Prepared - awarded for gathering mulberries and turning them into magic berries, enough to feed her whole party. +1 to Profession (Herbalist) checks.

Notes

The early group got 440 XP, but I don't remember how much the late group got. I'll edit this post when someone reminds me. :monster:

We only played about 60% of what I had planned (or what the Rise of the Runelords book had planned), but that's fine; we'll play the rest next time. The story will pick up from the place we left it, though, so you won't all be rested and healed to full health. Father Zantus is always willing to help you in that regard, though. :)

Some of you will reach level 2 next time we play, so you might want to start thinking about things like new spells in advance.

The next session will probably be on Sunday. Let me know if you have any objections, and I'll put up the full details in a day or two.
