Trying to explain the magninitude of this Remake to people who don't get FF

Neither of my parents play any games. My mom legitimately does enjoy the story though. She likes Advent Children and the ability to watch games like a movie. She's often expressed confusion as to how I managed to get invested in the little lego graphics but from the other Compilation stuff she likes it. (Her favorite game I ever showed her, actually, is Xenosaga.)

My dad is much less involved, though he's vaguely familiar with the characters and that Aerith died and made my sister cry. As a business guy, he's mostly been mystified over the years that Square has left all this money on the table by not remaking it. So he appreciated it from that angle, haha

If I'm dealing with parents, I'm dealing with encroaching senility, so I just nod and smile, or shake my head and smile. The response to such is generally the same :P. I find arguing fruitless. If I ever argue with them, it is generally to vent, and isn't productive :P. Even if I seemingly manage to convince them on one occasion, they'll continue believing in what they initially did anyway, as is evident when the same point is discussed again later. I think that's pretty natural in most people actually, not just old folks :P. New ideas tend not to take root easily. That's just being human. No one in my irl social circles gives a damn about FFVII, so haven't found it necessary to bring it up in discussion. Any gaming they're interested in is not FF-related :P.

Oh man, I love this thread. I never thought about FF7 and parents being a topic but it's a good one, ha! This past Saturday I actually showed my mom game-play from the original so she could see the actual difference between the remake and the polygons. My mom enjoys animated movies and such and she really likes Star Trek and Star Wars.

The problem here is the lack of interest after the fact. I think like Lex said, you HAVE to have played it because it isn't all about the visuals. If it was, I think EVERYONE would be obsessed because the visuals are now stunning... but. I think it's more about the story and bonding with said characters over hours and hours where you truly appreciate what's being remade.

Now I won't even bother with my dad. He didn't even know who Darth Vader was. DARTH VADER. If you knew my dad it wouldn't be surprising though... you people with gaming dads are lucky. Mine just watches TV and eats (and works). He's not fat though, surprisingly...

My dad is convinced that video games are what has ruined my generation, and my mom doesn't have a clue about any game newer than Frogger.

Fortunately, I have students, who I can force to listen to FF soundtracks before class and in my office. Some of them get it.

Yup, definitely a great point of working with students :)
I work with Masters students myself, and it's quite easy to share the hype!

This reminds me, I was giddy when my sister played some FF music during her wedding, while people waited for the ceremony. :awesome: I'm totally going to do that for my wedding someday. <3

Is it sad that the only person who's ever really took time to look at FF stuff and liked it in my house is my grandpa? :wacky: I mean he doesn't really have a clue about any of it, but he liked Advent Children and watched it twice, so that has to count for something.
My dad's a big gamer, but he won't play FF games. He says it's not his kind of games and I'm like "BUT YOU'VE NEVER TRIED TO PLAY THEM!" to my knowledge anyway.

How someone doesn't enjoy big arching stories, a wide cast of characters, fun gameplay and a world to explore is beyond me. :O

Isn't it great?

My dad is exactly like this. He swore blind that he'd hate playing a game like Grand Theft Auto but then he played L.A Noire and liked the randomly driving around and trying to run people over parts. So I said to him, "you know what game actually lets you run people over? GTA." And now I can't get him to stop playing GTA5 -_-

He watched the FFVIIR trailer yesterday and was actually intrigued by the battle. This coming from someone who swears he hates RPGs. But well, maybe I can get him to try a little of the remake... I asked him if he knew anything about the original and found that the extent of his knowledge is that you could date Barret  (he remembered me talking about it once) he's an example of a gamer who doesn't know one of the biggest spoilers of FFVII.

But yeah. Not even my brother, who originally introduced me to FFVII, is excited about the remake. His response was 'that's interesting.' No you don't understand! But I don't know maybe he's playing it cool and freaking out in private. The only good response I've gotten is that if I don't have the money for a (possible) limited edition PS4/FFVIIR then dad will make up the difference because he understands how much I love the game :'( thanks dad.

I've given in with most of my friends. Final fantasy is lost on idiots who play Fifa, need for speed and call of duty.. things like final fantasy are gamer's games. I have conned my little brother into trying the remake after saying it looked boring. Told him I'd buy him a Ped for his 16th birthday if he could complete it and explain the plot to me accurately.

Man, that's awesome!
I'm much less subtle, myself. I'm more like "you there, go watch the latest trailer of FF7: R and then you can carry on with your experiment" :P

I've got a few gamer friends and I'm really embarrassed for them cos they've never played any FF (hardly real gamers, right?) so, one guy in particular listens to me raving about them a lot and said that maybe he should try FF out. Awesome, I said! We talked over what consoles he's got and stuff and I said maybe X would be a good one for him, to get him into the series, cos we have a mutual friend who loved it and has told him it was really good, and he said to me, 'But it won't make sense cos I haven't played any of the 9 before it?' Oh man. I nearly thumped him. I tried to explain but he just didn't get it and it confuses me cos I've never even for a moment thought they were all sequels or whatever? IDK he loves me I'll convince him eventually.

Luckily for me I was a good big sister and brought my brother and sister up to love FF like me (by forcing it on them) so they are just as jazzed as me about the remake and we can discuss it and be excited together, which is sick. And we'll all play together when it comes out, same as we do with all the others :D

*salutes CrashOuch* Good job. It is because of siblings like you, that siblings like me, came out so awesome. My brother (who's 8 years older than I), is the one who bought FF7 back in '97. I will never forget falling in love with the music and seeing an awesome poster he put up on the wall that he had gotten from PlayStation magazine which inspired me to draw Cloud-like characters as a kid.

I will also never forget a little scorpion stinging his big toe as he played the game and him freaking out. Ah, memories. I guess I summoned a real live boss for my brother.

Here is the exact poster that I mentioned above. I still think that's the most badass interpretation of RedXIII I've seen to date, lol.

You know what. SE needs to recreate that poster. And make it an alternate cover (because I actually like the simplicity of the meteor).

I told my SO about the game, showed her the trailer.

She loved Cloud's "not interested" line. I think she's starting to get it, although only a little. I'm so going to have her play the original before Remake is released.

LOL. Yeah, my brother often asks me what games I am currently playing and I often say Final Fantasy 14. He always says something like, "oh, yeah, Cloud is awesome." I usually just reply with a "uh huh" because I don't feel like explaining that Cloud has nothing to do with 14.

My dad was (is?) something of a gamer, although he played stuff like Doom and Myst (and pinball. So much pinball). We didn't have a console in the house through most of my adolescence, but my sister managed to save up and buy a used PS2 while she was in middle school and I was in college...she mostly wanted it for DDR, I think, haha. But we got typical racing games like Burnout, which he was SUPER into. He never played anything like FF games, but he did watch me as I played FFVII for the first time when I was 22. He thought the battle system was silly, because why would anyone just stand around and wait to be hit? :whacky: But he saw that I was super into it, and knows that I have continued to play more FF games along the way. When my parents came to visit me in Philly shortly after the original E3 remake announcement, I showed them the E3 trailer.

And I cried.

They said it looked cool and poked fun at me for being so emotionally invested, hahaha. But they were nice about it.

Most people I gush on about it to who are only mildly into gaming smile and nod at me while I freak the hell out as I get super into it and why it's so awesome and so important and so beautiful and amazing and aaaaaaaaaaaa

This is why I love having this community <3

This. I hear this all the time from my SO. :wacky:
I'm like "it's called STRATEGY...like checkers or something". And of course I always take the time to explain this even though he's just being a pest about it when he sees me playing. :wacky:
