Mateus is too cool for a backstory. 
The closest thing to a backstory we have is told in the game in the Mysidian library. That he once challenged the world to see who could reach his daughter on a high floor of his castle. Many men tried this challenge but they all failed until one man used a hot air balloon to reach her. The emperor was furious and embarrassed by this and swore revenge, from which the Emperors' desire for conquest was born.
Actually we're not sure if that's a previous Emperor or Mateus, but it'd be fucking hilarious if that was what caused him to go evil

Emperor Mateus is one of my mains and I have to say playing with him is extremely enjoyable, and requires A LOT of focus and forethought. He's a thinking man's character.

I only know Mateus from Dissidia, I'm afraid, but I find his character highly interesting (now I'm reading the Discworld books, I can't help but compare him with Havelock Vetinari...).
*cough* Also, I only have one character at lvl 100, and they're a rank F. The Emperor at lvl 50 is currently my only rank SSS character. But then, I find his trap style intuitive.
