Woo it's the Atlantic federation! That's kind of like getting to play as Rozarrians in FF12. Neat.

Yeah this doesn't look like shit. Guess I have to live to see 2018 then :monster:

lol, I had the Kotaku article on the Google start page for Chrome on my phone. They must know me.

I didn't even notice the Atlantic Federation thing when I watched it before work this morning, I was too distracted by the fear and suspense of the words "iOS and Android" potentially appearing on my screen XD.

But yay! Also Hitoshi Sakimoto returning!

A localisation producer posted this over on ResetEra (in the VC4 announcement thread):

::taps mic::

Hello, is this thing on?

Hey everyone, it's Sam Mullen, Senior Localization Producer here at SEGA/Atlus, and I just wanted to poke my head in and say hi and let you know we are super excited that you're super excited with the announcement of Valkyria Chronicles 4.

I know there's a lot of questions about how this is going to play out, and certain... elements... seem to be missing from the announcement, but we do hear you and hope that you will stick with us as we move into 2018 and unveil more information about VC4 over the coming months. We are literally in the middle of recording the English dub, and the EU Language translations are currently underway, so while everything feels very 'Japan-focused' at the moment, trust me when I say that this is a global initiative and we are rolling this one with all the perks.

There's definitely more to reveal and talk about in the future, so stay tuned!

So I just discovered Skirmishes on Hard.

HOLY SMOKES! The hell is one supposed to take those three camps in just one turn?! (for A rank)

OOOOOO I love me a challenge. I'm not going to look up any how to's for this. I'm going to try figuring it out on my own. YAY! Although it's going to take me a while

I'm really looking forward to VC4 or even VC2/3 remastered because I'm blasting through the harder battles with orders and Rosie/ Alicia and even though the stories in 2 and 3 might suck compared to 1 that fresh challenge of battles you're not familiar with is something I'm really going to relish.

I've played a bit of 2 and it's every bit as tactically brilliant as 1, I just wasn't that into the weird high school plot and this game really needs to be played on the big screen.

GAMEPLAY!!!

Starts at 1:49:10

Super glad to say it looks the same as the original (which was really the same in 2 and 3 also, with a few bells on). That class symbol I didn't recognise seems like a gunner/ turret class, can be moved. They start using it at 1:59:55 if anyone wants to see that in particular.

Also looks like they're using the same music - potentially they are just using the same music with a few extra tracks (this wouldn't bother me tbh) but it could just be placeholder.

EDIT: Seems like the new squad are part of "Edinburgh Army 101st Division No. 1 Battle Brigade"

Edinburgh you say

In the right thread this time (I hope):

Finished VC1. Gameplay is outright great...story is mostly lifted directly out of WW2, apart from the idea that there's a secret weapon buried under Brussels that will allow them to dominate Europe, obviously that could never hap-

Wait.

Poor Hannes is my only casualty, although reloaded game overs have more.

Yeah there's definitely something XII about that part... it might be something from VC too actually now that I think about it...

I just love how this theme fits with this particular entry in the series. It's less drama beautiful creys and more adventurous and heroic, and a little bit bold. It's perfect.

Okay I'm on chapter 5. Impressions so far: The main story is okay; it's not VC quality storytelling but it's fine. The comic relief characters and scenes are good. The subplot stories are a bit bleh, not exactly great writing, but it's fine. The voice work is overall fine, there are some occasional annoying stuff going on but all the main cast voice actors are great. I'll have a hard time picking a favourite but both Kai and Raz are excellent, especially Raz. He could have come out a parody but he doesn't. The battles though is what makes this game worth the money. I haven't played 2 or 3 so I haven't seen the full progress over the series, but I can definitely see how they improved the maps and scenarios since VC. I'm gonna say they're better than VC's battles. They also added some new elements that adds more fun and strategy to the table. I'm enjoying those so far.

So yeah... it's not VC but nothing can ever be VC. I'm happy with the game so far.

Okay so I've reached chapter 12 and I gotta say shit really picked up. This game is a lot bigger than I anticipated and I'm currently pretty hooked, a lot more than I suspected I'd be around chapter 7. It has some surprises in store and it's really giving me VC vibes atm. I need to spoiler tag rant later but right now I am all played out and I need sleep X)

I can see why some people have problems with the groping and the being owed a bikini babe and the 'she's only good for one thing' lines, but it only strikes you as really bad if you read it out of context. While I can understand some people seeing Raz's talk of women and his butt groping as sexual harassment - and I'm not defending the "the boys only pull your hair because they like you" behaviour - but it really is his way of covering up how he really is clueless and inexperienced and to use that cliche, insecure. He's in love with Kai and pretty much has been all his life but all his attempts at explaining it fails. And what's worth mentioning is that part of Raz's character arc (and growth) is that he grows out of his immature ways and swears to stand by Kai's side no matter what. It's only when he realises what caring for someone really is he actually stands a chance with her. There's even a distinct change in his voice. Now you could say the trying to kiss her part is kind of entitled - she asks him for some time and some weeks? later he 'can't stand it any more' - that scene could have been handled better. I guess they wanted Kai to punch him to show she still has the upper hand (fist), but anyway. In the end it's her choice to accept him, but I totally get it if people read it as a 'giving in to your harasser' type point. The way he says 'now that's a knockout' or what it is really is a good summary of it all. People and your relationships to them are so much more powerful than any fist or gun. It's a very telling visual image that he's physically lying on the ground. idk maybe that punch was there to set up that specific image. Either way it's cute. And also this ship is hot. I'm glad they resolved it halfway but I guess they had to because Riley and Claude. Now I'm just worried one of them is gonna day.

idk it feels like the game is aware of the problematic stuff and tries to explain them in a way? Raz is a pig and he should have been told by his squad members, I agree, but the game clearly says he's a dumbass who puts the other soldier's lives on the line with his behaviour, and that he's not being a good soldier when he lets his rush-in ego lead him. Also the guy who delivers the 'only good for one thing' line is clearly set up as a bad guy/ terrible person and we're not meant to like him or defend him, we're meant to hate him.

Yeah so I get what people are saying but I'm willing to look past it, even if how it is handled does seem a little outdated.

Can I just say how broken this vehicle ride/ Commander thing is? xD It basically lets you travel all over the place in very few turns. The maps are bigger though, plus the Grenadiers make up for it somewhat, but I found a grinding spot on Skirmish 4 that gives me 22k EXP in like two minutes. Deploy Dan, deploy Scout, ride car for two CP, run Scount for two CP, profit. You get Squad stories from it as well if you change your Scouts now and then. Win.

The Grenadiers is a nice addition to the game. I'm glad they kept all the other classes, although I'm barely using Lancers. (I even had problems remembering they're called 'Lancers' right now...) Good thing they kept the number of Engineers, Grenadiers, Lancers and Snipers down compared to Scouts and Shocktroopers. Speaking of Shocktroopers... that 35 clip gun? SO MUCH FUN. Shocktroopers were good in the last game but in this one, paired with Dan and a Scount Command, they're completely OP. I've been using them a lot more than Scouts for this game.

The maps are bigger and more complex, and so far the game's given me a proper run for my money (and skills.) I've even Game Over'd a few times, but that's mostly for going YOLO. Some maps are surprisingly easy to A rank, others take stupidly long. But I'm gonna A rank all of them in the end without looking them up, I'm pretty sure.

Ship orders? Kind of cheating if you ask me, but at least you only get one per map.

The 'Recall all' order. I WANT IT. But I'm probably never gonna get it.

You can even equip Smoke rounds on the Hafen. I haven't gotten a good use of it yet as Grenadiers seem to be able to see through it (might have just been my placement) but it's a good thing to have.

Accessories. WHY DID THEY ADD THIS! It just adds so many minutes to my tweaking. I've basically stopped using them unless it's anti-tank, added AP and added aim or defense.

The Squad stories are a nice addition and I'm super excited every time I see a new one.

I love how you can change your squad from the deploy menu. It's an improvement from VC.

The 'fast forward' function could have been faster X) X)

The game really picked up around chapter 9/10 and I'm thoroughly loving it right now. Again, it's not VC's story quality, but it's good enough to keep me properly entertained. The Angie thing could have been another Hans thing, but so far I'm liking it. Pretty sure it's setting up some major plot points for Riley's story.

I am completely in love with Raz's voice actor, Riley and Claude is great, Kai as well, oh and the ship captain, but fucking Minerva

FUCKING MINERVA

She just grinds my gears and when she was added to my team I was like FUCK OFF I'M NOT USING YOU except I have to because she has a CP plus she's overall pretty handy

But yeah I was relieved when she kind of stopped being a vital part of the story. She nearly ruined it for me. I don't know if it's the pitch in her voice, or how she was directed... I'm only guessing she is supposed to sound that annoying, but man, they're setting her up for so much hate.
Yeah I think that's it for now X)

Yeah, I uh

This really is a poorer version of VC storywise. I reached the chapter where
Raz dies - and now I know he stays dead because I looked up his character sheet because I was so mad about the final battle I rage quit and just wanted to see if they resurrect him, but they don't, DO THEY HATE DARCSENS? Like, I guess it was to be 'if Isara got to choose instead of just dying' but yeah I hate that they did that, and I hate it even more when it means he only got together with Kai because he needed a reward for volunteering to suicide mission UUGGHH
and yeah let's just say I'm really meh about the story right now. Also that final battle... it's not that it's hard, because it's not, but was that really all they could cook up?
A major ass tank? I am disappoint.
So I'm yet to finish but I'm taking a break because what makes this game worth the money is the gameplay and the battles, Raz's VA and some well written character moments. But if you get this game, get it for the battles, not for the story.

Gonna replay VC later to rinse my palette.
