Voice Acting Discussion

Definitely. Even in the theater class I took in highschool when you were given a role, you looked into what emotion the script called for. If it was an out of context monologue, you researched to find the missing context and understand who you were speaking as. While body language won't be seen in voice acting, it's probably still help for getting in character.

Pixel

The Pixie King
Most voice actors, when they go for a role like this aren't told what it is for, or its given a code name. Type-0 was code named 'Yellow P'. :P They wouldnt have had a chance to look into it much when they did AC. I would hope for the remake, they now have more to go on, or will get to see who these characters are through the process.

Aaron Eckhart as Cloud Strife

After watching Aaron's role as the tortured Harvey Dent (AKA Two-Face) in The Dark Knight, I can imagine how much personality he could bring to the conflicted protagonist Cloud Strife.

Lena Headey as Tifa Lockhart

She may star in Game of Thrones as Cersei Lannister, but Lena Headey has already voiced a game character as Callista Curnow in 2012's Dishonored. Her strong yet empathetic tone is spot-on for Tifa.

Amanda Seyfried as Aerith Gainsborough

Amanda Seyfried is a versatile actress with many roles under her belt. Ultimately, it's her performance in the animated feature Epic that makes me think she'll be a nice fit for Aerith with her youthful and warm inflection.

Mr. T as Barret Wallace

This may sound silly, but who else would be better suited for such a short-tempered tough guy? I pity the fool who disagrees!

Amy Poehler as Yuffie Kisaragi

Again, this seems like an odd choice. However, after listening to Amy's fantastic voice work as Joy in the new film Inside Out, it's quite clear how she could add a great deal of charm to the already eccentric Yuffie.

Liam Neeson as Vincent Valentine

Vincent Valentine is a dark and secretive enigma, so it's an obvious choice for him to have Liam Neeson's gravelly undertones.

Alan Rickman as Red XIII

Mr. Rickman's no stranger when it comes to voice acting as heard in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Alice in Wonderland. I believe his classy and sly delivery would be perfect for Red XIII.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Cait Sith

Characters don't get much more unconventional than Cait Sith. So, why not have Modern Family's flamboyant Jesse Tyler Ferguson play him? If he did, it would add even more levity to the character and make Cait Sith stand out to a greater extent than he already does.

Will Arnett as Cid Highwind

Cid is the foul-mouthed pilot of the Highwind who swears and smokes more than a sailor. No one could fulfill this role better than the man behind Lego Batman and BoJack Horseman; the one, the only Will Arnett.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Sephiroth

As far as antagonists go, Sephiroth is one of the most noteworthy adversaries in gaming history. Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of the tyrannical Smaug and the unquestionably serious yet sharp-witted Sherlock Holmes make him the best candidate to play such a disturbed yet possibly misunderstood character.

^I personally would love Liam Neeson as Vincent, but only if he does the entire role in his native Belfast accent and dialect.

"Hojo...he's Sephiroth's daddy."

One can dream :awesome:

I feel like Liam Neeson's original accent has been lost from being in America far too long XD

Yoooo, I know I shouldn't be laughing, but this scene has me DYING, fam. I hope they don't put that line in word-for-word, because it just killed the whole mood.

And I was feeling some type of way too, because this is the first time I've played with these HD mods and watching Cloud beat the shit out of Aerith actually made me a little sick.

And then.

Also that line wasn't funny when I played through recently but OH my God for some reason it's really funny with the HD mod. Sephiroth looks mildly taken aback like "whaa cloud who told you to feel".

Right. I have never in my life laughed at that line until now. I think it's because of the discernible facial features of the Dissidia models in combination with the lack of actual facial expression. It completely changes the tone of the line. He sounds like that one asshole friend who hurts your feelings on accident, but is an asshole, so doesn't actually know how to apologise.

And it's right after Cloud hands off the Black Materia. It's less upsetting with the original models, or even other mods, but with this one (in conjunction with the sound effects) it's very apparent that he's wailing on her. It honestly looks like he only stops because Tifa jumps down and literally knocks him the hell out.

I truly do not know what's funnier: that terrible line, or the almost conversational tone Cloud takes when he's indignantly defending the fact that he has feelings.

...Actually, he's got that same tone with Sephiroth quite frequently, and no matter how many times I play the game it's forever jarring to me because I always think, "Why is he talking like he was friends with the guy." And then I remember, right, he thinks he's Zack.

What I don't understand is Sephiroth humouring this, since before Nibelheim I don't think they actually spoke, and he would not know Cloud from Adam if Cloud hadn't chopped his spine in half fought him in the reactor. I mean, there is so much potential there.

Cloud: Sephiroth! I trusted you! I admired you! I wanted to be just like you, and you took away my village and my family! You are not the Sephiroth I knew!

Sephiroth is clearly humoring him to make the reveal more brutal. I'd rather they don't change the line too much, as I found Sephiroth's insistence on invalidating Cloud's feelings about Aerith's death to be an important part of that scene.

That is exactly what makes him stop. He's having a mental breakdown in that moment. It's SUPPOSED to be unsettling. And even with the blocky models, with those sound effects, what did you think he was doing?

Wow. I looked up a Let's Play really fast on YouTube of the Temple of the Ancients. I even found one with the blocky models to make sure the sounds weren't added in later and sure enough, there they were. I just played that scene not even a week ago and somehow completely forgot about Cloud beating up Aerith.

Geez. :( Sephiroth had a hold on him good. I don't want to see that in the remake. I mean, I do. It's important. But I don't wanna watch it.

That scene of Cloud beating up Aerith really surprised me when I first played the game. I was like, "What? Is he really beating her up?!"
I want to see them put it in the remake because of the feelings it gives you, that shock, and because it was in the OG and shows how messed up Cloud is, but that's gonna be hard to watch.
This game will get an M rating for sure if that's included.

There is no way this game is escaping an M/18+ rating unless they take out considerable amounts of scene and dialogue, or get very creative with discretionary camera angles.

I've never played Agito/Type-0, but it had a mature rating, no? Was it just because of the blood, or was it also the explicit themes of violence and child soldiers?

Because FFVII has both in abundance.

I would like Nolan North for whatever role which almost nobody will be able to guess before the credits roll (examples: David in the Last of Us, or the Space core in Portal 2)

With the change in direction of Cait Sith's dialect in the Compilation titles, do you think they'll ever consider voicing him with lines that are (quite blatantly) not Scottish in tone - that is to say, bring his lines back to what they were like in the original game, which would then likely be spoken with a different tone? From what I gather of his lines, it might possibly mean toning down Cid's "southern" tone (and that's up to interpretation), but there's an extent of that I'd be willing to accept
I mean, I doubt it, but heck everything's up for discussion, right?

And how about Nanaki? One line in AC/C doesn't quite cut it for great judgement - but I have found it interesting that, from different websites, I have seen reaction to his voice to "be what they expected it to be", quoting "Gabumon" from Digimon as the comparison they wanted the voice to exemplify - (far from a reasonable judgement, but still interesting to see the idea spread)

I'm curious about Jenova. There's that one line in the OG that she supposedly speaks (though not sure if I believe it). Will she get any lines in the remake, and if so, who would voice her?

Sephiroth already got that line in Advent Children, I think they'll keep it that way.

I guess I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. They tried to give Cait a kind of southern accent at some random points in the original game, but if they give him a Scottish voice in the remake he can say the same lines... just with a Scottish accent. Words like "y'all" can just be replaced with "all of you" or something. I'm confused. Am I missing your point here?
