Voice Actors

Am I the only one who thinks they should start over with all new voice actors?

I think thats important to make this game feel as original and fresh as possible.

Even David Hayter didnt do the voice of Solid Snake forever

My choices

Cloud - Ryan Gosling
Tifa - Scarlett Johansson
Aerith - Jennifer Lawrence
Barret - Dwayne Johnson
Sephiroth - Clive Owen
Yuffie - Shailene Woodley
Red XIII - Andy Serkis
Rufus - Edward Burns
President Shinra - Donald Sutherland
Cid - Chris Pratt
Hojo - Paul Giamatti

I honestly don't care, as long as the end result is good. I can't imagine they'll go with celebrity actors, though; hiring everyone your list would be ludicrously expensive.

No offense but I'm not sure I can see either of these women doing either of these roles. But it's just my personal taste. They're fine actresses, I'm sure they could make it work.

Barret - Dwayne Johnson

Oh my god... think of the in-jokes! "CAN YOU SMELL WHAT BARRET IS COOKING?!"

Sephiroth - Clive Owen

Not familiar with enough of their work to make a decision but when I saw "English" I was like "he could work". I know it makes no sense, but when I was a kid I always pictured Sephiroth having a slight british accent. I have no idea where that came from.

Red XIII - Andy Serkis

... Gollum?

President Shinra - Donald Sutherland

Yes. This. 100% This. When I did my pretend live action dream cast list I made the same call. President Snow is pretty much President Shinra anyways.

As for me, I agree with Flint. We all have our "dream cast" but people from nowhere or who you wouldn't expect can deliver amazing performances.

That said, were he still alive, I think Mako would have made a great voice for Bugenhagen... plus I mean come on... that pun.

Yeah, that's a lot of big names that would usually happen for an animated movie in Hollywood. In my opinion, there are better voice actors within the animation industry suited for the roles.

Nothing against the job Steve Burton did with Cloud, but I'm ready to move on there. The Cloud from Advent Children isnt the Cloud I saw in the original game, so this could never work IMO. I dont want Advent Children Cloud in this remake. In voice, in spirit, or in the flesh.

As for everyone else someone mentioned in this site's E3 podcast that Advent Children's voice acting sounded 'Disney'. Im not sure if it was the writing or the voice acting itself, but it did sound like an animated Disney film. If this remake is going to be as or even more gritty then the original, they have to change up the voice acting.

This may sound a bit weird, but the Advent Children Barret sounded like a PG character, Im sure Dwayne Johnson could upgrade that to PG-13 grit, and Samuel L Jackson would push it into R territory. Not in terms of language of course, but rather intensity.

Also I think they need at least 2 big name A list celebs to help give the game more cred and exposure. This is one of those projects thats going to need to sell multiple millions of copies anyway just to break even, might as well go all out.

I don't get why people think it's so important to have well known celebrities to voice characters. Acting in live-action stuff where your voice, body language and facial expressions matter is very different from things where only your voice will be heard. What's important is that they get voice actors who can deliver a performance that conveys all the right emotions and intensity, as well as someone who can do good enough voice direction to make sure those are the takes we get.

I may be in the minority, but I really liked Steve Burton as Cloud. With good direction, I don't have a problem with him keeping the role at all. I also just find it endearing that he's a big Cloud fan in real life.

Scar Jo and J Law for Tifa and Aerith? Those are two very smoky-voiced ladies. I can't really hear those voices fitting either of them.

I'm pretty okay with most of the AC cast reprising their roles. And sorry but I disagree that this game needs the help of A-list celebrities to sell copies....this game IS an A-list celebrity (in the videogame world).

Also, if anybody but Quinton Flynn voices Reno I'm out. No seriously, I will not buy this game.

Yeah that would be miserable if they didnt cast him.
Wet and miserable. This place is flooded.

They will definitely keep Flynn since he's in KH and they want to keep Reno and Axel's VA's the same because Axel is an expy of Reno (Vexen and Hojo also shared the same VA) - Also I have no idea why KH does expies of characters when it's a cross over and they could just use those same characters - but whatever.

Honestly though, I'd really like Nanaki to voiced by someone really young to tie into the twist that despite being ancient he's just a kid.

Also, imagine Mr T voicing Barret (and I do think they should have a black VA voice him since he's an iconic black character)

That may very well be the most expensive video game voice cast I've ever seen. I highly doubt Square could ever get any of them to do any voices.

I would rather they stick with the people in the industry. Get some Nolan North, Quinton Flyn, James Arnold Taylor, Josh Keaton, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Tara Strong, etc.

Maybe the most well-known name would be Mark Hamill, but with Start Wars making more movies now maybe he'd be more expensive.

That's another embarassing moment from my childhood "dream cast" list. I even had a joke I thought was soooo funny. "I pity the fool who doesn't know that money is for Marlene's school!"

And hey, Barret does kind of look like Clubber Lang.

Dat hair( except Clubber's is cut into a mowhawk) and dat jawline, not to mention the biceps.

But honestly all joking aside, Samuel L Jackson could actually probably give a pretty decent performance as Barret. The only problem is his voice is higher than I pictured Barret's. All the compilation have given him a voice lower on the spectrum.

A younger / pre gun-arm Barret should be voiced by Jamie Foxx though. Just saying.

I take no issues with the current AC/KH cast with except to Red XIII and Aerith. If they bring back Andrea Bowen, I'm good. But Mena Suvari? Urgh, terrible, sorry. And Red XIII, I felt, should have had a more youthful voice. Sure, he was wise beyond his years but there were a lot of moments that I think younger would be more fitting. Not like.. 20 but y'know.. 30?

I wish they could have Douglas Booth as Rufus, but sticking with industry I'd really like to see Mathew Mercer as Rufus - I like the idea that Rufus - though great at giving speeches - has a sort of gentleness to his voice - a softness about him in all aspects from his beauty and slight stature compared to his father to his speech. Someone who doesn't seem like they'd be as strong as Rufus is...

I also like that he sounds young.

Dilly dally shilly shally was the result of something called lip lock, which is when dialogue has to be changed in translation so that what's said matches up with the mouth movements of the original dialogue. Otherwise you can end up with awkward moments when characters stop talking before their mouths stop moving or keep talking after. I remember the french dub for one of the Harry Potter movies had a particularly noticeable example of that. I don't think there were many other options for that part of the script.

Starling

I don't like having to read subtitles to know what's being said. It diverts my attention away from the characters' faces and body language. I also don't always read it fast enough and end up missing part of what's said or misreading it because I was rushing to avoid falling behind.

Lip lock can be avoided if they're willing to spend the money it takes to re-animate the lip movements so that they're synced for the dub.

I agree, I'm dyslexic and I really can't do subtitles very well - I read slowly. I can do it if I have to - like anime that isn't dubbed yet - but I'd much prefer dubs.

I think another problem with the dilly dally silly shally line is that what Aerith says doesn't exactly translate neatly. It means the sound of feet shuffling right? I mean, they could have had her say 'blah, blah, blah" and a line about making excuses?

Starling

Pro Adventurer
It was the onomatopoeia for dragging something heavy. Dilly-dallying can be interpreted as meandering around, making excuses, etc. I guess saying something about dragging your feet or guilt around wouldn't fit as neatly. I suppose it's not as awkward as the odd pauses lip lock usually causes.

ForceStealer

Double Growth
Why they didn't just go with something like "dragging, dragging. Always dragging," I will never understand. Or some other two syllable word, if you want. But that fits and doesn't sound as silly.
And...I've said this before, but Japanese is weird. Could you imagine in English if you were feeling down about something and your friend starts going "kggggghhhhhhhhh"

At any rate, none of that has anything to do with voice actors :monster:
