Was Aerith's Burial Appropriate?

Digging a proper grave takes hours, and they're in the middle of a chase. They just don't have the time or equipment to do anything fancy, the only other option they might have done would be a pyre.

Not in FFVII. The status is called "Death", and Phoenix Down "Restores life".^"KO" = "Knocked Out", not dead.

Are we sure that isn't a translation quirk though? And even if it isn't, it's pretty clear the characters don't actually die and are then revived every single time in battle, otherwise they would indeed have been able to just shove a phoenix down in Aerith's face and call it a day.

It's a gameplay feature. It would suck if Cloud died against Guard Scorpion and then couldn't be used for the rest of the game. Considering that the revival spel is 'Life' and the instant kill effect is a grim reaper, I think it is what it says it is, and can be reversed for gameplay convenience. It's not intended to be consistent, in the canon storyline, presumably nobody dies in battles.

ok so lets sum this up a bit:
Aerith may not have been dead when Cloud "buried" her, given other evidence we currently have of others suriviving worse stuff (in which case Cloud drowned her! feck u murderer!)
Aerith may have been reviveable if someone had bothered to give her a Phoenix Down or cast Life on her (or the entire team had magicly ran out of MP and Phoenix Downs before hand in which case another feck u to the team for not packing 99 PDs and having eithers for mana restoring!)
