With regard to good starter DM bands I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you want something old-school then yeah Death and CC are great starting points. If you're into prog then I'd recommend Opeth or Cynic or later Death or Lykathea Aflame or something like that.

Decapitated - [Winds of Creation #01] Winds of Creation [4:13]

Meh, it all depends on the person's tastes, I see how listening to Opeth could ease someone into the more extreme genres, though I'd hesitate to call them Death Metal themselves. For me, my first death metal albums were Demigod (Behemoth), Scream Bloody Gore and Tomb of the Mutilated. My first actual Death Metal album I ever bought however was The God That Never Was by Dismember. (To think I almost bought a Killswitch Engage album that day...) Of course that's not counting "other death metal genres" like that Gothenburg crap.

I missed talking music with you guys. :monster:

Arcturus - [Constellation #07] Morax [6:26]

This is how you master an album. Several of the tracks had values of DR14 or higher.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - [Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! #01] Mladic [20:29]

Worth the wait. Definitely going to regret staying up this late to listen to the album when I have to wake up in the morning but it'll probably have been worth it.

Pre-ordered that motherfucker. 2012 AOTY list will be dominated by Non Metal for sure... Swans, Magma, Dead Can Dance, Thinking Plague.... and obviously GY!BE.

Blut Aus Nord - Epitome X

Listening to the trilogy in order and although it's by far their best since The Works... it's not that amazing. Solid it is for sure though.

Muse's new album. Trying to decide whether I want to buy it. It's catchy, but will I be able to go back to it time and again like I can with Origin of Symmetry? Hmmmz.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - ['Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! #03] We Drift Like Worried Fire [19:58]

Can't stop listening to this, and didn't even slightly regret staying up to listen to it when I woke up in the morning.

Sorhin - ...Och Om Natten Min Själ Dansar

I hope this band reforms someday. Not a single bad track, and Black Metal needs these types of quality bands now more than ever now that it's polluted with all these pseudo atmospheric post/shoegaze bollocks. (Biggest bollocks being the shoegaze/blackgaze tag, none of it has much to do with the actual short lived shoegaze thing) But hey, it's droning, noisy and reverby with gay melodies so let's call it shoegaze aswell allright? pfft fuck off.

I hate the term "blackgaze". I like several artists that are tagged as such but yeah, most of them have nothing to do with actual shoegaze. Alcest is the only one for whom the term really fits, and even then on some releases more than others.

40 Watt Sun - [The Inside Room #01] Restless [10:52]

The vinyl pressing isn't that great, but thus far I still like it a lot more than that horribly over-compressed CD. Also, ordered Watching from a Distance from Kreation. The LP reprint will probably sell out quickly so hop on it quickly if you want it.

Dordeduh - some illegible Romanian song title; I think it's the third song on the album

I actually managed to wait until I had a physical copy of an album to listen to it for once. Pf course, it only leaked a couple of days before I got it, so that helped.

Anyway, impressive album. Not sure what some people are bitching about. It sounds like Negura Bunget? What exactly were you expecting? This is two thirds of the core line-up, including the main songwriter. Of course it sounds like Negura Bunget.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - BBF3

I would enjoy the postrock genre much more if most of it was as bleak and honest as this. But no - most other bands in the genre are way more sappy, happy, joyful, sentimental etc. It's no wonder why Godspeed are absolute masters of the genre.

Agreed. Most post-rock doesn't hold even the slightest bit of a candle to the atmosphere, earnestness, and desolation conveyed by Godspeed's music. Yet they still manage not to leave beauty and hope out of their music, which makes it pretty much perfect for me no matter what mood I'm in.

Speaking of which:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - [F♯ A♯ ∞ #01] Nervous, Sad, Poor... [20:46]

I still can't decide whether I like the vinyl versions of these movements more than the CD versions. The vinyl sound quality is definitely better, though. I should pick up my own LP copies of their pre-reunion stuff. I never bothered yet because I bought everything on CD when I still didn't realise the greatness of vinyl.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - [2012-10-01 Live at Orpheum Theatre #02] Mladic [18:53]

oh god why the hell can't they come closer to me than Atlanta for once :sadpanda:

edit: the new song they've been playing live, "Behemoth", rules, and it's a whopping 45 minutes long, which dwarfs anything they've released previously and renders the title quite appropriate. I hope somebody gets a better quality recording of it soon.
