Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film will be called “The Dark Knight Rises” and though the Gotham City auteur isn’t ready to reveal the villain of his 2012 film, he did eliminate one of the big contenders: “It won’t be the Riddler,” Nolan said in an exclusive interview with Hero Complex.

Riddler rumors were off target. (DC Comics)

Nolan was most eager to talk about the fact that Warner Bros. had agreed with his argument that the film should resist the current 3-D craze and instead use high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector.
Check back here later in the morning for a more in-depth look at that decision and the Nolan ambitions and reasons behind it.
As for the title, it shows the writer-director’s intention to keep his Bruce Wayne trilogy tightly stitched together. “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,” Nolan said cryptically. I had an odd thought: What if Nolan somehow brings back Harvey Dent? The only reason I even mention it is because, back during post-production on the second film, Nolan told me that the title “The Dark Knight” was just as much about Dent and his fall from the status of shining-knight civic crusader. Dent was plainly dead at the end of the last film, though, and Nolan has been intent on keeping his Gotham City film firmly rooted in a gritty gangland realism– this isn’t a franchise that has veered off into the supernatural or even much super-science.
Nolan plays things close to the vest — he’s one of the few filmmakers of his generation who actually does wear a vest — and he chuckled when I tried to get a few more details out of him. “Oh, you know me, I don’t talk.” He began our conversation by comparing it with a visit to the dentist’s office. Well, if so, he’s a patient who never opens wide. I asked if he could imagine a time when Warner Bros. would let a filmmaker shoot a Batman script where the villain isn’t one of the signature creations from the comic books. “Ah, Geoff Boucher, master of the leading question,” he said with a chuckle.
That’s when he did agree, however, to eliminate a villain candidate, namely Edward Nigma, the green-suited Riddler, who many people (myself included) assumed was the next natural choice. That character could be taken in a lot of directions — think of Kevin Spacey’s character in “Seven” as a compass point for one of those dark paths — but Nolan and his team are going a different way. As with “Dark Knight,” the new film has a script written by Nolan and his brother, Jonah, and it’s based on a story by the director and David Goyer. Earlier, I got Nolan to take Mr. Freeze off the list and, yes, this is like pulling teeth but don’t think for a minute that I mind. Nolan makes sublime films, and any secrets he wants to keep in place are done so to protect the final product. As for me, I’m hoping now for Hugo Strange who, come to think of it, looks a bit like a dentist…

No 3d and no Riddler(can't carry a main plot in a film on his own) pleases me.

I just hope he doesn't keep up with his ridiculous idea of "Realism".

I like Batman but I'm not completely familiar with all the villains. Who else is compelling enough to carry a plot while staying realistic that hasn't been done already? Penguin? Bane?

Catwoman? I hope it's not her.

No 3D pleases me as well. 3D should only be used if it notably enhances the experience of the film, not just for the heck of it.

Penguin, Bane, Black Mask, Hugo Strange, Arnold Wesker, Firefly, Floyd Lawton, Calendar Man, KGBeast, Wrath, hell even Killer Croc(he was originally just a thug with a really bad skin condition, it wasn't until more modern incarnations that he mutated.

Nolan's hangups on "realism" is ridiculous when he fills his films with tech that just wouldn't work in real life and the entire premise requires some real suspension of disbelief. I mean he said PENGUIN was too unrealistic. He's just a fat mob boss with a big nose and a thing for birds FFS.

Catwoman has never really been a "villain" she would however be great as a supporting character if cast and written properly.

In Nolan's Gotham City, 'real' means everything must be grey and be as visually dynamic as a slab of concrete trying to impress his identical concrete slab friends by being a slightly different shade of grey. Sadly, the grey is still grey, and his friends can't tell the difference.

LOL dude you are so cold. Nolan's "Batman" been pretty good so far, even if he is hung up on visual shit that.

I know its unlikely but Poison Ivy and Killer Croc would be awesome for the third film.

Not going to lie, the pair of them are great films. I just find the lack of visual appeal to be a bit jarring when compared to other really good superhero films like Iron Man or Watchmen.

I'm now hoping for Ivy, seeing as Fries and Riddler are my two other favorite bat-villains. Clayface is obviously out, which saddens me, and I'm not holding hope for Bane, because that would be amazing.

Don't.

There's almost zero chance of Ivy appearing.

I think riddler could have worked for a detective type batman story, but there wouldnt be much batman action.

Catwoman... i dunno, she is a great character. Just dont spend the first 30 mins giving her a crappy backstory. She should be enigmatic, you dont know what side she's on.

I kinda wish they kept twoface for this film. The character was set up pretty well in dark knight, but was taken out pretty swiftly. Though, again I wouldnt know what to do with him.

I think the criminal underworld of gotham will get more screentime with batman branded a fugitive. Everything he worked for has been undermined.

I wonder if we'll see the rebuilt manor and batcave this time round

Catwoman has always had a side, her own. She doesn't get involved in serious crime and loves playing cat and mouse with the Bat.

tbh I felt the same way about Inception. Scratch that. Tom Hardy was very visually appealing :awesome:

I kind of hope for a return of Harvey Dent. The last film just left me wanting more from him. Plus, the actor was under the impression he would perhaps return for another film.

I've always been curious about a Nolanized version of Bane, but it seems unlikely :(

I feel like they kinda blew their load prematurely. How do you follow up the Joker / Two Face performances?

Pretty damn easily with the right script. If the books can do it.....

Also, people kept saying Harvey was "obv" dead but no one who saw it was ever really sure.

Catwoman is one of those characters as a kid I fell in love with when watching the cartoon. Just because she doesn't really seem to give a shit. I don't think she's a villain but she's still part of the Gotham Universe.

But I have to admit I don't know much about the Batman Comic Universe, although I've got some renewed interest in it (I'm totally taking a course in Comic Literature and it is awesome but half the class keeps fapping to The Dark Knight Returns, and I sort of want to know why).

I kind of hope they pick an obscure villain. I've already seen Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy movies, I want to see someone who I don't know a lot about, but is still interesting.

Like I dunno, Hush. I actually don't know shit about him but from little I read, he looks interesting. Unless he's just a douche of a character and Dacon will tell me so.

Well, he cut Selina Kyle's heart out and made himself look just like Bruce Wayne so he could impersonate him.

So I'd say yeah, he's a douche :monster:

I quite liked the choice of villains in the first two Nolan batman movies, as they're actually quite believable to a degree. I mean Sackboy's just a dude with a sack over his head whose only 'superpower' is being a psychologist and some gas toxin, and the Joker's just nuts without any 'powarz' whatsoever.

I guess they could do the Joker too, as long as they stay away from the funky green outfits and big evil towers of d00m like they did in the 90's movies.
