From what I've read, there are definitely some mixed reactions. I'll give a rough translation of some of them from
buzz-plus.com/article/2019/05/10/ff7-remake-aerith-news
"The excitement for the release date is killing me! Aerith is mai waifu."
"They made Aerith really, really cute...so good..."
"Aerith's Cloud's waifu, and mai waifu too!"
"The lovely Aerith in the image makes me want to burst into tears even more!"
"Aerith's such a beauty! I'm looking forward to Tifa too! I can't wait to meet them!"
"Mai waifu Aerith is the most beautiful."
"Aerith's so cute, I want to play FF7R even more."
"I'm so glad that Aerith's so beautiful."
The comments on this article are a lot more negative, it seems (the title of the article translates to "Aerith being turned ugly turning into a hot topic") Just to cherrypick and translate a few comments...
blog.esuteru.com/archives/9312096.html
"No one has any cuteness."
”Why she looks too realistic is also puzzling"
"She was cute in Crisis Core..."
"Doesn't bother me."
”All these morons blurting 'uggo' feels strange."
"She got old lololol"
"What do you see that's ugly??"
"Overseas they hate cute girls. It;'s cause foreign games are smeared with amazon women. Aerith's much better."
"Not interested."
"I thought she was plenty cute tho..."
"Wicked surprised. Don't sully the memory of our FF7." << "Gross"
"I hope they correct her old-ass long face in the release version. Seeing her words and actions come from that face is too messed up, so make her a little cuter!"
"Where is the 'ugly'?? lololol. YOUR face is ugly. lololol."
etc. etc.
Just from taking the temperature of a lot of the comments, the main complaints seem to be the length of her face and that she looks like an "old lady." Keep in mind that most people seem to think her model is beautiful and people complaining she looks too old, or her face isn't round enough, are 萌えブタ (moe pigs). Most of the comments are on-board with her FF7R look.
I'm firmly in the "gorgeous" camp. I was smitten with her 20 years ago, and absolutely nothing has changed.
