Honestly, I'm not surprised. They're probably looking at the stylised way Ang Lee did The Hulk. Also, Seth Rogan's Green Hornet. Wright's style of filmmaking may not be what they want in a shared universe with the Avengers.

If it wasn't what they wanted, why would they have hired him and gave him over eight years to get the script and everything ready? =/

There must have been something else.

Disney took over :P

I think they go for writers or directors based on their name or perceived selling power, same with actors. But don't consider what the final product will be.

Look at Michael Arndt. He's a great writer, and I'm sure his Star Wars script was decent, but they decided to go a different direction. I probably happens more than we hear about.

Honestly, I still can't believe James Gunn got to do "Guardians of the Galaxy" (starring Chris Pratt at that) and keep looking for some last-minute "wait, hold the presses, we just watched it" announcement.

Here's James Gunn's comment on the whole thing:

Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they're amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn't it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren't meant to be together - not because there's anything wrong with either of them, but they just don't have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don't make each other happy. Although it's sad to see them split, when they do, you're surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.

It's easy to try to make one party "right" and another party "wrong" when a breakup happens, but it often isn't that simple. Or perhaps it's even more simple than that - not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn't mean they're not wonderful people.

And that's true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn't a person, but I think you get what I mean.

Indeed, Marvel isn't a person. I understand Marvel has a particular style, and if creative differences come out of that, I don't mind so much. It is all good, as long as Marvel (especially under Disney) isn't a profit-driven organisation that doesn't like taking risks. That's when movies all start to look the same... Oh, shi-.

@Ghost: There's a difference between consistency in style and homogenization. No reason to be sensationalist without any idea of what said creative differences were.

Reason to be sensationalist... rising? :awesome:... not that I was being so before, of course. Such a strong word, X-Soldier :(. Much hurt.

Hmm. Not sure how I feel about this. Local guy (he's from Raleigh; yeah, I know that's irrelevant), few directing credits to speak of, all romantic comedies (or just comedy in one case) and his first film, 14 years ago, was his best.

That said, that best film was "Bring It On," so ... yeah, while this won't be as interesting as whatever Edgar Wright would have done, it could be good.

I like the fact they literally hired a Yes Man director.
