She did and she was. Corneo's Mansion for example. Aerith came with Cloud to help save her. So yeah. Oh and also the gas chamber part. Although it was Barret and the others that saved her.

Give credit where credit is due, Saphire WEAPON saved her from the gas chamber. Considering this series' history regarding people surviving falls from stupidly high places, she'd have probably been fine jumping off the cannon even if Barret and company hadn't shown up with the Highwind

Honestly, I'm going to be honest and say that even though I'm a Cloti I actually like Aeris's character better than Tifa's.

And I get the kidnapping thing, but I think people are little oversensitive about it sometimes. That if a character is kidnapped at ALL they've been pigeonholed as a damsel in distress. First of all, Aerith was "kidnapped" willingly, in exhcange for Marlene's safetly. Secondly, as stated, that was the only time in the entire game she's kidnapped, so I don't understand how "SHE. WAS. ALWAYS. GETTING. FUCKING. KIDNAPPED." applies to Aerith in the least. Are you sure you're not confusing her with Peach?
Thirdly, you have to save a lot of characters in that game. Tifa is kind of rescued from Corneo. Red XIII is rescued from Hojo when Aerith is. Yuffie is rescued from Corneo. Cait Sith of all people has to rescue Barret from Scarlet. Cloud isn't kidnapped, but saved by Tifa all the same. Shera saves Cid's ass, etc. etc.

I mean, how demeaning to women can a game be in which all the male characters clearly want to be women?

One of the things I liked about FFVII was the team dynamic. Instead of The Hero and The Lancer saving everyone all the time, everyone saves everyone else all the time. Every single character gets into shit too deep for them to handle alone, and one or more of their team mates pull them out of it. Even those who don't seem to like each other much, like Barrett and Cait Sith.

Oh and @Force: I think it was in reference to my comment about people surviving stupidly high falls. Though in AC/C they tended to land on their feet most of the time. In a work of fiction landing on your feet makes all the difference.

On the subject of Yuna, at least remember the first time she got snatched by the Al Bhed she was in the process of busting herself out when you fight the boss. And she admits she hurt her captors "a little" to boot. Better than some damsels in distress I've seen.

Edit: Seriously, look at Peach from the Mario series as an example. Considering all the shit she can do, like floating and such, in games where she is playable... what's her excuse again?

Yes she does, and it was still annoying. Just saying, at least that one time she was in the process of escaping on her own when you rescue her. A lot of these damsel types don't even bother, they just sit and wait. I said it was better than some, not the best.

Well, I think Aerith only got kidnapped the one time, and I don't recall Garnet ever being kidnapped, uh, except for the time she specifically requested to be kidnapped for an awesome adventure.

And as mentioned earlier, Aerith willingly gave herself up to protect Marlene. She's stayed out of Shinra custody for a very long time at that point, its entirely possible she could have escaped again otherwise. So that too ranks as more badass than most kidnapping victims.

How many times did Yuna get kidnapped anyway? Once at Luca, once on the Shoopuf, once at the frozen lake, then when she's taken to Bevelle. Maybe one or two more times then I remember.

Garnet was captured at least once or twice too, she ended up in Kuja's and Brahne's captivity, at some point.

Still a rescue mission though. Just one of her own choosing. It's like rescuing Rinoa because of that stupid fucking plan she had.

Only Garnet wasn't stupid, and there was legitimate reason she thought she could talk sense into her mother.

There are some damsel in distress moments in games. Although I would argue that Tifa wasn't in distress during the Wall Market, it was more like, we need to find out what is going on, and her second rescue you actually play her as she is rescued, so to the player, it feels different than storming the castle to find the princess.

Aerith's damseling was a legit damsel in distress moment, but unlike Garnet and Rinoa, it was because she was self sacrificing. She wouldn't have gotten in that mess if it wasn't for Tifa asking her to save Aerith. But other than that she had a good head on her shoulders.

They all had "save the girl moments" although imo, I felt we Yuna and Rinoa were perpetually in a state of crisis compared to Garnet, Aerith, and Tifa.

But then she cuts her hair and all is forgiven.

I HATED how she didn't really change or grow as a character at all. (Granted she wasn't alive long enough in the game to develop but still...) Her personality remained completely static throughout the whole game and the Compilation.

Ignoring the kidnapping thing since that's already been discussed but... what? YMMV on her personality changing in the game itself (I think she had solid development of her own coming to terms with being a Cetra), but she behaves differently from CC to OGC to ACC.

Granted CC's change was kind of dumb with "scared of the sky", but.

imo, she did. She didn't change radically, but she was always tentative about her role as an Ancient. Towards the end she fully embraced it and her relationship with the planet.

I think I heard someone note that she actually stops calling herself Ancient and starts using the word Cetra when she starts becoming more comfortable with who she is.

This is one thing that I liked about Maiden, and about Aerith's character. I just like how Maiden explained it, how she really wanted to live with Cloud and the others, and take care of him. But she gave up her life for the planet because it's her duty, and no one else can do it but her. She is truly so selfless, and it makes me sad that she sacrificed so much. T^T Especially when she always wanted to be a normal girl.

I've always thought the view that Aerith sacrificed herself for the planet took away from the developers' intended theme of death's sudden and cruel nature. Emphasizing that theme, though, doesn't take anything away from Aerith herself.

She did sacrifice herself for the planet, of course -- just not deliberately. She wanted to throw Holy at Meteor, stop Sephiroth by herself, go home, and hopefully ride Cloud's cock, or at least share it with Tifa in a threesome.

She laid down her life for the planet, but in the sense that she put it on the line while refusing to allow anyone else to do so. She could have had other members of AVALANCHE go with her to the north and risk themselves as well, but she wouldn't do that.
