It's been a longtime since I last read this masterpiece. How often do Miura releases chapters lately?Hopefully not once a year. I might start re-reading it in case there isn't enough contents from the last chapter I read

Wait!!!Berserk had an anime (aside the first shitty one)?? I know there is a latest OVA on the Eclipse arc but I mean a real anime series??

Hmmm... okay, same style as the movies.

I'm not complaining. While it's obviously not as good as some other styles (a bit CG-heavy), it worked most of the time and I understand animating certain battles without it might be a tad expensive. If this is the price to pay for them to do a GOOD Berserk anime... it's a bargain I'm willing to accept.

Since it is going to be a TV anime I wonder how many cours it's going to be? If it's just going to be one cour (which is usually 12-13 episodes) I wonder how much of the manga they will adapt? If they are going to actually adapt the Black Swordsman Arc from the manga and not just the Conviction Arc, I could see one cour covering the entirety of the Black Swordsman Arc, plus the Lost Children Chapter of the Conviction Arc. With a second cour I could see them adapting the rest of the Conviction Arc. Also the unadapted bookend episodes of the Golden Age Arc will probably need an anime episode to establish Rickert, Godot, and Erica as characters and to show the Demon Child's origins. Anyways I can only hope it isn't a full CGI series like the Ajin: Demi-Human anime is. Also hope the channel it is broadcast on doesn't censor it (at least not too badly).

I've been watching this new Berserk anime, on episode 5 already. :monster: Which should tell you something.

I'll start with the cons:
The stupid CGI animation :wacky: It's the majority of the animation style for the characters and I dislike it. They did it a little during the movies they'd made about the Golden Age arc, but except for a bit in the beginning of the first movie, it was very rarely seen, and I was happy for that. I thought they learned their lesson.... but nope, the majority of this anime so far is all cgi animation.
Funnily enough, any flashback glimpses are normal anime style (though some are noticeably meh quality, while others might've been taken straight from the original anime). And there are a few pleasant moments with a normal anime style. Honestly if not for the cgi I'd really be impressed; when the character's are standing still the cgi isn't very noticeable and seems to borrow very well from Miura's art style. Has a nice hatching shading that gives it more of a 'manga come to life' feel.
But the cgi is just meh, I wish they hadn't gone that route.

As for any other meh moments, for some godforsaken reason, when women are topless, THEY DON'T SHOW NIPPLES. Oh sure they can show people being brutally tortured and cut in half and blood spewing etc etc etc, but women can't have nipples. :wacky: Are women aliens?
Okay I don't think the men have nipples either when topless, come to think of it... now I'll have to check. :monster: But it's just weird when a guy is playing with a woman's boobs and there's no nipples :closedmonster:

Now for the pros:
The music. OMFG, more Susumu Hirasawa please. His songs are made for Berserk, I just got a delicious sense of nostalgia from this one in particular. He also did the intro for the movies, I fucking love that song. They also brought back some songs from the original anime, like this one, which is great. So yes, thumbs up on the music. :monster:

The story seems pretty close to the manga; picks up basically where the movies left off. I'm pretty sure the first couple episodes covers the story a bit differently though, but I don't think it's much of a loss.
in the first 4 volumes of the manga(?) it covers the story of the slug-like apostle and his daughter iirc. Then it does the whole Golden Age and the past, then it continues in normal timeline and that's when we start up with the Holy See stuff.
So I'm liking the story, where it started is fairly accurate. It's exciting to see new stuff being animated, even if the animation isn't my cup of tea for the most part.

This is just making me want to watch the original and then the movies so badly. Will have to borrow it from my cousin (the original) and watch it sometime soon. :awesome:

My verdict is that it's worth watching. Despite my gripe about the meh cgi animation, it's hooked me. If you enjoyed the original anime and the movies, you'll most likely enjoy this; it continues the story so that's nice. I really am enjoying it. :D
Time to watch another episode :awesome:

They left out a bunch of things, like the whole Lost Children Arc (yikes).

As for any weirdness about women's bodies... they leave that for the Blu-Ray disks. Seriously.

^omg really? Blu-ray exclusive nipples? :wacky: That's just sad.

Is the Lost Children arc the one involving the Fairies?

^I'd forgotten when that happened, I assumed it was after this Holy See business. :O Then again I only read the manga once and that was probably 5 or more years ago...

I'm keeping up with the TV show; not a fan of the CGI either, especially when they're moving / turning and such it's just off. Seems a lot of filler too, but there was an episode not long ago that just had so much going on I found it hard to follow :monster:.

The protagonist is also the most boring character in there in season 2 it seems. And the rest is just there for comic relief :monster:

Oh also, wow the animation for the original series looks definitely kinda old, but it's soooo good (just saw some clips from it via youtube). I can't wait to rewatch it and the movies :awesome:

Okay I've just watched the newest episode, 24. Thoughts :reptar:

Welp, I've really enjoyed this season, and I think maybe more so than the first. :monster:
The main reason? It felt similar to the Golden Age of the Band of the Hawk in the original anime. Because Guts has finally found comrades again in his life, made very evident as season 2 progresses. He's no longer all alone (well, he has Puck, but...) Serpico and Farnese, his enemies for most of season 1, end up flipping around and joining him (Farnese actually has an enjoyable character progression, I think; her reasons for joining Guts are well done). Isidoro, of course, then Casca <3 And lastly Shierke and her fairy (Ivalera?)
I've ended up liking them all to some degree. Shierke is adorable and plays a pretty big part in this season, especially when she becomes the only one capable of bringing Guts back when he goes berserk from the new armor. And her crush on Guts is great. :awesome:

Idk it's awesome seeing Guts soften up again, and there's epic battles, and character progression, and comrades again finally. I was a big fan of the original Band of the Hawk's comrades and how they all bonded. This feels pretty similar.
The last scene in the final episode of the season really hit that home too, reminded me a lot of when the Band was dining in that inn, close to the height of their Golden Age (and maybe that's when Casca was in a dress, I forget).

Oh, and this new girl, Sonia. I like her. <3 Her story and such that she told Shierke on the docks was a nice summary of herself; I like the way the two bonded. I'm very interested in seeing where this goes, I mean Sonia obviously has a thing for Griffith (not just a crush but a lot of emotions for him, for good reasons, as her story highlights), Shierke has a thing for Guts, they're both very attached to both men. They're also 'different' and like no one else. It sort of mirrors Guts and Griffith when they first met... except this meeting had a lot less violence. :monster: There's some interesting parallels.
Wonder what they'll do when they realize that the men they care about hate each other and will likely end up battling to the death.
Likewise, what'll Guts and Griffith think of their special comrades being besties :awesome: probably nothing

Speaking of Griffith, he's got his human form back. yay :monster: I stopped reading the manga right around this point so, it's now basically all new stuff. And it's been so long I kinda forget some of it anyhow. So, I have no clue what he's going to do now. Seems like he's rescued Charlotte and now everyone wants him to finally marry her or something. I'd love to see more of his story and Sonia's. More characters to follow is a good thing, I think.
I always felt that, because Griffith was revived with that egg took in Gut's and Casca's disfigured child, that some of the child's feelings transferred to Griffith. It's just an idea, but iirc there were some moments with him in the manga on the hill near Godo's place, when he saw Casca and Guts again for the first time since the Eclipse (???). I'm pretty positive he had some thoughts about being unable to harm Casca at least or something?
Anyhow, I feel pretty convinced that he absorbed the child's love for it's parents. I feel like that's gonna affect him later on (if it hasn't already), making him have inner conflicts about things. At least i hope so :awesome:

The verdict, well, despite my initial meh feelings about the cgi, it's not so much a big deal anymore. The end of ep 24 with them in the inn was also delicious normal anime <3 The story of Berserk is getting better and better, and I'm really satisfied and happy with where it's going so far. I hope they continue to make more seasons. ^_^ Ep 24 was really, really good.

Oh, and before I forget, I love mr. skeletal horseman. :monster: That he had a close relationship with the forest witch lady was nice to see as well. Seems to be also a parallel to Shierke and Guts.

Oh, I watched a movie that was on Netflix; it fills in a lot of the storyline gaps in the modern anime, and the animation (even the 3d bits) is a LOT better / less annoying. Wish they put the other movie on there too... if it even exists.

I can't deal with the newer anime. I tried for one episode. It's just so... so bad.

I might try the movies again because I hear the look gets better. It's the same arc as the original anime though, so I think I'm gonna jump on the manga instead.

Kentaro Miura has said repeatedly before he wants to keep drawing/writing manga into his 90s/as long as possible. Even if his current pace stays the same/doesn’t increase and he keeps his health, he could easily continue well into his 70s. The series will eventually be finished for it’ll just likely take another decade or two to get there.
