Best RPGs for the PS3

Mine:

Nier

FFXIII (By default really, the game isn't on my top thirty list)

Mass Effect (Currently uncomplete, too lazy to pick it back up.)

Abortedj

The Crawling Chaos
AKA
Abortedj, The Offender, Abortedjesus, Testicules,
Well depends if you mean pure or hybrid.

Hybrid easily goes to Valkyria Chronicles. With an honorable mention to both Souls games (Demons and Dark).

Pure is a little harder. "Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch" does come to mind, as does Eternal Sonata.

VALKYRIA CHRONIC-

Oh wait, someone beat me :D. Yeah it's more like a tactical RPG and there's no "exploration" as such but it's a fantastic game.

VALKYRIA CHRONIC-

You are literally the only other person I know that ever mentions this game. Good to know that at least one other person played it.

Force likes it aswell, I had a discussion about it somewhere with him when I first played it. It might be somewhere in the "what games are you currently playing" thread, but it was a couple of years ago I'm sure.

I was playing (and enjoying!) it as well, then I got beaten during one of the battles, and it's not that I purposefully quit playing, I just had other games come up while I was taking a cool down break...I do want to get back to it though!

It really is annoying how little-known this game is though, it's one of the best on the PS3. I mean it's so old and unsupported that it doesn't even have trophy support. I think it's the only PS3 game I own that doesn't.

I remember going into a shop the week I bought my PS3 and looking at it in the preowned section. It was £2. I just looked at the cover, went "this looks Japanese-ey... I have some change, might as well" and I knew nothing about it. It was a month or so later that I actually played it and while it took me a little bit to get into it about a quarter of the way in I was just blown away. It's so much fun to experiment with different strategies and the art style is just beautiful.

Plus I like the music, the story and the characters which always helps :D.

Resonance of Fate is probably good, but every time I go back to it I forget how to work the battle system.

Haven't played Nier yet, but lol at that opening. Serah has a potty mouth.

Did someone say Nier? People complain about the gameplay and yeah it's not the best, but dem characters, dat plot. Yes. It's one of those games after you put your controller down in the end (after multiple endings) you are like, "damn."

I liked XIII, and XIII-2. XIII-2 is superior if you consider just the RPG elements, ie some amount of choice, non linearity, and exploration, but I liked XIII better because of the story (for those of us who could actually understand the story).

Ni No Kuni was a gem too. Getting my "gotta catch them all" stuff with a side of ghibli is always nice.

That's all I could remember. I've been realizing more and more that I just haven't been playing lots of JRPGs at all. I played Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata, but not a lot of it, they just didn't hold my interest, although they might be more traditional JRPG in more ways than a lot of games.

As far as WRPGS, I can only think of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both of which are a great series. I like their story centric-ness because other WRPGs, they tend to overwhelm me while not giving me the character/story focus that I tend to like more. Like Kingdoms of Amalur, although to be fair I game that game almost no time even though I meant too.

Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate look interesting.

I'll see if the US PSN has demos of them since I don't believe the UK one does.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch just doesn't look visually interesting to me.

I don't play games for gameplay. I'm weird like that.

Valkyria Chronicles.
I guess we're not hipsters.
But since anything remotely embodying the standard characteristics of the JRPG genre were almost completely nonexistent (at least in the west) by the time the PS3 and 360 came out, this one stands out. Regardless, this is a very fun and engaging game, and one of the best titles on the system I'd say.

I'll probably give Nier a try despite the negative things I've heard about the gameplay. Also, Revy's voice from Black Lagoon in the trailer was what really got my attention initially.

Wholeheartedly approve of the Valkyria Chronicles love.

Nier is fun but I keep getting distracted before I can finish it.

I just finished Tales of Xillia. It was my first Tales game and I definitely recommend it.

And while its not the best, since no one else has mentioned it I'll pay some lip service to Folklore, probably the first RPG I got for my ps3. Its basically pokemon meets zelda. It forces you to go through every dungeon twice (with the other character) which is the biggest flaw. But the murder mystery plot is fun and it has hands-down the best, most satisfying use of the sixaxis: ripping the souls out of defeated enemies.
And Irish accents are fun :monster:

Resonance of Fate is good! It's a bit odd, though, and I believe that for you to like it, you need to be into the music style, background setting and character style too.

Fortunately for me, I love the three of them so...

Oh the music's fantastic. Watch the title screen and opening cutscene, that's when it really grabbed me.

I also like the guns as main weapon of choice in an JRPG over swords for a change. I know that sounds weird because there's a billion shooters out there.

I'm playing that for the first time right now. It's a crime really, Mass Effect is probably my favourite trilogy ever (my love for Mass Effect is on par with my love for FF) and its taken me this long to get into Dragon Age.

Dragon Age has great characters, great music and a great story. But it's a game that should be played on PC IMO. It's really laggy and downright slow and at times really annoying on PS3, the game basically freezes for 3-5 seconds every single time you want to talk to someone. And don't get me started on the fucking inventory system. I should not have to press a button to check the stats of every single item I have. I should not have to spend half an hour every hour or so selling shit just to make space in my inventory so that I can pick up more useless crap to sell. Limited inventories really piss me off.

I basically just hate the menus with a fiery passion, the rest of the game is fine :monster:

You can also pull the camera the whole way back on PC for combat. Its garbage on consoles. And the fact that the second was dumbed such that its garbage on PC was not a fix.

Oh dear no, I'd never do that weird birds eye view camera thing PC people do in MMO's. But it's a feature the game should have on the console anyway, considering FFXIV does it with absolutely no issues.

Well I wouldn't do it in an mmo... (though i do pull back in XIV's boss fights so I don't miss red areas) but when controlling a whole party baldur's gate style? Yes.

I went into a couple of used game shops to look for Valkyria Chronicles today (and a few other things) after seeing all the recommendations in this thread. Couldn't find it, though. I wonder how rare it is?

It didn't sell too well outside of Japan initially. Tbh I don't think it was marketed at all in the west (even on the internet), I hadn't even heard of it when I picked it up.

We have one at home :awesome: thanks to my brother who can be sometimes a douchebag but on other times he can be quite good. And he still has good taste with games (game is his).

I know I'll play it at some point.
