The water was obviously an addition that was forced onto the game / movie by Christian fundamentalist lobbyists. I mean, a church? Kids getting baptised? Seph looking like a ghey version of Jesus? Angel statue? One-winged Angel? Halo above Seph's head in ACC's final battle? Aerith praying?
I tell you, Christian fundies. Geostigma is Satan's corruption caused by the sins of the fathers and whonot, and baptising cures it.
Of course, everyone knows Satan wins in the end,

I honestly didn't see any parallelism between ACC and Christianity. Even now, I don't really think so (Not even counting the use of Latin in FFVII).

I think Geostigma and Jenova cells are different, though - having Jenova cells is not an automatic death sentence via Geostigma, though Geostigma does mean one has come into Jenova cells.
Cloud had Jenova cells within him for years, and for the most part - he was fine. (True, if you can call creating a whole fake identy to survive while his own mind mended itself, and he could find himself 'fine'.) In this, I think Cloud still has his intitial Jenova information; saying this, it's not because I think he can't be anything without those cells.
I say it because there perhaps was something missing in how Cloud received his cells, when, where, what, etc. and how the sufferers of Geostigma received theirs. It's now said that Cloud developed Geostigma via Denzel; so Cloud's development came through interaction with another's infection - perhaps it's not the Jenova cells in Cloud's case, but Denzel's part that Cloud contracted?
In other words - Cloud was 'the successful Clone' of Sephiroth - he could retain himself (after a while and a lot of help from friends) while also harboring Jenova's genetic information inside of his own.
EDIT: Also, Great Gospel got rid of status effects and then made those blessed temporarily invincible, as well as healing them totally - MP and HP. In this, it took care of the effect, not the one who affected... So, I don't think all of Jenova's being would be affected by the healing rains. I don't believe Great Gospel would bother Sephiroth, proper, though it did bother his remnants.
Lastly, Jenova is still out there, because of Genesis; we're really not sure if the story is done with Sephiroth. Cloud still harbors his own genetic information from Jenova (though, being as if we should take Crisis Core - that he received that information via Sephiroth's genetic information, or the original game, that he was given cells directly from Jenova, is up in the air to me.) I think the game will in some way forever surround the 'Calamity from the Skies' and his/her/it's unwilling brood/incarnations.
... I know, I theorize and philosophize way too much. I hope you got all that.
Second EDIT: I was hoping to get the novel from CDJapan, but when I was ready to put in the order, they were out of it! You know guys, could you please save some for others who may also wish to purchase...?!

The difference between Geostigma & Jenova cells is circumstantial. After FFVII, Jenova cells are now widespread, infecting the entire population, instead of a limited to SOLDIER. For Sephiroth to subjugate the planet and achieve his plans, he takes advantage of the numbers by attacking the infected, and gathering their tainted spirit energy.

Since Sephiroth uses Watashi in AC/ACC, I wonder if there's a reason for this or is it just a minor screw up?

Watashi is the standard and formal way of addressing oneself. Used by both genders.
Ore is mostly just used in speech, a less polite/formal way, used mostly by guys.
Sephiroth used ore before he went batshit insane at Nibelheim. After that he changed to watashi to probably fit in better with his whole acension to godhood thing. Ore is a bit too personal and not epic enough for something like that.

Hitoshura is going through translating and reading the novel. And I can tell you Sephiroth's is very interesting.
Hitoshura has the first part of Sephiroth's "Lifestream Black" section done, but he doesn't want to show it off since its rough and he wants to proofread it.
The next part talks about his creation of Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo.
Also, he started a bit of Case of Nanaki.
The reason why he is so obsessed with Cloud is not just out of a sense of pride and hate. But it's his point of focus to keep himself whole. Let me explain.
The lifestream is erroding at his memories, experiences, feelings and emotions. He knows how it works and how its trying to pull him into the collective and break him down.
In order to save himself from diffusing into the Lifestream, Sephiroth has to have a core to focus his strong will that will keep him unique and a separate entity. And the only thing he can focus on that's strong enough within him and his experiences, is his hatred. His hatred for Cloud and desire for revenge. In a sick sort of way, Cloud is the one who's keeping him whole now that he's dead and in the lifestream.
