MAXIMUM GAME
I LOVE THIS GAME.
I was so skeptical and worried about the quality of this game, and I'm so glad I was wrong. This is Crysis repackaged, re-purposed, and re imagined with all the awesomeness of the original present.
The game starts off slow(I assume to help players get accustomed to the controls, which can feel clunky when you're not used to them), but as it progresses it just gets more and more awesome. The areas open up more, and the versatility of your nanosuit and weapons improve greatly.
The nanosuit has been a bit streamlined to make use of its various abilities less of a hassle on consoles, and thus speed mode and power mode are activated automatically when you sprint or melee, the power modes each being charged for maximum use when you jump or melee. It's pretty fun to falcon punch a soldier into a wall imo. Armor and Camo are the only two modes mapped to buttons, and honestly I'm ok with this more than I thought I'd be. Unless you want to just fuck everything up in sight with your arsenal, you will be using a lot of "CLOAK ENGAGED".
You can pick up an upgrade for each suit mode by killing certain enemies in the game, each upgrade is mapped to one of your fingers.
Much like the first game you can customize your weapons with the various attachments you pick up on the fly, which makes attaching silencers, laser sights, and the several scopes you find a breeze. You'll find yourself doing this often when you want to switch from stealth combat to full on rambo.
The AI sure as shit isn't going to make it easy for you one way or the other. You face one of two different kinds of enemies, sometimes both at the same time. Crynet soldiers come in a few flavors, which you'll be familiar with. You have your shock troopers, assault troops, snipers and grenadiers as you'd expect.
Then there's the Ceph. Something that was a secret of a sort in the first game is back in a big way. Their presence is pivotal in this game, and thus they've been given an upgrade. Unlike the floating arsenals of the first game, the Ceph now have bipedal armor suits(looking a bit reminiscent of the bayformers) that endow them with much more threatening capabilities. These motherfuckers man. These things will drive you up the wall, literally sometimes. These things are smart, fast, and powerful. They are more alert than your human foes, faster, and agile. They will switch between hopping around the map dodging your shots and climbing walls, to rushing you and trying to bludgeon you to death with their appendages.
More often than not stealth is the best option with these guys, have a care, they are much more alert than the Crynet soldiers. You have the grunts, the bruisers, and the giant motherfuckers. You don't want to fuck with the bruisers and giant motherfuckers without some serious artillery.
Let's not overlook the aesthetic side of the game however. Because it is substantial. This game is gorgeous. It features some the best lighting, level design, and art design I've seen in a game. Don't let fanboys fool you, this game looks just as good vaunted exclusives like Killzone 3, if not better. The fact that this game achieves all this goodness while doing it real-time without any prebaked lighting or shadowing is incredibly impressive. The game suffers from only minor framerate hiccups, which don't affect gameplay much at all.
Some areas in particular are very beautiful. I was worried that it'd look just like any other bleached bloomed shooter after the setting was changed from the tropical island, but some areas which combine vegetation with the artificial are truly breathtaking, rivaling that of the island at times.
The game features an AMAZING soundtrack by the way, which surprised the hell out of me. The first game had good music, but this one blows it out of the water.
The gun sounds, reload animations, and modeling are particularly impressive. The shotgun stands out in particular for me with a badass reload animation, and the sound of the blast is just so powerful I never fail to get a kick out of it.
Now, I've seen some complaints about story in a few reviews. Honestly, it's no worse than your big name action games, and is serviceable in getting you where you need to be with sufficient urgency. This game will through you into some crazy setpieces featuring destruction and explosions much like those you'd see in a hollywood disaster film, I imagine X-Soldier will enjoy this part a great deal. It's a great sci-fi romp through a disasterfied New york that should entertain all but the most pretentious of us.
If you're looking for an FPS with a wealth of tactical options allowing you to tackle most situations however you'd like, a shooter where thinking is paramount to success, then you should give this a try. I myself have been playing on Soldier. Prior to playing the game I'd heard normal was noob mode, and I just wasn't having that.
Reports have stated that while the Xbox 360 version has a higher overrall framerate and supposedly better lighting and load times, the PS3 version holds up just as will with a more stable framerate. So you should be fine with either option if you so choose to purchase this game. Adri will be happy to know that the game is quite lengthy as well, I've played about 7 hours so far and reviews claim it's about 13 hours long, but it seems like I've been playing longer.
Since this thread has so far consisted of nothing but me gushing and droning, here's a bit of pretty for you:
Here's some trailers for good measure:
