It's pretty unsettling how much Disney owns - and how much, in terms of media outlets, is owned by such a small number of companies, in general. Looks like Disney is really planning on going toe-to-toe with Netflix in streaming.

Is it bad that I'm kinda happy at a chance for Buffy to come back to a streaming service because of this?

If it just means Netflix and Disney-Fox-Marvel-Lucas for 30 bucks a month, I can live with this.

Aren't Buffy and Angel both of Netflix? Unless you mean a reboot series on a streaming service. I honestly wouldn't mind a Disney XD animated series ala Motorcity or something.

Buffy/ Angel aren't on Netflix US or Netflix UK anymore, not sure about Canada. Sucks major balls.

Disney has purchased odd things in the past. Mirmiax/Dimensions for example. Yes, that actually means that Hellraiser and Children of the Corn were indeed at one point Disney IP's. They have a lot of subsidiaries, ranging from Buena Vista to Touchstone, and they're careful with how they integrate brands.

So the only real major thing that I see here is now they can make their own X-men films in line with the Marvel Universe if they choose. Anything else will still probably still have the Fox logo attached. They OWN that name now, and that name has power. People associate with it, and Disney will keep that integrity intact.

Technically Buena Vista is only a division and Touchstone Pictures is only a label of The Walt Disney Company. That means that both of them are owned and directly controlled by The Walt Disney Company with Touchstone in effect being a brand. Miramax and its former label Dimension Films was a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. Owned by and answering to Disney but run by its own executives and board. Basically Miramax was a company within The Walt Disney Company.

Touchstone Pictures movies are essentially made by the core Walt Disney Company under the Touchstone label/brand. While Miramax movies, from 1993 to 2010 and Dimension Films movies, from 1993 to 2005 were made by Miramax, with the Dimension Films movies made under the Dimension label/brand on behalf of The Walt Disney Company.

Touchstone Pictures movies: Unbreakable, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pretty Woman, Coyote Ugly, Sweet Home Alabama, Bicentennial Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Dead Poet's Society, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Beaches, Splash, Dick Tracy, Turner and Hooch, What About Bob?, The Prestige, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, Ruthless People, The Ref, Con Air and Good Morning, Vietnam

Disney era Miramax movies: The Magdalene Sisters, Shakespeare in Love, Clerks, Good Will Hunting, Gangs of New York, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill vol. I & II, The English Patient and Ella Enchanted

Disney era Dimension Films movies: Mother's Boys, eXistenZ, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, The Faculty, Phantoms, the first three Scream movies, Bad Santa, the first three Spy Kids movies, From Dusk till Dawn and sequels, The Crow and Frank Miller's Sin City

I pretty much expect Fox to end up as a subsidiary.

Okay important question time

So if Disney basically owns the Fantastic Four now

Could this mean

We'll get to see Spider-Man interact with them outside of the comics? Because his relationship with the F4 is one of my favorite things. He's like an honorary member of the family and I've just always thought it was really sweet. <3

And I ship him with love his friendship with the Human Torch. :awesome:

Joss's star has wained a little in light of allegations, so I'm not sure Disney would be prepared to bring him back to continue that franchise.

Ah shit, I can't believe I only just heard about this. :( There are already essays popping up casting new lights on all his projects ... I just can't ... :(

As much as I respect Joss Whedon's work in general, the news wasn't super surprising (though no less disappointing) to me because I've been unable to reconcile what happened to Cordelia's character on Angel with Joss The Super Feminist since I first watched Angel. And that was before even finding out about the bullshit treatment of Charisma Carpenter behind the scenes.

forever bitter

Yeah, that was without a doubt such a horrible thing to do to the character, and it made it even worse when I begun to hear rumblings about what happened to Charisma.

I usually tend to not read and avoid any behind-the-scenes details, for the very fear of tarnishing what I love. His catalogue of shows have meant a lot to me, and like it or not, this is going to have an impact on subsequent rewatches.

So Anastasia is technically now a Disney Princess?

I think it's like an Amity Islander thing. If you're not born there, you ain't an islander.

I tend to go by that standard too. Female Disney protagonists qualify as Disney princesses in my book, so long as their film debut was released by Disney proper or a subsidiary of Disney at the time. By that standard Shelly Webster of The Crow, Kate Fuller of From Dusk Till Dawn, Vivian Ward of Pretty Woman, the 2002 film versions of Velma Kelly and Roxie Heart of Chicago, Sidney Prescott of the Scream franchise, Beatrix Kiddo of Kill Bill and finally, for now at least, Mia Wallace and Fabienne of Pulp Fiction are more fitting of the title of Disney princess than 20th Century Fox's Anastasia.

*feels like he dodged a bullet by never being particularly invested in Joss Whedon stuff*

Normally I'd be inclined to VEHEMENTLY DISAGREE because I still rewatch Buffy, Angel and Firefly to this very day and would recommend that most people do so, but yeah I can kind of see that line of thinking these days. It's a shame. The Buffyverse as a contributor to the landscape of serialised television is second to none but it definitely had some glaring cracks in the veneer and now those cracks are slowly being filled with poison. The poison being both the stuff about Whedon and a modern perspective.

(might be better to move this discussion to the buffyverse thread if anyone wants to continue it)

But yeah to continue this derail for a hot minute, it's really hard to go back and watch some of the classic shows without grimacing at how out of touch they are with current social issues. The Buffyverse shows aren't anywhere near as bad as say, "Friends", but they still have some moments that are a hallmark of their time, even though Buffy was a show that broke ground for being progressive.
