I can imagine the loss of a loved one while you were away trying to save their daughter, and the missed opportunity of knowing your son, would make all the accomplishments of your life fail in comparison.
It's about perspective and importance.
That's true, but in his own perspective and what we see, it very much seems like Laguna came to terms with it. To some people that would break them, but Laguna seems to have took it as it came and kept on going. He definitely didn't give the impression of being a broken man or anything.
Even the narrative itself through Selphie's entries thing gave the impression that, as Dacon said, Laguna lived the life that most people only can dream about. He touched a lot of lives (even Seifer of all people. Where do you think he got his battle stance from?), and many people who he only met once, decades ago, remember the guy.
The game itself and everyone in it gives the impression that he had a hell of a life. Bad shit happened, but still, it was all right in the end (as the ending seems to show).
Honestly Laguna is one of my, if not my favorite, characters in the series.
