Why? He especially didn't look it in FF7.

Rude definitely struck me (and everyone else I knew) as a black guy in FF7. A light skinned black guy, but a black guy. I know quite a few people, relatives even, fuck, my father, who could easily pull off the Rufus if they shaved their head (which my dad had for a while) and rocked his shades.

I can see him being Hispanic as well, though, especially if that's what he was canonically modeled after.

^To be fair, Rude is far more bald than that. :monster:

As for Nomura saying Rude was hispanic, does that really count in saying that is what he is in-game?

It has always bothered me when people use real world terms and phrases in a non-Earth world. Like in FFVIII that one woman that Laguna loves (Rain?) says, "Speak English, please." English? Really? England exists in the world of FFVIII?

Then in X-2, someone refers to Machina being "Kosher as a pickle." I didn't realize people in Spira could be Jewish, since you were either a Yevonite or an outcast/Al Bhed.

I don't know, I just like things to be separate, or at least have a reason to be called what they are. If it exists IRL but doesn't in the fantasy/fake world then don't use it/say it. :/

But that's just me. :P

Emma, I find in that case that the Tolkien Conceit helps. 'It's a [nearly] perfect translation from Their language to ours. How? Who knows. It just is.''

As for Rude and/or Barret being darker skin than normal, this is technically a perfectly valid statement, as 'normal' is defined by the majority of samples, and dark skin IS an outlier in FFs. Only the Dwarves of FFIV and the Viera are the populous dark skinned peoples in FFs. Now, in our world, there is no 'normal' save except perhaps for an averaged or mean skin tone, which would be somewhere around the hispanic or arabic range.

But yes, that's definitely enough of the race raging.

Why? He's just a guy with a bald head, shades and some facial hair.

He doesn't even particularly have dark skin. In the original he could have easily passed for a white guy.

I just wonder why everyone defaults him to a black guy. Even I thought the same before.

I dunno. It's hard to say why a certain person has a certain impression on you. I'm just sayin'.

I'm playing through FFVII right now and the first thing I'd think of if I was describing Rude's physical appearance would be 'black guy', or 'light skinned black guy' to be more specific. He just looks like he would be a black guy to me. Can't explain why.

Not when it comes to physical appearance.

He could easily be a white guy with a light tan, hispanic, or Hawaiian though.

I am only speaking for myself. I don't know what to tell you, man.

He could be. I'm not saying he can't be any of those things. My mind just defaults to 'black', though. Like I said, I don't really know why and that's kinda that as far as I'm concerned. I understand that Nomura stated that the closest real world analogue for Rude would be Hispanic, and that's fine and I accept that (and I can visibly see the influence), but my mind sees him as 'black' as well, first and foremost.

I don't know what to tell you, dude.

I just don't get the why of it. There's gotta be something that ticks in people's heads.

Is it the silent reserved warrior persona that had been regulated to so many african american characters that Rude possessed? I'm just curious.

Conditioning. Media shows us a lot more of the bald head, stoic faced bouncer-esque character being black than Hispanic.

It could also be our medium. I would wager a guess that hispanics/S.Americans pop up with a lot less frequency than other minorities represented in games. Certainly more than whites/asians. And more than black characters. Even when they've shown up, we've got to rely on names and stereotypes rather than visual cues (ie. Carlos from RE, you couldn't guess what he was from a character model).

People perceive race oddly based on what they are use to. Like, I'm half Korean, but I look white so no one bothers to question me. My brother, however, doesn't, but gets different guesses depending where he is. When we lived in Korea, people thought he was part Filipino. When we went to America, people guessed part Hispanic.

It's just the way people are exposed.

I agree with that wholeheartedly, Tennyo. It just sounds awkward when they usue typical RL expressions in their universe. It seems completely out of place. I could mention a few ones in Spanish, specially in FFVIII, for some strange reason.

A couple of quick examples? Selphie singing a Spanish children song when she's at the lunar base, and someone using a Spanish expression, which translated would read as "to be in the moon of Valencia". It means someone's so distracted he doesn't even pay attention to their surrounding. So yeah, I was left with a stupid look on my face, as I failed to imagine those characters mentioning a city in my country.

I blame the translators who are not as purists as we are :awesome:

Not going to tolerate mindless comments if I feel like it. Your welcome to do the same.

I know this spat is a few days old now, but holy crap.

I'm going on the record now with this suggestion for everyone: In the future, unless someone is an established dickhead, assume that they are not serious if your first reaction to something they've said is an intense feeling of racial offense.

Generalizing a group of people is not a point, funny, witty, or classy in anyway.

I'd say most things that are funny, witty and classy involve generalizing groups of people. :monster:

Because you all act like dicks. =/

You know what? It's not the first damn time I've seen something racist like that said. I don't care if it was a 'joke' it's the hundreth fucking time. I don't have to tolerate it, if I don't want to, and to be honest I did nothing serious in retaliation until they got extremely defensive.

This place is just a very unwelcoming forum in general. You wonder why you get no new members? Stop acting this way and maybe more people will want to be around this place.

Whatever, your all just going to laugh and giggle and thank eachothers posts and reassure eachother how right you all are so fuck it. It's not even worth discussing like adults because, to be rather frank, that shit ain't gonna happen.

Jesus Christ, go play on the 4kids forum if you can't handle *GASP* politically incorrect humor.

Next thing you know, someone's gonna pitch a bitch fit over their birthday being forgotten or something.

My birthday's been forgotten twice. Hell, my entire several-month absence wasn't mentioned. Does this bother me? No. It's tempted me to plot your deaths, but it doesn't bother me.

I agree with ShuShu though. Racist humor is simply that - racist. And the attitude that "if you can't handle it then gtfo" is precisely why, as ShuShu said, the place has a bad rep.

And you wonder why your membership is down.

Actually, we were wondering where you were in the Staff Forum and then X-SOLDIER showed us you were posting on the Starcraft forum thanks to Starcraft 2 coming out, and thus the answer was solved.

He predicted you'd come back once some new FF stuff came out, and low and behold he was right. :monster:
