An Interview with Battle Director Takeo Kujiraoka
Laguna's Battle Concept and Tricky Abilities
"Please tell us about Laguna's battle concept."
Kujiraoka: His concept is Tactical Gunner. In his original game, Laguna
only used a machine gun, but now he has all kinds of firearms. As a gun
fighter, he's a character that specializes in mid- to long-range combat.
Again, Laguna has lots of attacks that depend on how long you hold the
attack button and different bullet types, so he is indeed a character with
many tricky attacks. Laguna's style is to strategically choose his
attacks to counter his opponents. Because of this, he stands out among
the easy-to-play Cosmos Warriors, and is more of a tactical experience
along the lines of The Emperor and Cefca. But of course, he will be handled
like the rest of the Cosmos Warriors.
"So it's all about how long you press the attack button, huh?"
Kujiraoka: Well, when you're using the machine gun with quick taps of the
attack button, you'll be able to move around with the analog stick and play
like it's a third-person shooter. Normal presses pull out the shotgun,
which has a wide range on its buckshots, but unless it is used point blank,
you won't hit for maximum damage. However, if used point blank, not only
will you score more hits, but it will crush the opponent's guard as well.
"So you can manually aim the sights of the rifle?"
Kujiraoka: When you use a skill that involves the rifle, after the
animation of pulling it out, you can use the analog stick to aim with the
crosshair. The rocket launcher can be manually aimed the same way. The rocket
launcher's missiles are homing, though, so you can just aim in the general
direction of the enemy.
"Are there any other notable abilities?"
Kujiraoka: When throwing a hand grenade, the number of presses will
determine how far it will fly. If you don't calculate the distance right,
you'll miss your target completely. If you aren't good at predicting your
opponent, you can just use the default throw distance. There is also merit
in that method. Hand grenades can also be used as a close-range, constant
bomb attack.
"What is Laguna's EX Burst?"
Kujiraoka: Just like the Desperado in his original game, Laguna swings in
on a rope. It then plays out like a third-person shooter where you score
more hits the longer you keep the crosshairs on your opponent. This time
around, we were able to make it a much flashier attack.
Extra Tidbit: Laguna's EX Mode is so strong that his weapons sparkle with
a golden glow!? "The gold sparks in his EX Mode is powerful, but where does
it come from? Is it the power of Ms. Fairy? The perks of being a president?
Actually, when he activates his EX Mode, the caption says "Ms. Fairy is
here!" LOL. You can really see the love the staff has for the original
games with details like this.
Does anyone know what this Ms. Fairy thing is? I consider myself a pretty big FF buff and had caught all the references made in Dissidia, but this one isn't ringing any bells. Anyone wanna help me out here? =P
