District 9

On a side note, going to see it again in about an hour. One of the few movies I've seen twice in theatres, and the only one I've seen again the next day.

Great movie, one of my favorites of all time. One thing I particularly liked about the movie was the fact that nobody was a truly textbook hero. I mean, seriously, the main character was just as much of an asshole as everybody else at the beginning of the film.

On a lower note, the aliens WERE kinda depicted as naiive and untilligent, except for Charlie and his son. This all put a little damper on the theme of segregation in the movie.

Good film, very realistic portrayals of the protagonists and antagonists and over all a good story.

alien's name is Christopher Johnson. and his boy's name's little CJ. least that's what most sauces say.

Holy shit this was an awesome movie.

I don't get the gore complaints, it's not really any gory than anything else I've seen in theaters. The gore made it a little more realistic anyway, combat is always gory and horrific on a real battlefield.

The film did remind me a little of Resistance with the
main character becoming an alien half breed and getting special abilities for it

Goddamn, Microsoft is really going to regret snubbing Blokamp and Jackson like that. Seriously, this is one of the best films I've seen in years.

I can't wait to see what Blokamp does next.

I don't think it's much of a complaint as it is more a fair warning. The very fact that it was filmed to appear more realistic (at times) and coupled with such serious social statements is what made the gore seem more believable. Generally, in films - in my experience, anyway - the reason I'm not as put off by some gore is because I know it's not real. I'm not saying District 9 is any more real or plausible, but that's just the way it was supposed to be.

You're right, though. The gore technically wasn't any worse than the next film.

Why do people keep going to PG-13-R movies expecting them to be kiddie movies?

The reasons for this keep escaping me.

That's also something that dawned on me. I leaned over to my friend about ten minutes into the movie to say, "Isn't this rated R?" There were children no older than 9 years old in that theater. And they're being exposed to such filth as
inter-species anal sex doggy style!

Many parents are idiots. What else is new?

And yet these are almost invariably the same faggots who bawwwww endlessly about Grand Theft Auto games.

It's beyond that man. These people are just outright ignoring what they see right in front of them.

Americans in general seem far too faint of heart, imho. The censorship because of all that is pretty much excessive, imho :monster:.

On here, we get 'fuck this, fuck that' all the time on TV and such. And there's a popular pop song that's pretty much made out of that one, making 'fuck you' cute and girly and shit.

Same goes for titties and nudity, btw. Back in the eighties and early nineties, you'd still see boobs in American movies - and in the early eighties and possibly seventies (the latter I haven't seen much movies from), you'd even get full frontal nudity at times (although the only example I can name is the 1984 version if 1984, :monster: ). But lately, there's been very little, especially in mainstream movies. It's all chaste and PG-13 or for all ages, :monster:.

Well I just got back from the movie. I'll put my review behind a spoiler cut.

Well I wouldn't say it was perfect but I did enjoy it. It really makes you hate yourself though :( Lousy humans.
It was such a different take on aliens coming here. Usually they're just good or bad... I don't think they're ever been victimized before. So good job on a unique take, that's for sure.

The beginning was a little creepy with the nose bleeds and the fingernails and the vomiting... but what can you do? That stuff doesn't really bother me, but it's not like I really want to see it either.

I was a little bored at first, but once Wikis met Chris the movie seemed to pick up a lot. The whole time I was watching I was so afraid they'd kill Chris and do this dramatic "You must save my son!" thing. I was really glad they didn't. Also I was pissed as hell at Wikis for almost betraying Chris but I'm glad that worked out.

You pretty much knew Wikis was going to side with the aliens after the interviews in the beginning, but it was still pretty neat.

Then there was a lot of people exploding and for some reason that never gets old :monster:

At one point I remember thinking that I didn't want them to kill Wikis, but if they did, I honestly just wanted Chris and his son to survive... guess I got that :joy: I kinda wished more of the aliens escaped though.

I also didn't make the connection in the beginning with the thing falling out of the ship being what they were trying to fix underground. Then it was like OH I get it, that WAS important.

I don't usually like movies that leave a lot of things unresolved but... well I think it's pretty obvious what's going to happen next. I kinda wish there had been a timeline to show how long it had been since the mother ship left. ... or was there?

It's also interesting how a lot of the stuff isn't explained and it just is. There's no explanation as to how the aliens and humans communicate, just that they know each others language... how long did it take to learn? And where did the ship come from anyway? How'd they get themselves into that mess?... it's funny but I didn't think of any of that until the movie was over... and truthfully, I don't really care :monster:

So yeah, good movie, do go see it if you got the time... and yeah WTF is up with all the little kids in the theater O_o I have to agree with that.

Oh and at first I was afraid the camera was going to be shaky throughout the movie, I was really glad this turned out not to be true.

Also 7 previews and only one remotely looked interesting... when did 7 previews become normal? Didn't it just used to be like 3?

A lot of the stuff that wasn't explained also wasn't really important to the social commentary or the progression of the plot. In fact, I'm glad a lot of it wasn't explained; sometimes explaining too much demystifies something that would otherwise be incredibly awesome (Exhibit A: Midichlorians) or just detracts from the pace of the film.

I think the film stands nicely on its own but it definitely does have good sequel potential, providing that they handle it correctly. Here's hoping it doesn't turn into something like the Matrix sequels.

The sequel is Independence day OMGOMGOMG!

and yeah it wasn't explained but.. I didn't think of it until later and it's like, "Hmm I guess it doesn't matter."

Also did anyone else think they used fuck too much?

No more than what's common in R films. It just annoyed me a bit since their accents made them sound like they kept saying FOOK FOOK.

Bottom line: if you're a fan of Mystery Science Theater, I'd say you lost out if you didn't see it.

What's that got to do with this movie though?

I heard in a review that the director said he'd want to visit the world again... but I dunno, I think a sequel isn't such a good idea. I mean as I said I think it's pretty obvious what happens after the end, if they ruin that or have to spoon feed us that, I just think it'd really ruin a lot of the movie.
