Cloud outright tells tifa he joined the army to impress her, and that he could be happy as long as she's with him.

None of that in DMC. None.

I'm not taking sides as to whether there's a relationship between Dante and Trish, as I've never played any DMC game, but I'm just going to note that you shifted the goalposts. Your original statement was "There's not even a kiss...no sort of intimacy past looking at each other." Final Fantasy VII doesn't demonstrate a kiss between Cloud and Tifa anywhere either; the only affection shown between them is indicated verbally and with fadeouts. Others have already argued that various lines between Dante and Trish can be interpreted in a similar manner, so it is now incumbent upon you to prove that they are not similar. Admittedly there is presumably no fadeout implying that sex happens after any of these lines, and I have no idea whether any of them have similar statements by their creators backing them up as indicating romance, but your initial statement was that DMC doesn't show anything.

One scene with an outright, blatant "Hey, we're together" pairing. It's not in the game. By the logic you've put forth, Cloud isn't meant to be with either of them romantically.

DMC doesn't show anything, that's in regards to statements and intimacy man.

The comparisons don't work. In FF7 they show their feelings for each other, in DMC they don't. They don't talk about having feelings for each other, so the next step would be for them to show some kind of romantic affection through physical contact, which they don't.

Actually Meg, it's been stated from the creators themselves that you should be able to SEE which pairing is canon. Cloud is meant to be with someone, they're just not clear about to whom Cloud pairs up with. Mutual feelings doesn't reveal enough?
