I'm probably gonna sit back and re-watch the episode in a little bit to sort out my feelings on everything in it.

I am indifferent to Oswin.
One of the things I liked about Dr Who was that the companions were real people (with big noses, wonky teeth etc...) and not just generically pretty eye-candy. Rose, Martha, Donna in their different ways were all great. But now everybody is getting younger and younger, and hotter and hotter, and it's more and more like an American TV show, where everybody has to have perfect hair and perfect bodies and perfect teeth. Which, tbh, is pretty disapppinting.

Dear morons:

The Doctor not allowing horrible people to live is far from unprecedented or out of character. Hell, he did it in the second episode of the revived series. The Ninth Doctor was prepared to kill off the Nestene Consciousness and he blew up the Slitheen. Ten's motto was "No second chances". He said this before kicking the chief of the Sycorax off the edge of a spaceship, he incinerated the Racnoss empress and all her young, and do you seriously not remember what he did to the Family of Blood? I won't even mention "The Waters of Mars". As for Eleven, let's not forget that Eleven ordered all of the Silence killed on sight. And that's not even getting into how many people the Doctor allowed to die or just flat-out killed in classic serials. Given all that, why the fuck would he let someone who threatened one of his companions with rape, killed his favourite dinosaur, and flat-out committed genocide live? He hates genocide arguably even more than he hates the Daleks.

I swear, half the people bitching about this show don't even watch it.

Great episode. No complaints whatsoever. Probably a good episode to introduce people who are new to the show, really.

I made the following list of episodes as a recommendation of places to start for someone who's new to the series and overwhelmed by the number of episodes/serials.

  • The End of the World (Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Series 1)
  • Dalek (Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Series 1)
  • The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler/Captain Jack Harkness, Series 1)
  • The Girl in the Fireplace (Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Series 2)
  • Human Nature/The Family of Blood (Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones, Series 3)
  • Blink (Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones, Series 3; "Doctor-lite" and "Companion-lite" episode, which means both of them don't appear much in the episode; the lead role is Sally Sparrow, played by Carey Mulligan before she was particularly famous)
  • Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (Tenth Doctor/Donna Noble/River Song, Series 4)
  • Midnight (Tenth Doctor/Donna Noble, Series 4; Companion-lite)
  • The Eleventh Hour (Eleventh Doctor/Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Series 5)
  • The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (Eleventh Doctor/Amy Pond/River Song, Series 5)
  • Vincent and the Doctor (Eleventh Doctor/Amy Pond, Series 5)
  • The Doctor's Wife (Eleventh Doctor/Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Series 6)
Twelve stories is probably a fair kickoff selection from the new series. From the old series I'd recommend Genesis of the Daleks and, if you can put up with some hilariously awful special effects, The Ark in Space and the entire The Key to Time arc. (I haven't watched any of the non-Tom Baker serials from the old series yet, but The Caves of Androzani comes highly recommended).

Curious what people would add to/subtract from this list. I might actually add Dinosaurs on a Spaceship onto it.

Oh, Neffy, Neffy, Neffy. Your husband's name when he was sole Pharaoh was Akhenaten, not Amonhotep. :monster: Not sold on her characterisation, as the Pharaonic family of the "Aten Heresy" (as some Egyptologists call it) had one of the most open relationships between ruler and people of any time before the modern era. If Nephertiti was displeased with her husband, it would've been common knowledge, but all contemporary sources describe them as a devoted couple. Still, top marks for the actress who played her.

Most disappointing moment of the episode for me? The Mitchell and Webb comedy robots. Oh dear.

Aaron, in addition to your list:
Amy's Choice - Eleventh Doctor - for
hints of the Doctor's darker side
.
Remembrance of the Daleks - Seventh Doctor - the second storyline featuring Ace, my favourite companion. :awesome: Good dialogue, and decent effects.
Curse of Fenric - Seventh Doctor - an interesting take on
vampire myths
. Works well as a weird war story.
Battlefield - Seventh Doctor - great Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart story, also use of Arthur myths.

Could probably come up with some more, given time.

Good point about Amy's Choice. Not sure why I forgot that. I'd probably throw in The Girl Who Waited too :monster:

thanks for the other recommendations; I'll have to watch those soon :monster:

Ok, I just came across a rather interesting crackpot theory

It has come to my attention that there is evidence that Rory Williams, from Doctor Who, may turn out to be the Master. First off, I’m a little pissed at myself for not picking up on it. Second off, the evidence is in fact a bit compelling. Here is at least some of that evidence:

-Rory showed no surprise to the TARDIS being bigger on the inside. This is invariably the first thing that people tend to be shocked by.

-Rory has died and died and died again, once even being erased from the entirety of space-time. He always comes back.

-In “The God Complex” Rory is the only one who does not have a room filled with his fears. When the Doctor opens the room with HIS fears, hesays “Of course it was you.” and we hear the TARDIS distress signal, which was only ever heard before when the Master stole the TARDIS.

-Most compellingly, I think, is that in “Lets Kill Hitler,” when River Song regenerates in front of them and Rory is for the first time exposed to raw time energy, he immediately complains about a “Banging in my head.” The Master has always heard the sound of drums in his head. Moffat does not throw shit like that out pointlessly.

-Rory’s daughter, River Song, is half-Time Lord. I was always a bit suspicious about the explanation that it was because she was conceived in the TARDIS during midflight through the Time Vortex. As many characters made a point of mentioning, it really isn’t that easy to make a Time Lord.

-Finally, we never really got a good explanation as to how the cracks in the skin of the universe formed. We know they are closely related to Amy Pond. We know Rory is also. The Master was presumed dead, how else would he get back?

So basically there are two possibilities here: Rory Williams is just Rory Williams, or Rory is the fucking Master. We all knew the Master would return eventually, so I suspect the latter. I can’t believe I have to wait until fall for this to be resolved.

Grrr…..

Not sure what to make of this :monster:

The Cloister Bell was also heard at the end of Turn Left. :monster: IIRC, it was also heard a few times in the classic series.
Rory showed no surprise to the TARDIS being bigger on the inside. This is invariably the first thing that people tend to be shocked by.
Well, Amelia Pond was told it was bigger inside than outside, and Amelia Pond repeated what she'd experienced to many people. And while people often are shocked the first time, those with scientific knowledge tend to get over it quickly (eg, in the Paul McGann movie, Grace Holloway is initially surprised, but quickly gives some theoretical physics jargon about the TARDIS' threshold).

Amy Pond: "Yeah, I think that's Hitler in the cupboard." :monster:

Not that I'm counting it out, mind you.

Yeah, like I said, it's a crackpot theory :monster: The "banging in his head" I think is the strongest argument in favour. It is possible it's just Hitler in the cupboard as Amy said, but maybe not :monster:

Don't be silly. Rory can't be the master. He's the Rani.
Amy is Romana, naturally.

Okay so I just finished with the ninth doctor.

I was really looking forward to David Tennant when I first started but I really grew attached to Christopher Eccleston.

I just... I can't...

For whatever it's worth, I've seen episodes with Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith. I can't choose a favourite or least favourite. They're all great.

Three Amigos and Frankenstein references in the same program? Only Doctor Who!

And, while Karen Gillian is a good actress, Amy still proves to be... Amy. Urges the Doctor to kill the Gangers, cos "they're a bit freaky", but complains about a guy who was taking her hostage being hung out to dry to answer for the crimes he ran away from, because "that's not what they do"?

Still, props to the actor who played Jek, being able to make him both sympathetic and menacing.
