As someone who also doesn't like the Compilation and sees it as cheap fan service spin-offs that ruin the characters (aside from Crisis Core, I didn't mind Crisis Core), I can assure you Remake won't fall into the same shite. It's very good, not perfect, but very good.

My tips that I wished people had given me on my first playthrough:

I second the advice to listen to NPC's, and talk to characters wherever possible. Also, practice maining everybody and learn how they all work in combat, some of the hardest boss battles for me were because I hadn't practiced maining them all enough. Which was stupid in hindsight because they are all so fun to play.

Just started chapter 3. Gonna call it a day.

Really enjoying this game so far! That train sequence was really good, teasing me with music and all. Pretty sure I heard the Kalm theme? Might be confusing it with something it with something else though.
