So:

Spirit energy (lifestream?) = mako energy

"Return to the planet" is when someone dies, and their soul essentially repurposes itself to aid nature?

So, basically no spirit energy = no nature = bye bye world. Mako reactor bad.

Am I on the right track?

Edit:

So mako is compressed spirit energy. So was that pool of mako energy in the Kalm flashback actually spirit energy, as it was yet to be processed?

Damn, you're catching up to the playthrough I'm doing with my mate.

Basically that's all correct yeah. The lifestream is made up of souls, memories, life, etc. Once you die it returns to the energy of the planet, from which new life is born and the cycle repeats.
Condensed lifestream becomes mako energy, even further condensed it crystalizes into materia which holds the wisdom of planet basically, allowing the use of magic, summons, and other things that are basically manifestations of the combined beliefs, knowledge, and skills of all the people who've gone before.

If you're at cosmo canyon I assume you got Tifa and Aeriths scenes in Gongaga?

Wow. That's actually a really cool concept.
So are the protagonists actually aiding in the demise of the planet by using materia?

By "life" do you just mean nature or human life also?

There was a scene with a shooting star

All life, I'll leave it to you to philosophize about what life is made out of, but lifestream is made up out of life, and life is made up out of lifestream, they're the same thing. Memories, fantasies, dreams, consciousness, personality, in other words, the soul. That is the lifestream.
The precise mechanics are never laid out but I always imagine it as patterns, just like patterns in a book combine to form words, then sentences, so too do the patterns in the lifestream define individuals. When you die, your experiences rejoin the lifesteam and become a part of the overall pattern as you slowly diffuse into it like a bucket of water thrown into the ocean.

From what I gather, normally, over time, all those accumulated experiences do allow for the lifestream to grow, I don't think there is a SET amount of it that is forever unchanging (evidenced by the fact that it's being used up). Materia does actually exist naturally out in the wild, it's just that the massive industrialized extraction of it that simply makes it too much for the planet to handle.

I think you might be confusing Cosmo Canyon, the place where Nanaki comes from, with Gongaga, which is a town you could have gone to just before that, and shows you quite a crucial piece of the puzzle. Not sure if you can backtrack for those scenes.

It's not that there's a set limit to growth, it's just that mako reactors refine such a huge amount of Lifestream that it's literally bleeding the planet dry.

Planets and life evolve due to the diversity of life and experiences that get added back. And that's why life can thrive. But when Lifestream gets refined into Mako and burned up, it's gone. The potential limit is unknown. We don't know if there is one. But it sadly doesn't matter because mako reactors are taking more than what's being brought in through natural deaths.

I think I'm at Gongaga now, fighting Rude and Reno. My own stupid fault, I saw the place on the way to Cosmo Canyon, drove up to it and pressed X. Nothing happened. Looked on the map and saw that there was no red dot so I thought nothing of it. This was before I realised that you actually have to EXIT the vehicle to go in an area. *sigh*

Learnt some stuff about a guy called Zack. Was that the "piece of the puzzle"? His parents mentioned him being a SOLDIER.

I was just wondering if I missed anything regarding the Promised Land and the Cetra, as Aeris spoke up about learning more about it at the cosmo candle

No, I think you probably got it then. There was a guy named Zack who left a few years ago to become a Soldier, but whom the parents hadn't heard from in years. They say he had a girlfriend, and ask if that's perhaps Aerith. Aerith seems shook by this and leaves the building, Tifa also seems shook by this and also leaves the building, then when you talk to them outside Aerith confirms that Zack was her first love but she hasn't heard from him in years, and Tifa reminisces about how what he did sounds a lot like what Cloud did (leaving home to become a soldier).

Stuff about a reunion. Weird cloaked men.
A letter written by Hojo about rebuilding Cloud's hometown and paying people to pretend like it never happened. A new character, who was way too fucking hard to get. Talks of Sephiroth's biological mother. Sephiroth mentioning the reunion and Jenova, and then promptly flying away. My, oh my. That area didn't let up. Lots to remember, and my head hurts. I have a tendency to play this game for WAY too long.

I'm probably gonna go missing until I've beaten the game. I'll return and let you all know what I thought, and then I'll most likely play through it again.

I do get emails regarding messages on this thread, so don't go dropping any messages/spoilers asking me what I thought about the end of the game, for example.

See ya for now :D
