That's where the scenes with Tifa and Aerith I mentioned are. You can recruit the secret character by fighting them in the woods, just run around a bit and you'll find her.

So:

Spirit energy (lifestream?) = mako energy

"Return to the planet" is when someone dies, and their soul essentially repurposes itself to aid nature?

So, basically no spirit energy = no nature = bye bye world. Mako reactor bad.

Am I on the right track?

So mako is compressed spirit energy. So was that pool of mako energy in the Kalm flashback actually spirit energy, as it was yet to be processed?
