Then I hope you talked to Brahne afterwards when controlling Steiner.

Yeah, the combat does feel a tad bit slow, even compared to FF7. Defeating enemies isn't as satisfying as it is in FF7 either imo, but I like it regardless. The abilities seem pretty cool so far and honestly, this cast is pretty fantastic.

That's one of the reasons I always play with Moguri mod these days, tweaks the combat speed.

I missed this during my last playthrough, which dashed my hopes for a “perfect” playthrough right out of the gate lol. At least there are several more opportunities to get that item later.

There are three reasons not to use the PS4/Steam speed-up combat cheat:

1. Levelling up increases your stats based on a calculation that factors in your current equipment. So, it’s best to grind only when you have good/the best gear. This was FF9’s answer to the mindless grind that FF7 players complained about (FF8 had a different response). Because of this, it’s best to play smarter, not faster.

2. Characters will leave the party before you know it and you will miss them when they are gone.

3. Your main character is a thief. Stealing and support abilities are a priority in all battles. Instead of the brutal satisfaction of chopping robots in half with the Buster Sword, combat instead reflects Zidane’s utility.

If you do want to indulge in a cheat, I recommend “skip battle intro.” This removes the very slow sweep around the battle screen that begins each random encounter. This was because the battle models, textures, and animations threatened to set the PS1 on fire, and had to be loaded slowly. Such is not the case anymore. This cuts your random encounter times in half without actually cheating. Best of all, it doesn’t change the boss fight intros.

You can find this cheat in the Config menu, along with a few other “quality of life” cheats that I would save for a second play through (you can toggle 9999 damage from level 1, which kills the fun haha)

One of the many things I love about this game so far.

I admit, I indulged. Mostly because I already played the game 5 times which probably equates to 10 hours total trying to steal from that f**** Hill Gigas :monster: .

Similar rationale for why I turned on the All-Yeahs cheat for Tifa's limit break in my last modded FF7 playthrough. I've paid my dues over the years in missed Final Heavens. Time for Tifa to be unstoppable :monster:

This is why I dropped FFVIII the last few times I tried playing it, I died after grinding the same enemy for 3 hours, because I forgot that that game has those BS level up mechanics.

The "stats depend on equipment" thing is also the one thing I dislike about IX

Fixxed.
Man the steal rate in IX is infuriating. The moguri mod's 100% steal rate cheat might just be my favorite thing it does

Yeah, I also activated that with my playthrough with my mate, aint nobody got time for that.
My favorite part is that it combines with my favorite Mod the "beatrix only" mod from alternate fantasy. Which is literally a dream come true, and I mean literally literally this time, I've talked about wanting that specific thing for over a decade. I always felt it was a useless pipedream.

Same, I did my time, time and time again.

Is the song that Garnet/Dagger sings her theme or...?

Man, that song has been stuck in my head for the past few weeks now.

FFIX's got an extremely strong cast and gameplay wise they all bring something to the team.

@ThatGuyMikey

I've been thinking of some more things based on where you are so far and you're meeting more characters so few more things.

Tip for Freya, one of her later Dragon abilities' strength of it is based on how many dragon type enemies you defeat. you'll naturally defeat some the game goes on but if you want to max the ability its worth doing some grinding of dragon type enemies at stages in the game.

You will have favourites on the team, my personal favourite team is always Zidane, Garnet, Vivi and Steiner but there will be parts of the game where you will be required to use all of the main ones and also where not every party member will be available, there'll be instances where you have a set team and can't change them for some time so it's important to balance out each character as well and not just focus on maxing out and giving the best equipment to favourites, they all bring something really good to the team, there's not one character who is useless in battle, there are certain instances where certain characters will work better than others. I will suggest to keep Vivi and Steiner always on the same team where available so Steiner can avail of the Sword Magic ability alongside his Sword Art.

There some FF games where you can get away with having a certain team the entire time but FFIX does require you to use the full roster at many times during the game.

Later in the game without spoiling anything you will need to split your main characters into two teams for two different locations, it may be worth asking on here if you're not sure who to bring to one location and keep in the other as there are some restrictions that may impact certain characters in battle depending on who you pick.

Again without spoiling, If you've met Freya then you'll also have the option to meet another main character very soon when you leave Lindblum, they are optional at this stage but will be a permanent party member at a later stage, I highly recommend you take the detour and meet them now to have an extra party member to help out.

This character is a blue mage so you need to learn their spells via their eat command (you'll see why its eat when you meet them) with regular enemies, generally it's best to knock the monster's HP down a bit first to give you a better success, some of those spells are VERY potent and incredibly useful so I highly recommend you build up a repertoire of their spells and have a look into which monsters provide which blue magic spell as not all of them do.

if you're currently at Lindblum also once you get access to outside again also take another detour head to the chocobo forest and spend a bit of time playing Chocobo Hot and Cold, some people find it really tedious and it is in the beginning but as you play more and the speed picks up, its really worth it. The Treasures you can get from it are unreal in the later stages when you have more access and it does become and addictive game,

If you come across any 'friendly' monsters, you'll know by the change in battle music and they're accessible in certain areas, you may have already met one of them on the way to Dali, but if not DO NOT attack them, instead wait for them to request a material from you and give them it, they give you quite a nice amount of AP as well and a clue on where to find the next friendly monster, there's 9 of them in total accessible as you progress through the game, they are optional but necessary to meet if you want to complete a late sidequest.

There's also the Ragtime mouse, optional sidequest he has the same battle music as the friendly monsters and he'll do a true or false answer, most of the answers are available if you've been paying attention to things in the game but i's probably just say go look up the answers on ahead if you do come across them, he's only encountered if you go into a forest and I think you then have to visit a town to reset the encounter so you can find him again, its a random chance to encounter him so you won't always get him everytime you go into a forest.

I think thats my lot at the moment.

The one she sings at the inn in Dali? Pretty, isn’t it?

Re: spoilers. I don’t know how much Mikey cares about spoilers, but I want to point out that advice to the tune of “Once you get to/leave/meet/recruit [proper noun]” is a spoiler, one that always manages to slip out of spoiler tags. It sets up an expectation of what’s about to happen.

For a first timer, every scene, starting from scene 1, is new.

How much time do I need to spend playing it?

(I don't care for that game at all myself, but I usually feel like I'm in the minority on that)

@Mr. Ite : ok i'll ask as I feel the spoiler mention was directed at me. I'm not trying to spoil it, just trying to help with some bits and pieces withiut giving away the story.

@ThatGuyMikey do you feel the info I gave is too spoilery if so I can scale back and if it is sorry, promise I'm not trying to spoil for you, I didn't think it was, just more hints on the game plan aspects that I thought might help but i'll certainly not say anymore if thats the case.

For hot and cold you can only play it to certain points in the beginning unless you just wanna farm regular items but in terms of Chocographs, you'll be told when Choco can't find any more for the time being and some although can be found they won't be accessible straight away.

I wouldn't say you spend hours and hours on it but I recommend from time to time when you're able to, to go back and search for few. As Choco levels though it does get easier and faster to search for them.

Some of their actual locations are difficult to actually pinpoint on the map so if you get stuck trying to find one let us know.

Quina is indeed an oddball, but a very useful one in battle! I'd highly recommend checking out a guide to find out which monsters provide which blue magic.

Huh. I mean, it's not bad per se, it's just tedious. Not my favoirite part of the game so far; I feel like I have "Kweh?!" burned into my brain.

I've got 200ish points and a lvl 10 beak. Called it quits for now.

It's fine! As long as you don't directly spoil story events in the game, I'm happy. I've just backtracked from Gizamaluke's Grotto in order to go to Qu's Marsh and Chocobo's forest, to give you an idea of where I am. Probably gonna call it a day, and advance to Burmecia tomorrow.

Still find it hilarious that a princess KO'd a thief with weed.

A couple missteps keep it from the heights of VII's cast, in my opinion, but yeah, it's pretty great :monster:
I honestly MUCH prefer the cast of FFIX. To me, FFVII had a great main trio in Cloud, Tifa, and Barret, and Aerith was great. But I didn't much care for the rest.
Red XIII was cool but his story ends too quickly and I don't much care about his development, nor what he's going through (except for during cosmo Canyon), Cid and Vincent were mostly meh, and I just could never stand Yuffie and Cait Sith.
I think FFIX is helped a lot by how it switches characters around, you have to use everyone, in FFVII I ALWAYS have the same standard team.
The only miss imo in the characters for IX is Amarant, who is simply not important enough, and IMO should have been replaced by a certain other character that graces our team for a while.

I feel like I have "Kweh?!" burned into my brain.

Understandable, although I once got 10.000 points by accident. Chocobo hot and cold isn't my favorite part either, but the chocographs are my favorite sidequest in any game ever. Those treasure maps made me feel suchs a rush of adventure when I was younger I just can't even.
I've always hated the FFVII chocobo breeding mechanic in comparison.

Probably gonna call it a day, and advance to Burmecia tomorrow.
Oeh, Burmecia, where you get to fight my favorite Final Fantasy character of all time.
