FFIX....Another Ultimania project?

So, with the conclusion of our Dissidia coverage, I was wondering if it'd be okay if we not only covered FFVII Ultimania translations, but...translations of other popular FF games.

If so, I thought I'd put out, FFIX. FFIX has a very interesting plot with lots of questions that were left unanswered. Such as, the assimilation process of Terra, what exactly happened to the crystals and the heroes when Kuja decided to unleash Ultima in the Crystal World, how did Vivi produce offspring and of course...who the fuck is Necron? :monster:

If there's sufficient interest in it, I could get a copy of the FFIX Ultimania and begin scanning it, and see if our staff and users would be interested in translating some portions of it.

So, any thoughts?

LMAO

Well I did say, "If there's sufficient interest in it, I could get a copy of the FFIX Ultimania and begin scanning it, and see if our staff and users would be interested in translating some portions of it."

You wouldn't be alone. And this wouldn't be *immediately* after all this work. I know that huge ass Nomura interview wasn't easy. You deserve a break after all. :monster:

I just want to have an idea of what we should do next :duhard:

I've just sent Mako the full range of anything that would be potentially interesting in the FFIX Ultimania.

There's character profiles for most of the cast (for those interested, Beatrix is 28; Lani is 19; Fratley is 25; Mikoto is 15; Hilda is 27; Cid is 35; Brahne is 39), but most don't look like they'll have much of interest to say.

The most interesting part is a "World Establishment" section, which is 4 page encyclopedia of terms, including Gaia, Terra, the Crystal, Genomes, the Iifa Tree, Eidolons and some other things.

To anyone who's getting their hopes about Necron, though, don't. It doesn't talk about him at all from what I see.

After that is a 3 page "World Chronology" section that offers a timeline going back 5000 years. Might have some intersting stuff.

There's also an interview at the back with the director, Hiroykui Itou, but it looks unbelievably dull.

Maybe I'll find some time to participate in translating later. I've had this book for a while but just never really had the interest to try translating anything out of it. FFIX isn't one of my favorites.

What about an FFVIII Ultimania? And FFX? =D
All in due time of course. :monster:

All the good stuff for FFX has been done:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=2000008&topic=21477330

For FFVIII, there's nothing really that interesting to mess with. There's not a lot there to begin with, and the only stuff anybody was ever curious about anyway was whether Gunblades fired bullets and whether sorceresses were immortal. DarkAngel settled those mysteries years ago.

By the way, you guys are in luck. I can't sleep tonight, so I'm going to try to translate the FFIX timeline.

I should also mention that most of the characters have their own individual timelines separate from the overall world timeline. I'm not planning to mess with those, but maybe someone else will.

There's honestly not a lot of reason to. Most of the personal timelines are full of redundant information we already know from playing the game (in other words, the majority of those charts are based during the game itself).

I have Kefka's profile of the Ultimania-like book for FFVI.

It tells us a lot about Kefka that is not presented in the game and has a lot of interesting details.

It's a great idea. Even because the FFIX Ultimania have a lot of information not presented in the game.

I have an image of hitoshura in a back room, lit entirely by candles, bloodshot, tearing eyes, pouring over japanese text and writing english. A knock on the door, and Mako enters with an arm full of Ultimanias. "All right, we got 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 for ya." :P

On topic, it would take a damn good explanation to convince that Necron wasn't just put there because they realized Kuja was too easy. :monster:

Alright, so here's the World Chronology section, at least up to the point that the game begins. It continues up to the end of the game, but I really don't see the point in translating all of the dates for stuff we already know about, though I will include the last two dates.

FFIX World Chronology
5000 years ago: Terra attempted to take over Gaia and assimilate it, but failed, resulting in a cataclysm. Garland planted a giant tree (the Iifa Tree) to control the environment and oversee its natural recovery

Year 0 (1800 years ago): Gradually, the environment starts being repaired. Following that, the Shimmering Island begins to shine, marking the beginning of Gaia's modern civilization. Calendar begins

Circa 800: Mist begins emerging.
Monsters begin appearing.
People begin seeking places to live at high elevations, where there isn't Mist.
The ruling kingdoms collapse and the new kingdom of Alexandria is created at a high elevation.

The Soul Divider is created

Circa 1300: Alexander runs amok during a failed summoning experiment.
The gem used to summon him is dived into 4 fragments, three of which are divided among three countries for safekeeping.
The summoners leave Alexandria with the remaining gem in their possession.
They find a place where the earth's pulse concentrates (Madain Sari) and set up residence there.

Ninth Lindblum War (Year 1389).

Cleyra's sandstorm comes into existence around this time (via use of the gem fragment)

Cid's ancestor becomes the regent of Lindblum

Circa 1400: People's hearts grow colder and conflicts are frequent

Circa 1600: Fifteenth Lindblum War (Year 1601)

Circa 1700: Age of civil war (return to fighting over territory near national borders)
Cleyra severs ties with outside world

Circa 1710: Quina born? Thorn and Zorn born

Circa 1740: Dr. Tot born

1750: Brief skirmishes between each nation continue

1755: Baku born

1756: Cid's father (8th generation) becomes the regent of Lindblum; invents the mechanism which utilizes Mist

1760: Brahne born

1762: Lindblum's regent implements airships

1764: Cid born

1766: Steiner born

1770: Lindblum's regent intervenes in the conflict between Alexandria and Burmecia with airships

1771: The conflict is resolved (airship revolution)

1772: Alexandria and Lindblum begin diplomatic relations
Beatrix born

1773: Amarant born

1776: Brahne (16th generation) coronated as new queen of Alexandria
Kuja born

1778: Freya born

1780: Lindblum's regent collapses from illness; power passes to his son, Cid (9th generation), as his replacement

1783: Cid (9th generation) begins the development of a mechanism that doesn't utilize Mist

1784: Garnet born

1786: Cid (9th generation) and Hilda marry

1787: Lindblum's former regent, Cid's father (8th generation), passes away

1790: Madain Sari is secretly destroyed

1792: Construction of South Gate begins. Berkmea opens for business (the time period of Dr. Tot's reminiscence in Disc 2)

1793: Materials for the construction of South Gate are transported through Berkmea
Eiko born

1794: Brahne's husband passes away. South Gate completed

1795: Freya leaves Burmecia. Prince Puck leaves Burmecia one month later

1799:
March: The grain fields of Dali become an arrival and departure place
May: Madain Sari's last adult passes away
June: Quale's pupil, Quina, travels in the direction of Alexandria
July: The new airship which doesn't utilize Mist (the Hilda Garde 1) is completed
Vivi born
August: The factory underneath Dali becomes ready
October: The Black Mages are born

1800:
January 1: Quan dies
January 15: Game starts
March 9: The Iifa Tree begins running amok. Zidane parts ways from his companions
March 16: The Iifa Tree settles

Alright, so for those keeping count, interesting things we've learned here include:

1) Vivi's only six months old at the start of the game
2) Cid was 21 and Hilda was 13 when they got married
3) Dagger was apparently 6 when Madain Sari was destroyed, so it's odd she didn't know all along that she wasn't from Alexandria
4) The Iifa Tree apparently stopped moving one week after Zidane went back for Kuja

Whoa, that's...really interesting.

I really want to know the specifics of the cataclysm myself. From the scans I got they really go indepth regarding the crystal and how the whole integration went wrong.

But thanks so much for this! I'm gonna go post this on the front page later today.

But still, Mikoto's 15? Dang. :(

I found this a long time ago:

"Yeah, in the era prior to Terra needing to devour other planets. Terra only seeked out other planets for assimilation because it started to die. Ever see Fullmetal Alchemist? Terra's a lot like Dante. Prolonging life does not erase the inevitable. But, Terra WAS once alive prior to it's time of decay, and was a world that flourished with magic and culture. Actually, locations like Ipsen's Castle, Desert Palace and Oeilvert were originally located ON Terra, but due to the imperfect Fusion, they got fused into the surface of Gaia. Also, Terra, itself, would've looked more like a real planet and not the thing you actually seen in FFIX. I'm not sure I went into this, but it's something that is talked about in FFIX Ultimania:

Gaia, on the verge of dying, used a specifically great magical spell called "Fusion". Compare it to Meteor and Holy from FFVII, a sort of "MONUMENTAL" spell with great powers the envelopes the planet. Fusion's ability allowed Terra to scan the universe to find "new planets", worlds that have just been created. It homes in on these planets and assimilates them with Terra. But, Fusion can only occur if the "new planets" have "pure crystals".

Lesson on planet crystals: All life originates from it and returns to it. When someone dies, they take back their memories into the crystal and these experiences allow the crystal to develop more complex forms of life. "Memories" are the key to evolution. "Pure crystals" are crystals that have yet to have any life return to them. "Impure crystals" are crystals that have already begun to absorb memories of the dead.

Now, back to Terra. At that time, after consuming MANY other planets' lifetimes just to prolong it's own existence, Terra seeked to use Fusion to continue this cycle, but Garland ran into some trouble. He could not locate any "new planets" with "pure crystals". The youngest planet he could locate was Gaia, but it already began it's path to evolution and the crystal was "impure". Garland forced the Fusion, which resulted in catastrophe. Some of Terra's locations were melded onto Gaia's surface, and in the heart of the mass Fusion, people's gene were fused into the gene of animals. Many of these fused mutations were so unstable, they died instantly. A majority of the world's population was wiped out with only a handful remaining. Terra was also sucked into Gaia's core, and exists in an alternate dimension. That is the Terra you visit in FFIX. Old Terra, probably didn't seem all too different than Gaia, in terms of looking like an actual planet."

Garland, after waiting, could not wait any longer and forced the Fusion on Gaia. This was disastrous. It killed a majority of the people on the Gaia, and the rest were "mutated", fused with animals(the reason why there are so many animal people in the world). Only a few normal humans remained. As penalty for Garland's mistake, Terra was sucked into Gaia's core, existing in an alternate dimension.

After that, Garland had to use his backup plan, the Iifa Tree, which would act as the "Soul Divider", existing in both dimensions and relaying Terra souls into Gaia's crystal while turning Gaia souls into Mist. Mist would then give birth to monsters, and that would cause people to fight the monsters. People will die in the process, sending their souls to the Iifa Tree, which will turn them into Mist and it starts again. Eventually all of Gaia's souls would be wasted, turned into Mist. Terra's souls will be inserted into Gaia's crystal and then the Terra souls will be born into Gaia and rule the planet."

Terra was sucked inside Gaia's core. This is that actual diagram from the Japanese FFIX Ultimania site:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...feFlowChart.jpg

Top lefthand corner is Gaia, and top righthand corner is Terra. Under it, in the bottom is how both function(the hole is actually the warp tunnel of the Shimmering Island). Terra is within Gaia's core and you can see that the buildings are actually within the inner layer of the core. When you actually travel to Terra, it appears to be another world, but in fact, it's within Gaia, on dimension. If you look at the sky in Terra, I believe it's when you first arrive, you see the roots of the Iifa tree stretching upward and they are wrapped around a glowing light. That's Terra's crystal. Terra's crystal is red. Red is the color of the light a crystal sheds when it's about to die. Blue is the color of the light of a healthy crystal. They state that Each planet's crystal's aura is reflected by their moons. That's why one moon is blue and one is red. Terra's moon became Gaia's moon when the imperfect fusion occurred, but the still shines upon it. The reason the Shimmering Island is "shimmering" is because it's the light of both crystals(Gaia and Terra) shining through the island. Now, if you look at the bottom diagram of the combined planets, you'll see that the crystal is purple. That's easy to figure out. It's showing for the presence of BOTH crystals. Iifa's roots are existing in both dimensions, as I stated. In Terra's, the roots are extracting the Terran souls from it's dying crystal. In Gaia, the roots are placing Terra's souls within Gaia's crystal and are extracting Gaia's souls, taking them to the trunk where they could be turned into Mist. That's the way to make Gaia into Terra."

Wait, just a few steps back (and I'm totally going to ruin your fun now): IX != Compilation, ergo, I don't think you lot should be posting it on the frontpage, or at least not on such a large scale as the other translations.

Off course, you're free to use the site's features to help out with the translations, or host it, or whatever.
