Just finished the chapter a little bit ago, and I have to admit, many of my fears were unjustified. There was so much good stuff here, and many great Clessie moments - finding out about her past and her dad and how that's what starts to soften Cloud, how he has to convince himself that helping her is just another mission when you can clearly hear the doubt in his voice (also a sign of possible attraction on his end, else the doubt wouldn't have been there). Also, the dinner invite at the end was great, and it makes you wonder what might've happened with her if he'd been able to make it. There are also other subtle signs of possible attraction toward her on Cloud's end throughout many of his interactions with her (just watch his eye contact, for instance), but I think it's done in such a way that there's room to see it how you want to see it. If you want see him as not interested, it can work. If you do think he's developing a little interest in her, their interactions can show that, too. So see it however you want.
I
loved the hug she gave him, he was awkward of course, but he didn't pull her off right away either even though he's clearly strong enough to have done it if he had really wanted to. And his concern for her after the ghost attack and how he carried her inside the bar was just the kind of thing I'd been hoping for. The same with him encouraging her before setting out for Reactor 5. And Wedge's comment doesn't bother me so much now, either. He didn't seem overly serious when he was saying it, and he never directly referenced her flirting. I did wonder about it, though, but when she reminded Cloud about their dinner date (yes, I see it as a date, and I'm sure she did, too), that told me that her attraction was genuine and that her flirting with him came, at least by then, from real interest in him. If it hadn't been, she wouldn't have done that.
And I loved seeing how Cloud bonded with the guys. It was great to see Biggs and Wedge developed and backing Cloud up in the warehouse battle, and Cloud's reaction to Wedge saving him from the sweeper was a sight to see. I loved how he was willing to walk him home after they landed, something he
never would have done at the start of the game. Wedge and his cats, that's just great characterization and development, as is Biggs' tendency to worry and overthink. It was nice that Jessie fought in the ghost battle, I just wish Cloud could've had a solo mission with her. But I'm still very happy with what I did see, so it's all good. And speaking of Jessie, after all I've seen, I have only one thing to say about her:
The plate collapse is going to be so hard now, even more than it already was (and I have my own personal reasons for that unrelated to the game itself). I'm honestly dreading it. It's been the thing I've been simultaneously most anxious/afraid to see for months, and now it's even worse. SE are sadists, I tell ya.
