Okay everybody, I know some of you have had your issues with my lad Jairus in the past, but right now I think he deserves all of your respect. This, this right here above me, this is what pure, unadulterated vindication looks like, and it is a beautiful thing.

Edit: and by "above me" I mean "on the previous page."

Happy to hear, from both Mayo and Jairus, that it's possible to master the bike minigame (and that you are rewarded for it). Did suspect that Jessie's dialogue at the end would change depending on your performance, as I performed quite badly and Jessie's dialogue seemed to reflect that. She was really struggling to put a positive spin on my bad results.

Yes, you can, and the reward is totally worth it! What a wonderful moment between them. You have to see it play out to really understand. But it really is great and very sweet. I posted a clip of it in the Clessie thread if you want to check it out.

Anyway, you have to have your health up to at least 75% by the time you finish, with no retries at checkpoints. If you don't get it, you have to reload a save to try again. Took me several tries but I finally got it. Blocking and dodging are important against Roche because he'll do the most damage to you if you're not careful. The other enemies can be managed if you pay attention and keep dodging the grenades and electrical blasts. Using the long range attack helps as well.

There are three different outcomes, one where you fail, one where you barely succeed but get no reward, and the best one where she does reward you and you get the trophy. Better reward than any item could be, imo. I'd take that from her any day.:hearteyes:

I need somewhere to write my thoughts so far, so consider this a diary to get it all out, aha. Apologies for the lack of relevance to the current convo.
I’m right before the Reactor 5 mission.
Everything is so perfect.

I now see why they decided to make multiple parts. There’s so much they’re expanding on - AVALANCHE has deep character motivations, where they slowly unveiled as we get to know them. (this shouldn’t be taken for granted - it would’ve been really easy for Square to just give them some self-righteous speeches about their motivations and call it a day. Instead, we see their daily lives, and how their lifestyles and experience inform their ideals. We see their disagreements, their jokes, their triumphs...AVALANCHE feels like real people, where we learn more about them through interaction. Not cliched info dumps.

The dialogue between everyone is so charismatic, too. By this point in the game, it honestly felt like I was hanging out with good friends. The scenes after the parachuting segment are gold. (And anytime Barret’s on screen, he steals the show IMO)

Cloud’s cold shoulder to AVALANCHE slowly melting away the more he spends time with them, the little ways he shows his vulnerability to Tifa...the progression of Cloud’s mood is just as perfect and well done as AVALANCHE’s development. It all feels so natural! Cloud’s becoming a part of the slums community as he helps the townsfolk.

At first, I was shocked they moved some of the plot twists / reveals so early (learning Cloud killed Sephiroth five years ago in the first thirty minutes instead of at the end of disc 2) but the way they’re setting up the plot makes a TON of sense and, I think, makes the plot feel a lot more connected. Before, pre and post Midgar felt a bit disconnected. Now, they’re woven into each other beautifully so far. They even set up Mako poisoning and parachuting into Midgar with segments.

All of the original game moments are in here, our point of view is just “zoomed in” where we get to see everything else that goes into the events on an intimate level.

Also...Sector 7 at night is probably the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in any game, ever.
After putting the game down after a few hours, going back to reality feels like waking up from a vivid dream. It just feels so...real.

P.S. Wedge rewarding you if you beat his score at darts really delighted me. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

I remember getting the "you passed the test" dialogue but not the scene you had. Does it always start like that as long as you finish, or is my memory terrible?

Went back and got the Biker Boy trophy and... holy moly, she really did it! That reward she gave him!

I'm still giddy over seeing that, and that one moment alone completely makes up for her not being on the Sector 5 mission and the other things from the OG that she didn't have here as well as not being able to get the flower. Oh, man, it's like SE read my mind about everything I wanted to see between them in the remake and did it! I'm all like...

Still a little hard to believe SE actually did it, but they did. I take back every criticism I've made about them over this whole thing. I completely and totally jumped the gun on it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. But they really did do it. Suffice it to say, I'm VERY happy right now, hehe. Thank you, SE. You've just made my whole day. :D:D:D

In the words of Quina: "I... so happy."

I didn't enjoy the bike battle because I don't enjoy that kind of thing, but I was better at it in my first try than I've ever been in the similar segment from the OG, which tells you something, I think.

This remake is written much more like a novel than the OG was. For example, they're taking pains to show that Corneo is interested in Avalanche, instead of leaving him with the OG one-line explanation; or, as someone else pointed out, they take care to establish that mako poisoning is a thing. However, I really couldn't believe that Jessie needed Cloud to steal her father's ID. That didn't make any sense on any level. Needing him there to cause a diversion totally made sense, though.

I do have a yes or no question for anyone who's farther along. Does whether you get her reward
kiss
or not affect how any of her later scenes play out?

All right! Chapter 4!
  • First, to get the negative (if you can call it that) out of the way, I actually can't stand Jessie. She's exactly the kind of character that just annoys the shit out of me. I'll take Roche over her because at least I'm supposed to hate Roche. That said, this is just my personal taste so I'm happy that a lot of other people like her!
  • Wedge and Biggs are fantastic and I like them a lot. Especially Wedge; I had heard that some people didn't like the fat jokes but I honestly think he's using his size to lighten the mood a lot because he's a friendly guy. Most the the fat jokes were coming from him, seemed to me.
  • The music in this chapter was perfection.
  • I always hated the controls of the bike game in the OG, so this new version is just way, way better. I'd actually play the bike game at the Gold Saucer now.
  • Kinda beating a dead horse, but going topside was cool and it all looked fantastic. Shinra tower at the end of the road is such a cool sight, so was the gap in the plates where they parachuted down.

My take:

She didn't want the others to be in the plan at first, and that was why she got Cloud to agree without the others knowing. Once Biggs and Wedge tagged along, it would have seemed strange to visit her mom with just one of them, and there's the fact that they might have blundered the robbery because I imagine that they usually become clumsy due to stress (you know, they knew aboout his father and might feel bad about the deed). I think she needed someone detached from all that stuff, and she had seem Cloud in action. Plus, it was a nice excuse to spend time with him :monster:

She says as much when Cloud walks into the room and you have her voice over instructions.

Jessie: I need you to grab his Shinra ID card. And yeah, I know I should do it myself, but...
Jessie: but I honestly don't think I'm up to it.

Agreed. It clearly pained her too much to see him like that, for one. That’s the most important part. Her father’s accident is a big source of pain for her, and also informs her motivation in taking down the monstrosity that Shinra’s built up.

Secondly, even if that wasn’t enough...I think she’s not above making excuses to bring Cloud along. When you like somebody like the way she clearly likes Cloud, you make reasons to want them around.

Also, she was playing a key role in distracting her mother.

Which makes me wonder what motivated a certain Darklighter and a certain Antilles to join Avalanche, especially considering the common denominators between Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Jessie's reasons for turning on Shinra.

I'm quitting here for the night. Not moving on until I get the best result for the bike thing unless I'm just that bad. I was the same with darts though I did finally manage to beat the high score there.
This specific situation is why I kept 2 separate manual save files handy. In fact, when I booted my 2nd manual save, I changed the difficulty to Easy to maximize my chances of getting that Biker Boy trophy.
