Some off the top of my head:
  1. OG did the reminder of The Promise better. Tifa had to remind Cloud of it to convince him to stay, whereas in 7R he remembers it and decides to stay pretty much on his own, even when Avalance weren't even offering him a job anymore.
  2. They talked and just stood there for way too long whilst trying to prevent the plate drop.
  3. Nobody takes a SOLDIER First Class seriously. I was hoping that they'd fix that or explain how Turks/Rufus can even fight someone like that.
  4. I didn't need no fate-protecting ghosts and their bullshit.
  5. Assault on Shinra HQ was terrible. No "headless freak" Jenova (Sephiroth stole the show), no actual "no human could've done this" to "Sephiroth's sword in President Shinra" horror-wtf sequence. Instead Sephiroth just pops up like always, with his stupid monologue.
  6. Cloud goes all AC in the end, yet he needs to climb 2 meter tall ladders or can't traverse through some silly obstacles without doing some time-consuming shit.

I think that was intentional though, they deliberately want Cloud to remember the promise on his own without prompting from Tifa. As the dialogue in the OG can come as as kinda juvenile/immature at time or obvious "as you know"-esque monologues.

6. is throughout the whole game, and it honestly irks me a bit. Like, at Chapter 4, Cloud literally jumps from a bike to Roche and then goes back. But at Chapter 6 he cant jump a gap between two platforms?
Yeah, it's definitely an example of story-gameplay dissonance/segregation.

30. Selective Paralysis
Your characters must always keep both feet on the ground and will be unable to climb over low rock ledges, railings, chairs, cats, slightly differently-colored ground, or any other trivial objects which may happen to be in their way. Note that this condition will not prevent your characters from jumping from railroad car to railroad car later in the game.

That was actually one thing I thought they did a decent job of, funnily enough. Specifically in Chapter 8 where
Cloud confidently says he's a First Class and Reno laughs and tell him to at least make up some believable bullshit. There's no doubt Cloud's an impressive fighter, but I think at this point he's not really at First Class level and the people who know what a First Class is capable of know that right away. Hence why the Turks and Rufus can put up a fight.

Something that has bugged me throughout is that people say, "Oh, your eyes! You must be in SOLDIER." And never "Oh, your uniform! That's a SOLDIER uniform, isn't it? I used to be very active in the Angeal Hewley fanclub when I was in high school..." etc...
TBH this is something that's bothered me since the original. Why does a commander at Junon see a SOLDIER 1st class and tell him he needs to get into his grunt uniform?

But Cloud's outfit is a bastardization of the SOLDIER uniform. Something that looks between an inspired home-made copy or horribly taken care of with each missing part subsequently replaced with outside additions. The only official SOLDIER garb Cloud wears is the belt.

It'd be like seeing a police officer wearing a uniform missing it's sleeves, a homemade gun-holster belt, mismatched pants, and the only official regalia being the hat and badge.

Like, it's.. Sorta an approximation but highly questionable :monster:

I do like how gross his outfit looks in the remake. The leather is kinda ragged, worn and browning, and his DIY shoulder pad is rusty and the blue paint is kinda chipping. I guess he does look pretty suspect. Its still strange nobody really comments on it though, like not even the president bothers to point out the SOLDIER belt.

He's a SOLDIER first class and everybody knows they get to customise their uniforms

But seriously - Mako, obviously a citizen of Midgar with your eagle eye for detail would spot right away that Cloud's 1st class uniform was off in some ways. But until you mentioned it to me, I was not aware that Cloud's uniform wasn't a bona fide 1st uniform, and I am sure many of the citzens of Midgar are like me. When do we see an actual 1st class uniform to compare his to?

In Crisis Core, the uniform Zack dresses him in is definitely 100% 1st class SOLDIER. But maybe Crisis Core is no longer canon.

Is it a DIY shoulder pad? How do you know? When did he have time to make it? He staggered from the place where Zack died, was found by Tifa at the train station, and went on the bombing mission the same night.

Even crisis core shows the outfit go from the proper look to Cloud's modified version in the post credits scene.

Can't really say it's not canon with the ending but I digress... :monster:

Considering the fashion sense of most Midgar grounders, Cloud's unusual clothing style would hardly be worth mentioning. As you said, a SOLDIER 1C could wear anything, and Cloud's outfit is clearly a half-assed recreation or worn out, patchworked version. It's the eyes that are the common trait of a SOLDIER, since you can't fake that.

I always figured this was because SOLDIER uniforms are basically field uniforms, and for a parade you have to be in your "dress" uniform, which in this case is the the standard Shinra uniform.

For example:

Ok, I see that. So what does this mean?
a) the alternate timeline stuff let's not get into that again
b) somebody - Cloud? - took off his real SOLDIER uniform, and then they or he dressed him again in a substandard copy? Why would they do that?

Here's my headcanon.
Tifa, who is 'sick of' everything Shinra (how I wish they'd kept "I hate them all" instead) stripped Cloud of his Shinra uniform after dragging him home from the station, and burnt it. When he came to his senses he spent a day going around the local market cobbling together a homemade facsimile, because he's a SOLDIER, dammit, and he should dress like one. The only fly in my headcanon ointment is that Chapter 3 makes it obvious he's never taken a walk around Sector 7.
I don't know if I really want to trigger another deep dive discussion. Has the issue of Cloud's uniform change already been discussed?

I mean Cloud was on his own for a month or two between Zack’s death and Tifa finding him. So plenty of things could have happened to his initial standard First Class uniform that caused him to end up wearing his customized/modified version.

Doesn't necessarily apply for the Remake, does it? It would be simpler if Cloud managed to get to the train station right after Zack's death and then Tifa found him (still in a bad shape due mako and whatnot). How else would he have survived... OG implied that Cloud got up to "normal" when Tifa touched him, no? So after that, prior to the bombing mission, the modifications could've been done to his uniform. Though I feel like it won't ever get explained.

I feel like Cloud went out of his way to modify his uniform to look handcrafted to make it clear at a glance that he a SOLDIER but no longer affliated with Shinra, then, purely and solely for Gackt's sake, it became canon that all SOLDIER First Classes customise their uniforms, rendering the gesture meaningless.

It's not like Sephiroth was wearing reg uniform either :monster:

Specifically Sephiroth being a special case is not something that needs be wondered at. It still leaves what Zack wore a uniform and what Cloud turned it into no longer a uniform.
