Chapter 3 -

During the dream sequence, did you fiddle with any of the levers? The detonator? The boulder? Did you find the Old Keys?

I did everything except find one old key :monster: I was tired of all the wandering around at the end so I just left it. Laguna's antics with Kiros and Ward's face palmy/mock banter type attitudes playing off that is fun though, as is having an OP Galbadian Soldier team. My Laguna and Kiros had 2000~ HP but Ward didn't have the Curagas but it was ok, alternating between Mad Rush or Massive Anchor spam depending on the fight was fun, or you know just hitting auto attack/default attack command spam cackling at the poor doomed no chance solo Esthar soldiers. I also like the rainbow/crystal back ground effects in here.

Well the Esthar soldiers did get their revenge with a Soul Crush right at the end though.

How is your card collection coming along? Have you come across any card rules you don't like in the card game?

During Chapter 3 I added Sacred and Minotaur to my deck (MiniMog (lost), Quistis, Ifrit, Seifer, Diablos, Zell, Siren, Sacred, Angelo, Minotaur) Not much difference otherwise.

What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?

It's quiet, but it's like a oppressive quietness/suppressed atmosphere. There's a lack of friendliness, restricted access, etc. It's kind of quite sinister really with all of those creepy security service/gym leader trainer type guys everywhere, and everything. Basically I agree with what Tres said here.
I thought maybe I was projecting while here knowing of future events, but then I didn't really like the place much first time through the game either :monster:

What do you think of Irvine?

He's tall! I am always surprised by this when I replay FFVIII and see how tall some peeps, Seifer, Irvine, etc appear to be. I like it. People give Snow a hard time for being bigger than Serah, but you kind of see that here with Irvine and Selphie, and VIII was way before too so. I think it's really cute (Snow/Serah and Irvine/Selphie) People are just heightists or something :P

I quite like Irvine on the whole yeah, his play boy/pimp style was kind of off putting at first, but you see later he genuinely cares for people, especially Selphie and nowadays his antics kind of amuse me more than anything these days especially since Selphie, Quistis and Rinoa are more than capable of handling him in the scenes where he tries to pull anything anyway.

What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?

Favourite is not in Chapter 3 :smashedmonster:

Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?

Basically what Clara said here. Only at first I started off all full of optimism, and hope, and confidence and all oh yeah I can do it this time! Much time later it's like yeah  Funny thing is I never ask the guard for map, location detector or a clue in case that lowers SeeD rank, but then go down a SeeD rank from all the wandering around anyway. Oh well, at least Diablos learnt Encounter None while I was in there >__> Everyone went up a good few levels too (Squall/Rinoa/Selphie) <_<

I think I always/usually do this in FFVIII playthroughs.

Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?

Yes. It really is so cute. One of favourite summons, in FFIX, etc as well. I remember people being all excited thinking Vanille was going to have Carbuncle as her summon before too. I need to like actually try and do something with Carbuncle in FFVIII sometime though like run some sort of magic bouncing strategy or a Counter build or something.

Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?

Nope. Sewers were a breeze after the tomb and I quite enjoyed it really since Quistis had some new limit breaks to play around with, and then there was Zell being the man with Duel again.

What do you think of the story so far?

Still quite enjoying it on the whole so far. Well I liked the Irvine stuff, most of the Laguna stuff, etc. Just kind of echoing what people have been saying here about Edea, the sorceress speech, Deling's fate, potent/atmospheric stuff yeah. It was nice to see her again, and her intro FMV, love that hair.

By the end of disc one I'd actually modded most of the non character cards I had, had some weapons upgraded, as well as the magics from using the other GF magic refine stuff/etc so my junctions were not too shabby either. Seifer went down in like two or three Perfect Renzokukens to the face (after I spent a while stocking his spells while waiting for Squall's HP to get low since it had been recovered), and Edea didn't last that much longer later, the odd thing was that for the Edea fight she never casted a single spell on Squall so he was wailing on her the whole time with Renzokukens in impunity, while Rinoa and Irvine who had started with full HP took all the pain but fight was over before their HP was lowered enough for them to really start spamming their limit breaks anyway.

Minotaur/Sacred were kind of interesting though since I'd ran out of Phoenix Downs from how long I was in the tomb so I had to draw Lifes so I coud raise characters back on low HPs for Limit Break spam.

Officially all caught up. :monster:

Did you junction any Fire spells to your attack in the MD level, like Squall talked about?

I junctioned 100 Firagas to Squall, just for the hell of it. The Oilboyles went down with one hit each.
Did you get the GF Leviathan?

Hell yeah.
Did you meet the Master Fisherman and perform his errand? Listen to his story?

Yes and yes. I love hearing that story about FH's origin.

Since we were recently discussing the world's identity and the limited explanations for the origins of any locales, it also occurs to me that most of them never really needed that much explanation to begin with. Most of these places are obviously based on aesthetics you would find in the real world.

FH needed an explanation due to its placement specific to VIII's world, and it gets one. Other than that, what really needed one? Balamb? Dollet? Galbadia? Esthar? It's enough to know that immigrants from Centra set all of that up, and that the Centra civilization itself was destroyed by natural disaster.

Were you surprised by what we learned about a certain member of Garden's staff?

Both NORG's other-than-ordinary appearance and the identity of Cid's wife surprised (and confused) the hell out of me the first time I played the game.
Were you surprised by what happened after the boss fight in FH?

The first time I played the game, very much so. I knew the others would have to be back, but it didn't occur to me that they would be inside the Iron Clad.

If you read Selphie's diary after her return, it's rather hilarious to learn that her team was randomly hitting the controls inside the machine in an effort to get it to let them back out, which resulted in the boss "attacking" Squall's team. Also rather funny that the Galbadian military accidentally reunited the two teams by picking the Iron Clad up from the ruins of the missile base and transporting it to FH.

Have you already acquired the materials needed to make the Lion Heart?

Been there, done that.

Did you reunite the Cafateria Lady with her son?

Of course! I love a happy reunion.
How did the concert go?

It went. :monster: Rinoa said it wasn't the best rendition of "Eyes On Me" she had ever heard. She also got pissed at Squall.
How's that card collection coming?

Very well. I have all the cards for Levels 1-7 (minus PuPu, of course), and I recently picked up Quezacotl and Leviathan.
Thoughts on the story?

Love the reunion of the team, the philosophy about war that Squall shares with Mayor Dobe ("I think the world needs both people like you and people like us"), Squall opening up and openly expressing his affection for his comrades and the way Irvine stands up for everyone if you run around and talk to people while in control of him ("And you... Judging us... Who are you?").

Some great stuff here.

Now I'm ready to finish the Card Club Quest and start level whoring. :monster:

No but I used to do it.

Did you get the GF Leviathan?

No

Did you meet the Master Fisherman and perform his errand? Listen to his story?

No

Were you surprised by what we learned about a certain member of Garden's staff?

As a kid I was plus this theme scared the crap outta me.

Were you surprised by what happened after the boss fight in FH?

I still don't know how the BGH tank was still functioning and why the other party members were attacking us.

Have you already acquired the materials needed to make the Lion Heart?

Made it near the end of Disc 1.

Did you reunite the Cafateria Lady with her son?

No

How did the concert go?

Good enough, I tend to just pick random instruments.

How's that card collection coming?

Not collecting.

Thoughts on the story?

Norg is one of the most interesting things in the game for me if you go the to Shumi Village you learn that the good Shumi eventually turn into Moomba. I'd love to see what Norg turned into after his egg hatched.

Selphie's diary is actually awesome, I love that whole section of the terminal in general.

I managed to get Strange Vision, Ehrgeiz and Lion Heart last night but I'm gonna keep playing cards for energy crystals.

I've also beaten all the CC members now :monster:

I can't believe I've gone from hating Triple Triad to friggin loving it now

Woohoo! Another convert.

It's even better when you look up the tricks to eliminating undesired game rules. I plan to spread just Open over the whole world. Only three regions left to manipulate, I think.

Wow. I like hitting the "press anything" option at the base and telling the guards that everything was wrecked inside so Selphie could do her thing.

I'm going to start the next chapter a few hours early just because I can. You'll notice that this is primarily a "make up" week for those behind and a chance for those who are caught up to take it easy (if they want to) since this is the week leading into Christmas Eve/Day. I strategically planned it that way from the start (i.e. it was dumb luck how it worked out).

To be completed by start of: 12/25/2013

[Tip: Now is a great time to start doing some sidequests, learning a lot of GF abilities, etc. You can do these things before or after visiting Balamb and/or Trabia Garden. It's up to you.]
  • Who was the third party member you took with you to Zell's room? What happened?
  • Where did you end up finding "the captain"? Were you surprised by this person's identity?
  • Did you get the GF Pandemona?
  • What sidequests have you been doing? Are you enjoying them? What rewards have you reaped?
  • Have you checked out the School Festival Committe webpage/Selphie's diary through Squall's study panel?
  • Discover or see anything else you thought was interesting?
  • Not a lot going on in the story this chapter, but what are your thoughts right now on what took place, what you anticipate is to come, and on the world setting (since you've had time to explore it further)?

Hint for anyone coming onto this chapter for fast AP, there is a part of the kashbald desert accessible once Garden is mobile if you head right up to facing Cactuar Island it's glitched to think you are on it ans therefore you only fight cactuars, 20ap per cactuar and squall with a non-evasive weapon(and Selphie if you manage to get strange vision)= win win for gf abilities without the worry of gaining loads of exp :)

Anyone (in European timezones) fancy Skyping and playing this tonight? I started a game a couple of days ago, just speeding through it as quickly as possible in an effort to catch up with you. I'm back at the Garden after the Dollet mission now with about 1:30 on the clock. I've never tried to play this game quickly before so it's been surprisingly tricky.

i wouldn't mind taking part in this because i never got to finish viii without something interrupting me, but i can't get it to emulate properly on my computer and i don't feel like plugging my ps2 back in just right now :sadpanda:

Mine won't (PAL PS3 and a NTSC-J copy of the game). But emulating it just hits the anti-piracy thing and won't even start.

Hito, i'd either use the emulator pSX or I'd download the game ISO's instead of trying to play it from the disc :)

Zell's love for Bread becomes hotdogs somehow.
