There's a lot of hentai doujinji's for it, does that count?
Point taken.
It's uber-popular. FFXIV will be a success, I predict!

Okay, the PS3 IS fancy equipment, in my case, because I'm behind the times. D: But you know they always get you to spend more and more money on peripherals and nonsense when they can control your means of accessing what it really is you want to pay for! Like the last flight I took, they had satellite radio but charged you $2 for their cheap ass headphones with the special connection that fit into their special headphone jacks. Then they charge you like $3 for a bottle of water, $2 for a bag of chips, next they'll be charging for bathroom use because they know you're in the air and you can't do anything about it anyway. The PS3 could very easily become that airplane!
And Alex Strife, your info says you're 21. Tell your parents to shove it. You're old enough to spend your own money on whatever you want to spend it on, and old enough to have the means to do so. Time to cut the umbilical cord, buddy.
Our guild will be epic, though.
I'd dispute that.
1. Develop online game.
2.????Charge $9001/month for online play.
3. PROFIT!
But the thing is, was FFXI even that successful as an online game? I never heard too much about it, so I'm guessing not so much. D:
This won't bode well for FFXIV
Yeah FFXI is actually a top dog in the P2P (pay to play) MMORPG world, its userbase is still strong. It pales in comparison to WoW but its still mahoosively huge and still at a steady rate of growing members.
The thing about mmorpgs is that even if just 100000 people get the game, thats 10000 people paying 15$+ a month for it ,and people who get addicted tend to play along time , often times starting over on new chars, accounts , ect just to keep playing till the next big update.
I for one have given something like 500$ in subscription fees to a mmorpg called DOFUS, and that one is just 6$ a month , i once interviewed a top dog in the dofus community (the leader of the strongest guild in all the servers) and asked him how much hes paid in subs , lets just say it was well over 1500$ iirc
Thats just a 6$ game , theres guys like this who just keep churning out cash for subs in mmoprgs to make them hits. If you want to be a rich developer MMORPGS are the way to go imo.
That said FFXI has an awesome userbase , in 2008 it had like 32 servers with 3000 max char limit per time on a server (that doesnt mean theres only 3000 players on the server it just means only 3000 can log in , then it fills up and doesnt allow others on).
So thats a minimum of 96000 people who pay the sub fees monthly , assuming the sub fees are 15$ (icba to look) 1440000$ a month.
Thats pretty damn great
Maybe it's just in my country then. We have all kinds of MMORPGs here, but I never heard FFXI being one of the most played.
In fact, I don't even know anyone here who's ever played this game. DDD;
Demmit, I'm starting to hate this n00b country. I'm moving to America or Japan as soon as possible.
Oh and I'm making it my goal to grow up and work for Square-Enix.
i used to play dofus. it's a phail i can't even go to different places and such..i have to subscribe first
thing is, though, that the ones who do stick with it end up pumping a ton of money into it. So yeah, maybe a lot of them only play for one or two months, but that's probably only half of the players. If everyone plays an average of six months at $10 per month, then that's $60 of subscription fees per user in addition to the probably ~$20 they pocketed from the initial game sale (after you deduct what goes to resellers etc.). And even if they resell the game, whoever buys it ends up paying $10 a month as well. So yeah, they don't have to move nearly as many units to make a hefty profit off the game, so it doesn't really matter if sales pale in comparison to FFXIII and FFXV (when it comes out), since that's not where the real profit is made.I rebut your dispute.
The profit only depends on how many gamers they can get to sign up, and for how long gamers continue to play. I've known people to quit XI after two months because it wasn't worth it. The ability online to quit whenever you want makes it easy for people to duck out, and then try and resell it.

I wouldn't really consider an MMO to be a "main FF" though. Something worth "missing out on" has main characters and a story that is, at least to some degree, linear. In all the MMOs I've played (read: 4 of them), they try to make every player the "main character" and all story comes from quests that you choose to do or choose not to do. They can try to change that basic formula, try to make it "more immersive," but ultimately there is no character development, no plot twists, no climax, no denouement, no romance, no drama, and no permanent death or loss of any kind. And no permanent change at all, for that matter. It's just a fun game to play while hanging out with your friends online—not that that's necessarily a bad thing.Nocturne said:ugh Im really sick of the online versions in the main series, and just in general. I have no time to MMORPG, so it just means thats another main FF I have to miss out on.
