Final Fantasy IX

Well what else would have happened to him? He's the one narrating the end sequence, and Kuja said the prototype would only last a little longer than the mass-produced ones.

Loss of Me (or Rose of May depending on which translation you believe).
Rose of May looks more likely to me :monster:

(tl;dr version: ローズ (roozu) is 'rose' (or 'Rhodes' but I doubt that here) and not how you write 'loss', and メイ (mei) isn't how you'd write 'me'. To be Loss of Me, it's be ロス・オブ・ミー (rosu obu mii). Unless there was some kind of intentional differences between the naming, I don't really know much about it.)

I've only ever played FFIX through once, but I wouldn't mind playing through it again. Though it would probably mean buying it again since I don't have the money for right now.

@ mr_ite: Yup yup.

For anyone who wants tl;dr info on why having Quina in your party is a good thing on disc 3...AHEM!

You can head back to the Iifa Tree on disc 3 once you get the Blue narcissus and have Quina learn Level 5 death there. You can learn it from the big tree monster ( I think its called a stroper????).

I've also just remembered you don't need a mountain chocobo to access the Popos Heights which is where the Grand Dragons are. You can get to them from Gizamaluke's Grotto so you can fight the Grand Dragon's from disc one but you're pretty much screwed with low levels and no level 5 death ability, its quicker to get to the blue narcissus to change your party if you have a mountain chocobo though.

By the time I'd spent around 2-3 hours fighting Grand Dragons, with the Level up and Ability up abilities equipped before heading to the Desert palace, I had a level 50 Quina, a level 56 Zidane and all the other characters on level 45 with a large amount of abilites mastered. It's really handy as well when you have to go to the Earth shrine with just Quina and Zidane later on and for levelling up Freya and Steiner who are pretty much redundant during disc 2 :)

On another topic seeing as the ending was mentioned, was anyone else confused about who was narrating the first time they completed the game?

Quina was one of my favourite battle-characters. Then, I've always loved blue-mages *shrug*

I totally forgot about Amarant BTW. Yeah, I really disliked him. He was like the Vincent of the game, but even more dry.

Amarant was badass and you can kiss his scarlet red ass for saying such a thing. :monster:

Yep yep. I think it's intentionally ambiguous, to make you think it's
Zidane
at first.

As for Amarant, I thought he served his purpose well enough as a foil for Zidane. He was damn useful as a party member, though! Chakra ftw.

Yeah when I first completed FFIX I couldn't figure it out until I saw the ending for about the 3rd time
I thought it could've been Zidane at first too and then I started to realise it was more than likely to be Vivi, then part of me thought it was Garnet because of her song playing during the narration and then on a stupid note, at one point I thought it might have been Kuja...why I thought that at the time, I really don't know

I didn't like Amarant an awful lot either but he did come in handy with that No Mercy and Curse abilities of his.

Yeah, I was pretty indifferent towards Amarant as a character - I didn't really dislike him, he was just kind of dull - but he was pretty much always in my party. :monster:

Other than him, though, I think FFIX's cast is one of the strongest in the series. Everyone in the main party, except for Amarant, is really likeable, IMO; Steiner was the only one I didn't like too much at first, but by the end of the game he really grew on me. I also really liked how the ATEs let you see more of the more minor characters, like everyone in Tantalus.

You're Not Alone is a great piece of music, it's one of my favourites of the whole soundtrack.

I actually did like Steiner a lot, he had some great moments in the story and I loved how his relationship with Beatrix developed from rival to romance.

What was the purpose of the Hawaiian/Aloha items? I know that they lower your stats and make you weak against every element so were they there to pose a challenge if you want to try and fight the final boss or Ozma with really low stats or just as a gimmick?

I loved Steiner from the beginning. I mean, they were basically burlesquing the Warrior of Light, and classical fantasy heroes in general. And then he just happened to become an awesome character.

Something I've always loved about FFs is that their bromances are really subtle - such as Zidane and Steiner, Cloud and Barret, or Squall and Zell. I really like the "they hate each other, but learn to fight together, then grow to respect and eventually like each other" arc. It never gets old for me.

Also, on Steiner, "Fatigue rears her ugly head" almost single-handedly sold me on the game.

Me too, I like him well enough. He was always on my team though since he does so much freaking damage. And Magic Sword of course.

$10 = £5 (roughly)

Yes, but given the way Europe always gets screwed on this sort of thing I imagine IX is still 10 pounds over there.

Yes, yes it is.

Steiner was hilarious throughout most of the course of the game and he underwent one of best character development arcs in any Final Fantasy games. I really don't see what's not to like.

This did occur to me after logging off. :monster:

RE: Steiner - one of his lines on disc 4 has become my battle cry.

Steiner is win. He may not be one of my favourites, but he's still awesome nonetheless.

OH MY LOL. Honestly, it's one-liners like these that really make me realize how the dialogue for FF games hasn't quite been at the same level of quality since the advent of voice acting.

Absolutely. In FFIX, you have the following line on an item: "We seek the meaning of life because we are mortal". (It's on one of the bells you get at either Gizamaluke's Grotto or Burmecia, IIRC.)

In FFX, you have a macarena reference.
