*swears she will stop playing if Versus blows*
Nomura says that he recently did a walkthrough of the full world map. He also did a check on the game's dungeons and the side paths in the game's towns. He was impressed with how expansive everything is.
When Square Enix announced the development of its "Luminous" next generation engine, some very cruel people joked that maybe Versus would be updated to use it. Actually, the game does use the lightning technology from Luminous, Nomura reveals. However, the game also uses a game specific engine that's specialized for action.
With Versus, Nomura promises a Final Fantasy like you've never seen before.

And the rationale of holding off showing Versus at TGS in deference to Famitsu would be...?
I'm still not comfortable with Noctis as the main character. There's something about him that I don't like.

But Nomura said nothing about 2013, so it could be 2014, too, although I admit that's a bit too far away; even for Square's current standards.
I'm just surprised at all the fanart that has come over deviantArt - at the very least deviantArt - regarding Noctis (and Stella, but it seems more dedicated towards Noctis.)
Anyone speak French?

Hair not spikey enough? Face not effeminate enough? Outfit doesn't have enough belts and zippers? We've yet to see his swords clearly and thus cannot judge how ridiculously implausible they are?
