Interestingly, the CC Ultimania and CCCG say Sephiroth is "roughly 25" and "mid-20s" (respectively) at his first appearance in Crisis Core, which is at Fort Tamblin in late 2000. Let's assume "roughly 25" means 23-27. That would mean Sephiroth is somewhere between 29 and 34 as of the beginning of FFVII, which would put him at 11 to 16 in 1989 in First SOLDIER.

Considering they were running around with literal teenagers, I'm beginning to understand why Barret and Cid were always so pissy.

They clearly say that the first SOLDIERs appeared 12 years after the project started, 30 years ago.
But they didn't appear spontaneously. Who knows how long it took for individual successes to be determined to arrive, one by one, at the batch who would become the first SOLDIERs -- so the game could easily visit any of that time period.

Yes but clearly we'll be playing those first SOLDIERs 12 years after. Here's to hope for some cutscenes before, so we have more context and background!

if these video game 30 year olds were more realistic they would be constantly asking why my knees always hurt

i'm still not sure about actually playing the game (unless i can play it on my own), and so far i'm not sure if those scenes are going to be interspersed in the game or if it's just an opening cinematic meant to give an impression of the game (stylised direction of the scientist scenes and lack of dialogue makes me question it). i still might just end up watching the story scenes on youtube.

Now that I think about it, in the last clip where Hojo is holding the gun, it's from Gast's POV, so he was probably holding the camera instead of it being wall mounted like in the OG. Considering Gast is missing from all the other shots with Hojo, Hollander, Lucretia, etc., maybe we're seeing footage that he filmed himself (hence the cassette track line filter). We might get to see this exact footage again in a later Remake part when we visit Icicle Inn.

Heheh that was me who pointed it out Shademp.

Story-wise, it would mean that we do get way more than the premise though; isn't Gast associated with the Cetra project rather than SOLDIER project? Also this happens some 8 years-ish after the start of the SOLDIER project, in an unrelated place... The first SOLDIERs are still 4 years away from being a "success". Isn't the chance of them showing him shooting Vincent more fitting, timeline-wise?

Not that they couldn't change things, but Hojo has never had troopers with him in depictions of the altercation with Vincent, it was always just the two of them.

Yes it does, also there's a weird white thing on the picture, as if it was frozen so it might indeed be Icicle Inn, indeed. It's just so weird to me to put that at this point. In what way are the SOLDIER and Cetra programs connected, it makes me wonder.

Unclear. The Gillian in Crisis Core has black hair while this scientist in the footage has dark brown hair. If she is intended to be Gillian they may have changed her hair color to stand more in contrast to Hollander's black hair.

Her art has brown hair. Yeah they could have easily changed it this time around. IIrc there was a soldier in CC who talked about Gillian's younger appearance.

Yeah, that's definitely Gillian.

I totally forgot about her. :monster:

But seeing her artwork and comparing the character in the trailer, they got the same hair and everything. That's them. Project S and G, together in the same trailer?

Fucking CHAOS madness.

EDIT: LOL at 0:11 seconds into the trailer, you see Hollander face palming in defeat with the text "Countless casualties and more than a decade later, their goal remained unrealized." I didn't notice that before! I guess this was the part where he realized Genesis was a failure? :monster:

"Clearly"? How so? The premise of the game as advertised in the first trailer is "Can you become history's first SOLDIER?" and the first tweet about it from the official FFVII remake twitter says we will be playing "as a SOLDIER candidate."

That all suggests the present day for us (as the game's service begins anyway) will be set sometime prior to the 18-years-before-the-main-FFVII mark.
