Isn't it more of a matter of the text boxes being a fixed size and there being no space to add moar or bigger ones in the translations? iirc Japanese is moar compacter.
I think that stopped being an issue after 7.

It's too bad there's no Russian bootleg of FFVIII, but if we had a Game text editor and ran it through Google Translate a few times, it might have the same effect.
I only just finished getting Ifrit. The SeeD exam is up next. How convenient that there is an invasion happening in Dollet just in time for the annual exam.
What do they do when there's a year of peace? =P
I find it very interesting that in hindsight, both FFVIII and Naruto were both released/started in the same year and that both of them essentially use the same mercenary system. Only Naruto had about 15 years worth of development of the system and deconstructed/reconstructed it to hell and back. FFVIII never got that. Now it's "what kind of fucked up society do they live in that it's okay to train kids to become mercenaries and let them fight in active war zones from the age of 15?! Who is in charge of this crazy world? Who would send their kids to that school willingly?! WHY"
This is one of the few things that I wish had been addressed. In FFVII we at least see an NPC or two who are retired SOLDIERs. In FFVIII we don't see any retired/graduated SeeDs. So where are they? Although I find it very interesting that while Irvine is at a Garden, he says he's not a SeeD...Also, I wonder why even SeeD have to leave Garden at age 19. If it's an elite mercenary unit, why only use teenagers? Bringing me back to the part where this is fucked up =P
The most we ever get about that, I think, is this line from the FFVIII Ultimania: "Many graduates are enlisted in armies around the world."This is one of the few things that I wish had been addressed. I imagine that this is the reason for 19 being the deadline for graduation. Edea probably didn't know precisely how old Squall was when she met him after SeeD defeated Ultimecia, but she could see that he was a teenager.Obsidian said:That said, the fact that SeeD isn't actually for mercenary work, but for being watchers of Sorceresses might have something to do with that.
I always figured that it was just convenient timing -- there would have been a different (controlled) exam held normally, but because that shit was going down in Dollet, it just worked out as an even better opportunity.Did the SeeD exam. They mentioned getting the assignment 18 hours prior.
How the hell do you organize an annual exam when you receive assignments on short notice? Or do SeeD get enough assignments for this to be feasible?
How much conflict is there in this world?
Who invades whom? Is it mostly Galbadia being dicks?
Who knows.

The tedium of making sure that the best possible card game rules are kept is a major reason why I'll never play FFVIII again. My completionist streak doesn't allow me to ignore Triple Triad in a playthrough, but I don't want to ever suffer through that again with all the backtracking and countless resets. The card quests are a deep labyrinth even without all the shitty rules that can come into play. It's possible to stop the annoying rules from spreading at all if you do exactly the right steps (it's detailed in a guide on GameFAQs), but it's fucking tedious.
Maths ftw.
