So what was with Luzzu being "torn in half" but then it's clearly him in one piece lying on a bed at the inn in Djose? :wacky:

How does no one realise they stand on Sin under Lake Macalania, his fins are poking right out of the water, dammit.

Tell Gatta he should obey his orders -> he lives
Encourage him to be stupid and join the battle -> he dies

Random impressions:

Just got past the underwater kiss scene. <3

So beautiful. Although it's too bad those scenes are only upscaled (and cropped). No one ever thought there might be a need to make FMVs future proof I guess. If they still insist on using FMVs in future games, I hope they render them at like, 8K or something and archive them.

Anyway. Unlike previous playthroughs, I decided to branch out a little bit on the sphere board, teach characters skills and magic aside from their usual path to make the story playthrough a bit more interesting. :monster:

Btw, Via Purifico is the stupidest way of executing someone, yes?
Throw a bunch of people into a hallway full of generic monsters...and let them keep their weapons, magic, powerful Aeons and everything.
*slow clap*
Brilliant. I love it.

Yuna in that wedding dress, just unffff <3

Bahamut is beautifully overpowered as always.

Also, those pre-rendered backgrounds...are they even CG? Taking a closer look, they seem painted in parts.

What could possibly go wrong? Surely they'll never get past all of that and the other people with aeons and attempt some sort of jailbreak. They'll die of starvation long before they make any effort to get out.

Also, it's so apparent that they really hadn't much experience with cinematics in this game.
There's this one scene in the Al Bhed Home before you enter the Summoner's Sanctum where the characters walk down the stairs in slow motion and it looks incredibly silly because of the robotic generic walking animations that are used and they just kind of glide down the steps.
Especially Wakka who is actually running and it just looks weird in slo-mo and he does this on the spot 90° turn when he gets to the stairs. Just weird looking.

^moments like these were what truly drew me away from the game. Completely broke my immersion and any chance of caring what the characters were going through.

Really? I guess I can understand it being a little distracting, maybe, but to ruin the experience so much that you end up forgetting about the characters and what they're going through at the time seems like a really extreme reaction to something that isn't that big of a deal, in my opinion.

The game doesn't ever try to pretend that it is a good way to kill someone, though. Tidus himself points out how stupid it is. :monster:

I always took it as one of those weird 'innocence by trial' thing, where the ones who don't manage to survive are 'guilty', and the ones who make it through were innocent in the first place.

I always assumed that the Via Purifico was a trial by combat thing.
It's for people who protest their innocence, you're throw in and if you make it out you have proven you are innocence and have the blessing of Yevon and if you die you are a sinner & guilty. (Like the trial by combat thing in Game of Thrones.)

But by that point in the story we know Yevon is corrupt, therefore guards are at the exit and shoot anyone that makes it out. The common folk think there is a fair trial and the corrupt leaders kill who they like.

Or is it just a crap way to kill someone and am I giving the writers to much credit?

[Edit] Kiss Land beat me to it. :P

Except you're still very guilty when you leave. :monster:

we are on a forum based on a game where the characters are all strange looking lego people, after all :monster:
My reaction might be extreme but it's not entirely unreasonable. With lego people, you don't expect perfectly fluid, realistic motions. The contrast between the realistic character models in FFX and their sometimes wonky, awkward movement is what really makes it stand out and annoy me. Might be that the awkwardness is more apparent in the PAL speed of 50Hz, I dunno.

I should probably take into account that most of the game felt "off" to me, including the dialogue and the voice acting. If I had nostalgia for the game it'd be a different matter. The first time I played FFX was about 18 months ago. I really tried to like the game and I did start enjoying the battles 11 hours in. But the story could not be salvaged for me and I just didn't care when the ending cutscenes played.

Question for you guys. I've heard that putting Kimahri down Rikku's path makes him kind of awesome. Has anyone here actually done it? I was thinking about it, but then I just realized from a story perspective, I didn't like Kimahri being a thief. But that's not really going to help me with gameplay though, is it? :monster:

The last time I played through X with Force, that's the path he took Kimahri went down. It was definitely helpful at times, especially with the major HP boost that Rikku's path has right away due to her joining the party late in the game. Still didn't get incredibly far into Rikku's path, just due to not using Kimahri as often as the other characters. But it was cool to have another character who could steal and such.

That's the path I always send Kimahri down - having an extra Steal/Use character is immensely helpful.

^That's actually what I did in my first playthrough. It was simply because I changed my mind, not because of planning, but it turned out okay.
