This is not a bad game. I'm having the time of my life.

It definitely isn't 10/10 across the board by any margin, but it's a great game thus far. Having seen trailers etc leading up to it, all of my expectations have been met and there's even more than I first thought.

I can see why some people might not like aspects of it. I can also see why some people are saying it doesn't live up to the ten year hype. Why should it though? It's not been in active development for that long.

20+ hours in and barely scratched the surface of my experience. Having a ball ^_^

I also want to add there have been some really big character moments and fantastic set pieces in a handful of sidequests.
Seen a lot of people skipping these to complete the main story and know they must have been missed.

There definitely is a feeling of lacking direction in the main story but there's a lot of story and character moments happening outside of that main quest. If people are skipping those (they are) then they're missing a pretty substantial chunk of the game, its cast and the overarching story.

ETA: You know what tho...I halfway take back my last post. As soon as Snow appeared and opened his mouth, I remembered why I wanted to wring my own neck while playing this game.

I remember liking how nights in Episode Duscae actually looked dark unlike most other games. The effect seems to be gone. Probably lighting downgrade to increase performance...

I actually thought it looked realistically dark. So far I've only been out in the 'wilds' once at night, and it was quite dark. There was a full moon though and the land looked illuminated from that. Honestly looks quite accurate when I'm outside my house at night with a full moon; it lights up a lot but is still very dark.

Why does the Lucis Kingdom use a different currency for everything outside Insomnia?
Why do the protagonists not seem to be aware of that? Why did Regis allow these ignorant kids to go on a trip with zero usable money?
I know it's mostly for gameplay purposes of not starting you out completely loaded but it makes not a lot of sense from a story perspective imo.

I thought it was pretty hilarious/weird too that you start out with zero money... until Ignis says that they spent it all on getting the car repaired. So there's the story explanation for that. :monster:
The different currency is a strange one. Curious to see if there's any story explanation for that.

Also, am I the only one who thinks the graphics are actually amazing and gorgeous? :closedmonster: I certainly ain't playing with 4K and I thought they looked great....

I got it at 7:30PM on the 29th. Watched Kingsglaive and installed it and played it by midnight until 5am. Played it again yesterday, and probably will again later today. I've sunk about 10 hours total in & beat the Bandersnatch, but still haven't gone to Golden Quay yet to even get started in the main storyline. Thinking that today's gonna be the day.

Listening to FF music while driving around is so satisfying, I can't even. This game makes me so damn happy.

I know Random Nobody's feelings on this already (I was writing this as he made his comment a few posts above ironically enough), but can some more of you who are actually playing the game weigh in on whether you feel invested in this cast and their struggles? Because having watched a playthrough of the game, I just find myself not caring about any of these people at all.

Lord knows FFXIII had its problems, as well as a few named NPCs it could have dropped without them being missed, but it feels that way with nearly everyone who appears in this game.

The thing is, FFXIII has the basics like character introductions (like idk, Hope's mom) and, gasp, distinct characters. XV er... depends entirely on voice actors to add personality to the games. So far the only backstory for characters I've been able to figure out is
that one's a prince and another has a sister. That's it. I mean Ignis is Balthier that cooks, minus the personality. Prompto is Shaggy or Tidus and has no defining characteristics besides an overly excited voice actor and a very strange body animation actor.

I mean I like to think I get it and they want us to get a feeling for the characters via random conversations and shit, but, it just doesn't work. I wonder if it's just something lost in translation or something.

Also, am I the only one who thinks the graphics are actually amazing and gorgeous? :closedmonster: I certainly ain't playing with 4K and I thought they looked great....

Have you played Uncharted 4 yet? Compare it with that one :monster:. 4K won't make a difference on televisions, I'm sure.

I'm having a ball, just going to throw my hat in that ring.

My complaint is the sidequests (the sheer large number of boring ones), but that's my only complaint so far. I think if a person rushes this game they'll miss half the exposition and character interactions, because a lot of that happens between the characters as you're moving from place to place.

For example, I stayed at a random motel and it triggered that scene with Prompto and Noct from one of the trailers where they have a discussion on a motel roof about Prompto and his insecurities. The scene is entirely optional. If I wasn't already endeared to Prompto I would have been after that. Personality wise he's basically OG VII Cloud except he gets to actually address and be open about his insecurities with a veneer of chipperness.

Also,
I jumped twice and just screamed out loud because this dungeon is giving me jumpscares XD. RAMUH FFS

Imps in tight spaces. Imps near that treasure at the cliff/hole bit. You have been warned.

I have played Xenoblade. The amount of sidequests in this one doesn't faze me compared to that. :P

Also, looks like my SE Store copy has arrived after all.
Well, time to return it and keep the one from Amazon, derp. :wacky:

I had one at a camp where Gladio wakes Noctis at dawn for a run. This naturally turns into a race, which I had fun cheating it by chucking my sword and warping :monster:

Those are "tour" quests triggered from camping at specific camps - they're neat. But they're different from the thing I was talking about - it was a full interactive scene where they get deep about Prompto (as in, the kind with good lip synching XD). I'm quite surprised it was optional.

If anyone wants to try triggering it I think it was at the Taelpar Rest Area - the one quite far south.

Day 3 (ish) (real life lol) down.

I didn't look at the in-game clock but I know it's over 30 hours at this point. I've just started chapter 6 :monster:

I'm having an amazing time. The story really picks up in Chapter 4, 5 and so far 6. I am gutted beyond belief that I have to work tomorrow, but at least I have after work/ the whole weekend. Next week is going to be absolutely horrendous if I don't finish the main story this weekend.

I feel like I can't form a solid opinion until I've played the entire game, but the only thing I can honestly say right now is that I'm enjoying myself a lot. There are niggly things here and there I dislike, and almost all of those are related to side quests. For example, people complain all the time that Dragon Age: Inquisition is filled with MMO-style fetch quests, but they never bothered me because there's a rhythm attached to it (i.e. you pick up a bunch in one part of the map and probably fulfill the requirements for most of them on your way to an objective elsewhere).

There's no real way to do this in XV, so I find myself planning out my in-game day with about two to three quests that aren't going to amount to anything meaningful other than a small chunk of EXP, then think "OK on the third day I'll continue the main story" but end up spending 5 in-game days doing different quests because their locations are all over the place and progress time too fast re: travel. The map also lacks detail when zoomed in which is a really inexplicable omission given that the minimap shows you a level of detail not seen anywhere else. Certain things should be marked on the map that aren't and vice versa. The quest log isn't organised in a way I like (i.e., it's not organised at all) and the quests that give you an area to search for something in on the minimap are the absolute worst. For some reason it's near impossible to find things within even a small area.

It's frustrating because they've proven they can do meaningful (but optional) side content all over the game already. For example there's a guy in lestallum called Vyv (who will heretofore be referred to as Hurley from Lost) who sends you on missions to take photographs. It's good because it has a thread - the characters discuss him and his motives, questioning them, therefore making you give a shit about a potential conclusion to said quest chain. Hell, there's even a "professor" side-quest-chain for a woman Gladio knows (a world-renowned researcher, apparently) that is literally collecting frogs, but it's leading somewhere, it's building up to something. The payoff might be shit but the mini-plot-thread is there.

Meanwhile "my car has broken down #224 plz give repair kit" and "oops I fell can I plz have potion #472" add fuck all other than general annoyance. It's the recycled NPC lines that really kill these.

^Other than that, I've had an entirely positive experience so far :monster:

EDIT: I just want to add that one of the most impressive things is the animations for items used in battle. The Phoenix Down animation is my favourite thing. The character pulls out a feather and it's just a really nice touch. All of the item animations have been cool so far, but I've only really used potions, antidotes and one or two phoenix downs.

I have the habit of playing games in small chunks so they last longer. I need to remind myself this is an open world RPG so I'll be playing this in a hundred years still if I keep doing that. Maybe I'll actually get somewhere tomorrow. :monster:

The vast majority of my time has been spent doing side quests, so if you're going to fuck about like I do, I'd definitely recommend the blasting full-on marathon playstyle yeah :monster:

I'm home from being out all day and I'm so excited to get back to the game :awesome:

Also, did anyone else find the
Crestholm channels? I drove back to the blockade closest to Insomnia and stumbled upon those sewers. Snuck in there, found some nice items, hit a button... 2 LEVEL 44 MONSTERS APPEARED

I got the fuck out of there :wacky: I absolutely love it though. Like it was very well tucked away and totally out of the way on the main map even. You technically 'backtrack' to find it. So fun. <3

Funny how some of you like to talk smack about FFXIII and FFXV whenever I'm not around.

Tres asked me to weigh in and I'm doing precisely that!

Lip synchs? I saw no issues with this up close or far away. Sure there's conversation gestures during drives when you hear no dialogue, but all the IMPORTANT dialogue is voiced and synched decent. They'd have memory issues if idle banter filled the game's space.

Combat is fun, side quests are optional AS THEY SHOULD BE, and stuff can be re-collected if you're low on Gil. I don't see the problem. Since when should side quests be mandatory???

I dunno what games you guys play, but my experience with FFXV is a lot more entertaining than XIII, XIII-2, and LR. The versatility, the scenery, the way you manage your time without feeling pressure to go places. It's a lot less rigid.

Certainly the plot was different in all the games thus far, but FFXV is aged WINE compared to FFXIII's stale grapes, and stale grapes taste decent if you eat them right.
